This paper presents a multiple description (MD) video codec based on the principles side-information coding. In particular, we highlight certain key components of the codec design that contribute significantly to the rate-distortion performance of the proposed codec. These include the use of randomized permutations of the quantization codebook in conjunction with binary LDPC codes for partitioning the available bit-rate among the coefficient bit-planes. Another key component of the proposed codec is the use of pdf estimation for improved decoder reconstruction. Lastly, we use a bank of sequential LDPC decoders to efficiently decode the transmitted coset information. Empirical evaluation demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed codec for the communication of encoded video over packet erasure channels.

A lifted wavelet-based compression scheme with effective image-column random access for coding image datasets is proposed. This image dataset compression scheme is based on the approach of a lifted wavelet transform combined with embedded block entropy coding. This approach is adapted to compressing the image datasets used for image-based virtual environment navigation and facilitating a column random access mechanism. A specific data structure is designed to achieve efficient compression and accommodate column random access. The code stream syntax is constructed to efficiently assemble bit streams corresponding to the designed data structure. The two-level index tables in the code stream are used to assist random access. This image dataset compression scheme features a proper compromise between the coding efficiency and the random access flexibility, and thus ensures fast interactive image rendering. It reduces the decoding delay, simplifies the implementation of a random access mechanism and easily facilitates real-time image decoding. Experimental results of the software implementation of this image dataset compression scheme show its superior coding performance over the standard JPEG and JPEG 2000 schemes.

This paper describes an implementation of a lossless digital waveform coder as a soft-core CPU custom instruction for use in portable electrocardiogram (ECG) recording systems. Holter monitors are portable ECG recorders that are designed to be worn by the patient for a typical period of 24~48 hours. Such systems can generate large quantities of data, necessitating some form of coding to reduce the size of the stored data. Traditionally, ECG coding methods employ lossy approaches. While such methods can attain better compression than a lossless method, the reduction in signal fidelity may obscure important details in the signal. The coding algorithm implemented consists of a linear decorrelator selected from analysis of a block of samples, followed by entropy coding of the residual using Golomb-Rice codes. The implementation is designed as a custom instruction for the Altera Nios CPU, and when tested on signals from real ECG libraries, performed approximately seven times faster than a software implementation written in C and running on the same CPU

Random binning arguments underlie many results in information theory. In this paper we introduce and analyze a novel type of causal random binning "sequential" binning. This binning is used to get streaming Slepian-Wolf codes with an "anytime" character. At the decoder, the probability of estimation error on any particular symbol goes to zero exponentially fast with delay. In the non-distributed context, we show equivalent results for fixed-rate streaming entropy coding. Because of space constraints, we present full derivations only for the latter, stating the results for the distributed problem. We give bounds on error exponents for both universal and maximum-likelihood decoders

As a key part of universal source coding, context quantization is very important for improving compression performance. However, in most existing methods, the quantizer is trained offline and is fixed due to the complexity of finding a good quantizer and the significant overhead of representing the quantizer. This paper proposes a novel online context quantization approach that achieves high coding efficiency with low quantizer overhead and computational complexity. It first partitions the context into groups according to the number of significant context events. A layer-based context quantization is then applied on these groups. The proposed method is applied for embedded wavelet image coding. Compared with the JPEG2000 coder, up to 0.6 dB improvements can be achieved on the standard 512 /spl times/ 512 test images. And more improvements are observed on images at lower resolutions.

In a typical multi-chip handheld system for multi-media applications, external access, which is usually dominated by block-based video content, induces more than half of total system power. Embedded compression (EC) effectively reduces external access caused by video content by reducing the data size. In this paper, an algorithm and a hardware architecture of a new type EC codec engine with multiple modes are presented. Lossless mode, and lossy modes with rate control modes and quality control modes are all supported by single algorithm. The proposed four-tree pipelining scheme can reduce 83% latency and 67% buffer size between transform and entropy coding. The proposed EC codec engine can save 50%, 61%, and 77% external access at lossless mode, half-size mode, and quarter-size mode and can be used in various system power conditions. With Artisan 0.18 /spl mu/m cell library, the proposed EC codec engine can encode or decode at VGA@30fps with area and power consumption of 293,605 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ and 3.36 mW.

Summary form only given. Image compression has progressed from pixel-level entropy coding to transform coding applied to fixed regions (e.g., JPEG-2K with rectangular blocks). Our interest is in substitutions applied to arbitrarily-shaped regions. For example, object-based compression (OBC) segments disjoint, contiguous image regions, and compactly approximates each region's boundary and content (e.g., represented by a codebook exemplar). When region boundaries closely approximate scene object boundaries, OBC resembles object recognition. Disadvantages include cost of segmentation and region boundary representation, and pixel- or object-level distortion in the decompressed image.

The chip design of prediction core in the stereo video hybrid coding system is implemented with 0.18 mum 1P6M technology by TSMC. The die size is 4.53 mm. This IC can achieve real-time requirement under the operating frequency of 81 MHz for 30 D1 frames per second (fps) in the left and the right channel simultaneously, with ME/DE search range of [-64, +63] in horizontal direction and [-32, +31]/[-16, +15] in vertical direction. Compared with the hardware requirement for implementation of full search block matching algorithm (FSBMA), only 11.5% on-chip SRAM and 1/30 amount of PEs are needed. It shows that the hardware cost is quite small

Unsolicited bulk e-mail, also known as spam, has been an increasing problem for the e-mail society. This paper presents a new spam filtering strategy that 1) uses a practical entropy coding technique, Huffman coding, to dynamically encode the feature space of e-mail collections over time and, 2) applies an online algorithm to adaptively enhance the learned spam concept as new e-mail data becomes available. The contributions of this work include a highly efficient spam filtering algorithm in which the input space is radically reduced to a single-dimension input vector, and an adaptive learning technique that is robust to vocabulary change, concept drifting and skewed data distribution. We compare our technique to several existing off-line learning techniques including support vector machine, naive Bayes, k-nearest neighbor, C4.5 decision tree, RBFNetwork, boosted decision tree and stacking, and demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique by presenting the experimental results on the e-mail data that is publicly available
