An ideal triangle mesh compression technology would simultaneously support the following three objectives: (1) progressive refinements of the received mesh during decompression, (2) nearly optimal compression ratios for both geometry and connectivity, and (3) in-line, real-time decompression algorithms for hardware or software implementations. Because these three objectives impose contradictory constraints, previously reported efforts focus primarily on one - sometimes two - of these objectives. The SQUEEZE technique introduced here addresses all three constraints simultaneously, and attempts to provide the best possible compromise. For a mesh of T triangles, SQUEEZE compresses the connectivity to 3.7T bits, which is competitive with the best progressive compression techniques reported so far. The geometry prediction error encoding technique introduced here leads to 20% improved geometry compression over previous schemes. Our initial implementation on a 300 Mhz CPU achieves a decompression rate of up to 46'000 triangles per second. SQUEEZE downloads a model through a number of successive refinement stages, providing the benefit of progressivity.

Two source-channel coding strategies, tandem coding and channel-optimized quantization, are compared on the basis of distortion vs. complexity. For each, formulas for the mean-squared error and complexity used to minimize distortion subject to a complexity constraint. The results suggest there is a threshold such that tandem coding is better than channel-optimized quantization when and only when the complexity constraint is larger than the threshold.

We introduce a mixed fixed-length coding (FLC) and variable-length coding (VLC) technique to improve the error resilience of the upcoming JPEG2000 image coding standard. Our proposed method operates on quantized subband coefficients, and produces a bit-stream with both FLC and VLC codewords. Higher error resilience is achieved by eliminating the error propagation within FLC sections, which in general comprise the majority of the coded bit-stream. A highly efficient coding technique has been developed to generate fixed-length codewords for groups of quantization indices, and significantly reduce the amount of information to be entropy coded. However, the noiseless compression performance is not compromised. Every effect has been made to minimize the impact of our modifications to the baseline coding structure and the bit-stream syntax defined in the standard, so the proposed technique can be easily integrated into any JPEG2000 compliant system.

Video compression enables a number of applications by reducing the required bit rate needed to represent a video sequence, however the compressed video is much more susceptible to errors such as bit errors or packet loss. Conventional video compression standards employ an architecture which we refer to as single-state systems since they have a prediction loop with a single state (e.g. the previous decoded frame) which if lost or corrupted can lead to the loss or severe degradation of all subsequent frames until the state is reinitialized (the prediction is refreshed). We combat this problem of incorrect state and error propagation at the decoder by coding the video into multiple independently decodable streams, each with its own prediction process and state, such that if one stream is lost the other streams can still be used to produce usable video. The correctly received streams provide improved error concealment and, more importantly, enable faster state recovery for the lost stream. This approach is conceptually similar to multiple description coding, however it differs in the representation used for each description as well as its use of state recovery.

We propose the employment of hierarchical enumerative coding, an entropy coding method, for the entropy coding of DCT coefficients in a DCT-based image compression scheme. The following configuration is used for the comparisons: the 8/spl times/8 DCT coefficients are first rearranged to obtain a wavelet-transform-like layout. Then, an improved version of the morphological representation of wavelet data (MRWD) algorithm is applied for scanning the coefficients and encoding the locations of nonzero coefficients. Within this configuration, two alternative entropy coding methods, context-based arithmetic coding and hierarchical enumerative coding, are compared. Experimental results show that the performance of hierarchical enumerative coding is as good as that of arithmetic coding. Considering the little computational complexity of hierarchical enumerative coding, the equal compression performance suggests that hierarchical enumerative coding is a feasible alternative for the entropy coding of DCT coefficients.

We propose a simple but efficient wavelet image compression algorithm. The proposed coding scheme employs the multi-level dyadic wavelet decomposition, linear quantization with a proper dead zone, 1-D addressing complexity by raster scanning within subbands, variable length block coding, small alphabet representation of 1-D integer sequences, and adaptive arithmetic entropy coding. Despite the simplicity of the proposed coding scheme, the rate-distortion performance of the proposed image compression algorithm is competitive with the best image coders in the literature.

In this paper, we propose a very simple image compression scheme. The proposed coding scheme employs the multi-level dyadic wavelet decomposition, linear quantization with a proper dead zone, and then it converts the quantized wavelet coefficients into three 1-D sequences for adaptive arithmetic coding. First, some of the clustered zeros in the multi-level dyadic wavelet decomposition are represented with the quadtree code, and then the remaining zeros and non-zero integers are arranged as a 1-D sequence by raster scanning. Next, the resulting integer sequence is decomposed into two 1-D sequences with small alphabet. Despite the simplicity of the proposed coding scheme, the rate-distortion performance of the proposed image compression algorithm is competitive with the best image coders in the literature.

A novel embedded image coding method denoted as cluster growing embedding (CGE) is proposed. Similar to some of state-of-the-art wavelet image coding algorithms, CGE can encode images efficiently by exploiting the self-similarity cross subband in the wavelet domain. By utilizing morphological dilation, CGE forms significance clusters in each wavelet subband, and then exploits the parent-child relationship between subbands to encode the significance map information of one image. A salient new feature of CGE is that it tries to first encode the significance bits in the neighborhood of those already formed clusters. Therefore, CGE is more compatible to the functionality of embedded coding.

Outlines an algorithm for searching minimum bit rate wavelet packet representations in a high quality wavelet-based perceptual audio coder. The algorithm applies wavelet tree and prototype filter adaptation to a perceptual cost function. To achieve such adaptive structure, a periodized wavelet packet transform is performed for each audio frame. After the transform, the encoder employs scalar adaptive quantization, controlled by a psycho-acoustic model in the wavelet domain, followed by entropy coding and bit packing. An adaptive Huffman algorithm that assumes Laplacian distributions for wavelet coefficients is used for entropy coding. A relevant feature of our coder is the method to translate the psycho-acoustic information to the wavelet domain, which allows using orthonormal wavelets of any compact support. Experimental results indicate that our coder ensures 'transparent' coding of monophonic CD audio signals at bit rates lower than 64 kb/s for all the test signals.

We address a limitation of video compression standards that affects their coding efficiency. The standard methods use one or two Huffman codes for all DCT run-length events. This implicitly assumes that the statistics of DCT run-length events are nearly stationary, but they are not. There is room for significant improvement in coding efficiency by the use of conditional Huffman codes. We propose to condition the Huffman codes for runlength events on the values of previous events in the block, the quantization parameter, and other information available to the decoder. We give a systematic way of designing optimal sets of Huffman codes, to give the maximum gain in coding efficiency for a given number of codes. We achieve significant improvements in coding efficiency over the standard methods with a reasonable number of codes, in low bit rate compression. Our method is non-adaptive and has little effect on the running time of the encoder or decoder.
