Normal maps play an important role in realistic 3D image rendering to express pseudo roughness of the surface with small amount of polygon data. In this paper, a fast and efficient normal map compression algorithm is proposed based on vector quantization and entropy coding. Using the strong correlation among x, y, and z components of normal maps owing to the unity condition, compression ratio has been made much better than conventional approaches. In addition, the encoding time has been made reasonable by considering the distribution of the data and employing inner product in nearest-neighbor search instead of Euclidian distance taking advantage of the unity condition of the training data

This paper proposes a framework for joint source-channel decoding of Markov sequences that are coded by a fixed-rate multiple description quantizer (MDQ), and transmitted via a lossy network. This framework is suited for lossy networks of primitive energy-deprived source encoders. Our technical approach is one of maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) sequence estimation that exploits both the source memory and the correlation between different MDQ descriptions. We solve the MAP estimation problem by computing the longest path in a weighted directed acyclic graph, at a complexity of O(L/sup 2/NK), where N is the number of source symbols in the input sequence, K is the number of MDQ descriptions, and L is the number of codewords of the central quantizer. If the source sequence is Gaussian Markovian, the decoder complexity can be reduced to O(LNK). For MDQ-compressed Markov sequences impaired by both bit errors and erasure errors, the performance of joint source-channel MAP decoder can be 6 dB higher than the conventional hard-decision decoder. Furthermore, the new MDQ decoding technique unifies the treatments of different subsets of the K descriptions available at the decoder, circumventing the thorny issue of requiring up to 2/sup K/ - 1 MDQ side decoders.

We introduce in this paper a new compression process to encode the geometry of 3D mesh sequences (with a fixed connectivity). The proposed method uses a scan-based wavelet transform with an original approach which consists to compensate the geometry displacements of the mesh sequence. The proposed coder is based on temporal lifting scheme and bit allocation using statistical models for the probability densities of the temporal wavelet coefficients. Then, scalar quantization and entropy coding are used to encode the quantized subbands and the geometry displacement vectors. The resulting compression scheme shows that good coding performances are obtained when the compensation of the geometry is done on the whole sequence, which requires large memory. Furthermore, we showed that when low memory scan-based compression is done, the performances of the encoder approach the ones obtained when the whole sequence is known. Also, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides better compression performances than some state of the art coders.

Using soft decision quantization rather than the conventional hard decision quantization, this paper studies a joint rate distortion design of motion prediction, quantization and entropy coding for the H.264 main profile encoding. Specifically, a soft decision quantization algorithm is proposed based on the context adaptive binary arithmetic coding method in H.264. The proposed algorithm is proved to achieve optimal soft decision quantization for a block with given motion prediction and quantization step size in the sense of minimizing the true rate distortion cost. It is then used in jointly designing motion prediction and residual coding for H.264 main profile coding. Experiments have been conducted based on the reference encoder JM82 of H.264. Comparative studies show that the proposed joint design method achieves an average 10% rate reduction while maintaining the same quality over the rate distortion method in the reference software of H.264

In this paper, the radar image compression of voyage data recorder (VDR) is researched. A sheet of radar image is stored in a VDR after an interval of time, so the compression algorithm for radar image may be seen as immobile image compression. The image compression process includes discrete wavelet transform (DWT), quantization and entropy coding. First, the DWT and its fast Mallat algorithm is presented. Then, the character of the image after DWT is analyzed. The set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) coder includes the function of quantization and entropy coding, the SPIHT coder is explained in this paper briefly. At last, several wavelet functions in common use are chosen to compress the radar image, and code for it with two coding algorithms: embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) and SPIHT. The simulation results show the SPIHT is more effective than EZW

MPEG-4 audio lossless coding (ALS) is a standard compression tool for audio signals based on time- domain prediction. In this paper, enhanced encoder algorithms and implementation examples of MPEG-4 ALS are described and performance-complexity tradeoffs are discussed. Compression performance can be enhanced at the cost of computational complexity, using integrated tools, such as hierarchical block switching, multi-channel coding, long-term prediction, and backward adaptive prediction. To reduce the computational complexity of the encoder, simplified algorithms have been developed for the multichannel prediction coding and the long-term prediction tools. As a result, encoder execution time has been reduced to 1/6 of that by the MPEG reference software. It is also found that ALS outperforms other compression tools.

In this paper, we propose a simple subband image compression scheme using wavelet decomposition. The proposed coding scheme employs a multi-level dyadic wavelet decomposition, organizes and orders the resultant wavelet coefficients using a pre-determined quadtree data structure, and finally encode symbols by arithmetic coding with a pre-designed context information. Despite the simplicity of the scheme, the experimental result shows it is competitive with the presently available schemes when compared with various types of test images.

The Internet low bit-rate coder (iLBC) is now widely used for voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) applications. Unlike speech coders such as those based on code excited linear prediction (CELP), the iLBC achieves superior robustness to packet loss by avoiding inter-frame coding dependencies. While robustness to packet loss is essential, a VoIP codec should also possess the flexibility to change its source coding rate in order to counter network congestion and facilitate joint source channel coding for wireless channels. Previously, we presented a new variation of the iLBC encoding procedure which yielded a more efficient, rate-flexible result. In an effort to improve performance at lower source rates, we present various improvements to the original framework. Specifically, we reallocate bits from the adaptive codebook procedure; reduce the length of the start state vector; utilize an adaptive pulse gain quantization scheme; and extend the use of entropy coding. Overall, the various combined improvements result in the modified iLBC (with entropy coding) achieving a rate reduction of 2.0 to 2.9 kbps when compared to the original fixed-rate iLBC without any loss in quality. In comparisons with adaptive multi-rate (AMR), the modified iLBC coder remarkably exhibits equivalent perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) scores as the AMR coder at 10.2 and 12.2 kbps, and out-performs AMR for all packet loss rates. This is a significant result as the modified iLBC performs equivalent to AMR without exploiting inter-frame redundancies

In this work, we investigate the design of scalar quantizers for the Wyner-Ziv problem, where the decoder has access to a noisy copy of the source. Necessary conditions are given for the design of optimum quantizers with a fixed number of partitions for a criterion consisting of a linear combination of distortion and rate. A simple iterative algorithm is developed to tackle the new quantizer design problem. The new algorithm generalizes the well-known Lloyd type I algorithm. The new approach will, in general, yield different scalar quantizers than the traditional approaches and these new quantizers provide some advantages. We also develop approximations to simplify quantizer design for high rate cases. With such approximations, the traditional optimal fixed-rate and entropy-constrained scalar quantizers are shown to remain optimum under certain conditions.
