This paper presents analysis and design of bitplane parallel architecture for embedded block coding with optimization truncation (EBCOT) tier-1 in JPEG2000. By detailed analysis of bitplane parallel context modeling, we discover the reason that causes the degradation of the parallel entropy coding performance. Two improved methods, referred to as data-pairs ordering (DPO) and flexible MQ (FMQ) coder are proposed. The coding speed can be improved greatly by using the improved bitplane parallel coding methods. Compared with the conventional bitplane parallel architecture, our architecture can decrease about 24% of the computation time.

A cost effective bit-plane coder with throughput enhancement in JPEG2000 applications is proposed. Many papers and the results of chip implementation show that memory requirement dominates the hardware cost of the bit-plane coder. In order to reduce the memory size, a memory-free algorithm is proposed to eliminate state variable memories by calculating three coding state variables (/spl gamma//sub p+1/[n], /spl sigma//sub p+1/[n], and /spl pi//sub p/[n]) on the fly. We also propose a stripe-column-based pass-parallel operation to perform three coding passes in pipeline operation and to encode four samples within the stripe-column concurrently for the high throughput requirement. Experimental results show that the hardware cost and memory size of the proposed architecture is smaller than other existing architectures because of the proposed memory-free algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed architecture has 3 times greater throughput than other familiar architectures.

During the past few years, much effort has been devoted for efficient coding of video. However, this high coding efficiency results in an increased sensitivity to transmission errors. This is the motivation for developing techniques allowing us altogether to transmit video sequences efficiently and to be robust to the transmission errors. This paper proposes a joint source-channel coding scheme using motion-compensated oversampled filterbanks (OFB). Previous work for robust transmission using OFB have concentrated on still images. Here, OFB are combined with motion compensation techniques. The redundancy introduced by the overcomplete representation is employed for error correction of the motion compensated frames. Experiments have shown that performance is acceptable even when the compressed stream is transmitted through a binary symmetric channel with crossover probability of 10/sup -2/.

Transcoding is a technique to convert one video bit-stream into another. While homogeneous transcoding is done at the same coding standard, inhomogeneous transcoding converts from one standard format to another standard. Inhomogeneous transcoding between MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or H.263 was performed using the same transform. With the standardisation of H.264 also a new transform basis and different block size was defined. For requantization from block size 8times8 to 4times4 this leads to the effect that the quantization error of one coefficient in a block of size 8times8 is distributed over multiple coefficients in blocks of size 4times4. In our work, we analyze the requantization process for inhomogeneous transcoding with different transforms. The deduced equations result in an expression for the correlation of the error contributions from the coefficients of block size 8times8 at each coefficient of block size 4times4. We then compare the mathematical analysis to simulations on real sequences. The reference to the requantization process is the direct quantization of the undistorted signal. It will be shown that the loss is as high as 3 dB PSNR at equivalent step size for input and output bitstream. Also an equation for the choice of the second quantization step size in dependency of the requantization loss is deduced. The model is then extended from the DCT to the integer-based transform as defined in H.264

An area efficient architecture for the embedded block coding in JPEG 2000 is implemented on a 1.23 mm 2 die using 0.18 mum CMOS technology. This chip can support 16.7 MS/s lossless encoding. The area of the proposed architecture is only 1/6 of the conventional architectures while the throughput is the same as others. The proposed architecture has the highest performance comparing with other existing architectures according to the experimental results

Some novel approaches are presented aiming at reducing computation and memory for the EBCOT algorithm in JPEG2000. In the current structure of EBCOT, the algorithm for calculating the distortion reduction is still too complex for hardware-oriented design, and the memory space needed for the storage of large amounts of rate-distortion slopes is often unaffordable. In this paper, we propose a set of simplification schemes based on some approximate treatments by means of quantization median substitution and logarithm expression. These approaches can facilitate calculation of the rate-distortion slopes and reduce the memory by 50% (only 8 bits for each slope). Experimental results show that the quality of decoded images has only slightly decreased, which is negligible for most of the applications.

The soft decoding of variable-length encoded texture data generated, e.g., by video coders such as H.263+ and sent over a packetized network (Internet or mixed Internet radio-mobile) is considered here. Existing soft decoding techniques usually make use of either the number of bits in a block or the number of symbols in a block. Thus, this side information has to be transmitted. This paper describes an algorithm making use only of information available in the packetized bitstream, and is thus compatible with existing standards. Simulations illustrating the efficiency of the proposed decoding procedure are provided.

Lossless compression is necessary for many high performance applications such as geophysics, telemetry, nondestructive evaluation, and medical imaging, which require exact recoveries of original images. Lossless image compression can be always modeled as a two-stage procedure: decorrelation and entropy coding. The first stage removes spatial redundancy or inter-pixel redundancy by means of run-length coding, SCAN language based methodology, predictive techniques, transform techniques, and other types of decorrelation techniques. The second stage, which includes Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, and LZW, removes coding redundancy. Nowadays, the performances of entropy coding techniques are very close to its theoretical bound, and thus more research activities concentrate on decorrelation stage. JPEG-LS and JPEG-2000 are the latest ISO/ITU standards for compressing continuous-tone images. JPEG-LS is based on LOCO-I algorithm, which was chosen to incorporate the standard due to its good balance between complexity and efficiency. Another technique proposed for JPEG-LS was CALIC. JPEG-2000 was designed with the main objective of providing efficient compression for a wide range of compression ratios.

In this paper, we first propose an embedded wavelet image coding algorithm based on zero-blocks and array structures - called EZBA. Then, we discuss the hardware realization of the algorithm. In comparison with other methods, the EZBA is simpler to be realized and has higher compression efficiency. For hardware realization, we implement two main parts. One is the discrete wavelet transform (DWT); the other is the architecture of retrieving and coding algorithm (the EZBA itself). Experimental results show that the proposed EZBA outperforms other wavelet-based image coding schemes.
