Motion-compensated temporal filtering is an essential ingredient of recently developed wavelet-based scalable video coding schemes. The lifting implementation of these decompositions represents a versatile tool for spatio-temporal optimizations and numerous improvements have thus been proposed. An additional feature has been introduced lately by providing a 3-band lifting temporal decomposition, allowing non-dyadic scalability factors. The paper presents a motion-compensated scheme which is the 3-band equivalent of the 5/3 temporal filterbank. The proposed structure does not enter the classical lifting framework and therefore its invertibility is studied. Simulation results show higher coding efficiency, improved visual quality and more flexibility compared to the previously introduced Haar-like 2 or 3-band schemes.

It is well observed that usually the run-length of successive zero coefficients becomes longer and the magnitude of non-zero coefficients gets smaller while the DCT subband frequency increases. Therefore, the probability distributions of level/run combinations should be different at different DCT positions. Based on this observation, an efficient context based 2D-VLC entropy coder, especially designed for 8/spl times/8 DCT, is proposed to exploit this context characteristic. The key element of the proposed coder is to design multiple 2D-VLC tables and each can be used context-adaptively to match different level/run combination probability distributions better. Another key element is the usage of exponential-Golomb codes, which keep the multiple tables with low memory requirement. In terms of coding efficiency, the experimental results show that the proposed method can gain up to 0.23 dB when compared to the one-table-for-one-block coding method.

In the paper, an 8/spl times/8 DCT approach is adopted to perform subband decomposition, followed by modified SPIHT data organization and entropy coding. The translation function has the ability to retain the detail characteristics of an image. By means of a simple transformation to gather the DCT spectrum data with the same frequency domain, the translation function exploits all the characteristics of all individual blocks to a global framework. In this scheme, insignificant DCT coefficients that correspond to the same spatial location in the high-frequency subbands can be used to reduce the redundancy by a combined function proposed in associated with the modified SPIHT. Simulation results showed that the embedded DCT-CSPIHT image compression reduced the computational complexity to only a quarter of the wavelet based subband decomposition and improved the quality of the reconstructed medical image in terms of both the peak PSNR and the perceptual results over JPEG2000 and the original SPIHT at the same bit rate.

We present a line-based adaptive lossless video compression (LALVC) algorithm for interactive multimedia applications that demand low complexity and low latency. Communications between high-resolution display and storage devices require high bandwidth for exchanging raw data. To reduce cost of video transmission without losing data accuracy, lossless video compression is necessary. Considering low complexity and low delay, LALVC adopts a simple and efficient architecture that adopts one-pass, raster-scan, transform-free coding process and a simple predictor. For low latency, zero-motion prediction and one-frame buffer are used to reduce temporal redundancy. In addition, to maximize the coding efficiency for both natural and computer-generated video sequences, LALVC adaptively selects the best coding mode for each line of a frame. The entropy coding of each line is based on Golomb code that can enhance coding efficiency with less computation load and is easy for hardware realization. The simulation results show that temporal preprocessing and line-based mode decision of LALVC can increase compression ratio with properly increased complexity as compared to that of JPEG-LS.

A channel code allocation scheme is developed for transmission of video over error-prone channels. The system is designed to minimize the expected distortion of the video under a quality constraint. It is based on the Viterbi algorithm and achieves a very robust bit stream, also in mismatch situations. It is further shown that the distribution of available channel codes varies significantly with respect to the channel conditions.

A new context modelling scheme for arithmetic coding of motion vectors (MVs) is proposed. The model uses the correlation between the horizontal and vertical components of the MVs to improve the probability estimation of symbols. The accurate probability estimation can therefore improve the efficiency of the context-based arithmetic coder. The proposed scheme has been adapted to the H.264 advanced video codec and the simulation results show that a considerable bit rate saving can be achieved in MV coding.

We consider the problem of optimum joint information embedding and lossy compression with respect to a fidelity criterion. The decompressed composite sequence (stegotext) is distorted by a stationary memoryless attack, resulting in a forgery which in turn is fed into the decoder, whose task is to retrieve the embedded information. The paper characterizes the maximum achievable embedding rate, R/sub e/, (the embedding capacity, C/sub e/) as a function of the compression (composite) rate R/sub c/ and the allowed average distortion level, /spl Delta/, such that the average probability of error in decoding the embedded message can be made arbitrarily small for sufficiently large block length. We characterize the embedding capacity and demonstrate how it can be approached in principle. We also provide a single-letter expression of the minimum achievable composite rate as a function of R/sub e/ and /spl Delta/, below which there exists no reliable embedding scheme.

In this paper a novel error resilient MQ coder for reliable JPEG 2000 image delivery is designed. The proposed coder uses a forbidden symbol in order to force a given amount of redundancy in the codestream. At the decoder side, the presence of the forbidden symbol allows for powerful error correction. Moreover the added redundancy can be easily controlled and the proposed coder is kept backward compatible with MQ. In this work excellent improvements in the case of image transmission across both BSC and AWGN channels are obtained by means of a maximum a posteriori estimation technique.

It is well known that low bit rate BDCT coded image exhibits visually annoying coding artifacts. In this paper, we proposed a POCS (projection onto convex sets)-based deblocking algorithm using a novel region smoothness constraint for the class of graphic images. For this type of image, there usually exists large smooth varying regions. Current POCS based deblocking algorithms usually do not enforce smoothness across several blocks. In our method, the BDCT (block-based discrete cosine transform) coded image is modeled using a smooth, spatially adaptive, thin-plate spline surface, and the region smoothness constraint set is constructed from this spline surface. The spline modeling allows us to model the long range smoothness across the smooth region. Simulation experiments indicated that blockiness in smooth regions is effectively suppressed while genuine edges are preserved.

There are many different source and channel coding standard, configurations, modulation schemes, and multiple access algorithms. What are the impacts of these schemes to the source contents in terms of entropy abstract? What are implications to the wired and wireless communication channels that these schemes and technologies bring? This paper painted a picture from the entropy abstract variance point of view of the different schemes towards the contents that passed through different wired and wireless channel, quantitatively and qualitatively. The redundancies of the coding scheme are also checked mathematically so that we can have a solid foundation for future coding considerations.
