entropy coding is a lossless data compression technique that is widely applied in video codecs to encode syntax elements into bitstreams. Efficient entropy coding requires accurate prediction of the probability distribution of the encoded symbols. In AV1, multi-symbol arithmetic coding is adopted. The symbol probability is derived with handcrafted context models and lookup tables that store the predicted probabilities corresponding to different entropy contexts. The lookup table based scheme has some fundamental deficiencies. The entropy context features have to be discrete so that they can be used to index the lookup tables. To reduce the size of the lookup table, the number of contexts cannot be very large. Moreover, the probability distributions stored in the lookup tables are maintained separately without taking their correlations into consideration. In this paper, we propose a machine learning based scheme that achieves more accurate symbol probability prediction for entropy coding. The proposed approach is implemented in AV1 for the entropy coding of intra prediction modes. Experimental results demonstrate that it can improve the efficiency of entropy coding significantly.

In this paper two new hardware-based entropy coding architectures for asymmetric numeral systems are introduced, as entropy encoding is one of the major phases in a compression algorithm. The proposed architectures are based on tabled asymmetric numeral systems (tANS). The tabled asymmetric numeral systems combines the speed advantage of table based approaches (e.g. Huffman encoding) with the higher compression rate advantage of arithmetic encoding. Both proposed architectures have been synthesized to a state-of-the-art FPGA, and the synthesis results show high encoding throughput. The architectures are capable of encoding one symbol per clock cycle. The performance of the architectures depends on the number of symbols in the alphabet and may vary from 146 up to 290 Mega symbols per second (Msps).

Advancement in technology has complemented the increased complexity of state-of-the-art video coding standards by providing high-performance multimedia platforms. This has resulted in nonnegligible computational reliability issues, especially with respect to soft errors. This paper motivates the dire need towards computationally Reliable Video coding (ReVC) on modern hardware platforms. We highlight the issues with the help of a fault injection analysis during the CAVLC processing. We present a case study on error-tolerant CAVLC, where error tolerance is achieved at various levels of abstraction, ranging from algorithm to hardware. Application-specific knowledge of CAVLC is used to detect potential errors at the algorithm level, while hardware means are provided to protect the tables for CAVLC. Experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the video quality under high fault rates. Furthermore, we demonstrate that when considering the application-specific knowledge, our proposed solution incurs minimal area and performance overhead compared to redundancy-based reliability methods.

In this paper a video coding scheme is presented which is a hybrid coding scheme tailored to suit the wavelet transform. Using conventional block based motion compensation introduces blocking effects in the prediction error signal which are expensive to code when using a wavelet transform. Therefore a windowed motion compensation using overlapping blocks is used to smooth out transitions between blocks. A method for coding the quantized wavelet coefficients is presented. The positions of non-zero coefficients are coded using conditional entropy coding. The method exploits the correlation between coefficients inside a subband as well as between coefficients in different subbands. Simulation results are given for different prediction methods and different methods to code the quantized wavelet coefficients when coding an R.601 signal to 4 Mbit/s.

Context based entropy coding has the potential to provide higher gain over memoryless entropy coding. However serious difficulties arise regarding the practical implementation in real-time applications due to its very high memory requirements. This paper presents an efficient method for designing context adaptive entropy coding while fulfilling low memory requirements. From a study of coding gain scalability as a function of context size, new context design and validation procedures are derived. Further, supervised clustering and mapping optimization are introduced to model efficiently the context. The resulting context modelling associated with an arithmetic coder was successfully implemented in a transform-based audio coder for real-time processing. It shows significant improvement over the entropy coding used in MPEG-4 AAC.

We introduce conditional Huffman encoding of DCT run-length events to improve the coding efficiency of low- and medium-bit rate video compression algorithms. We condition the Huffman code for each run-length event on a classification of the current block. We classify blocks according to coding mode and signal type, which are known to the decoder, and according to energy, which the decoder must receive as side information. Our classification schemes improve coding efficiency with little or no increased running time and some increased memory use.

entropy coding based on k-th order Exp-Golomb (EGk) codes is a key part in the new AVS video coding standard issued by Audio Video coding Standard Workgroup of China. An efficient design based on code-value compact memory structure (CVCMS) is proposed to reduce the computational complexity and memory requirement. Only 789 byte memory is required for variable length coding (VLC) tables in CVCMS, which is just about 5.92% compared with that of the reference software. Furthermore, code-value is stored in memory, which reduced the computational complexity of EGk coding. The simulation results show that the proposed entropy coding for AVS video coding standard reduces the computational cost by 26.48%

The aim of this study is to investigate neuronal ensemble coding mechanism via entropy under fear conditioning. entropy is a measurement of uncertainty and the amount of information in a sequence, which can quanta information as well as describe the ensemble coding characteristic. The original data were recorded at anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of rats by implicated 16 channels array under two conditions: pre-training and testing. Then through a high pass filtering (300Hz-7.5KHz) and spike detection, spike trains were obtained via spike sorting. The entropy values were performed in a selected window (500ms) with a moving step (size of 1/4window). The results showed that the entropy values were lower in pre-training with no ensemble activity;in testing condition, the entropy values were higher, where presented obvious ensemble activity. Conclusion: in pre-training, no ensemble activity was presented, which indicated that memory was not formed;in testing condition, obvious ensemble activity was manifested, which showed that the fear memory has been built up. The effect on coding firing information of neuronal ensemble by dynamic entropy coding was proved.

H.264 video coding standard supports a broad range of application, and how to guarantee its security has already become an urgent problem. In this paper, we propose a, video encryption algorithm for H.264, which combines stream cipher algorithm with entropy coding process. It obtains video content security by encrypting codeword index to scramble the position of the codeword. Experiments show that, the proposed algorithm is, able to provide compromise between security and complexity, has little effect on compression performance. It's believed to be applied in the fields of video conference, digital rights management, multimedia storage, etc.
