We present some preliminary results from our investigation of two forms of erasure-correction coding, fountain coding and network coding, when they are employed for file transfers in a distributed packet radio network. The radios adapt the modulation and channel coding of the transmitted signals in response to variations in fading on the links of the network. The control information for the adaptive transmission protocol is provided by simple statistics that are derived in the demodulators and decoders of the radio receivers.

In this paper, resource allocation problem for multicast service in OFDM-based wireless cellular networks is investigated and a coding-based opportunistic scheduling scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, according to frequency resource and time resource, layered coding and erasure-correction coding are adopted, respectively. Layered coding divides the data into base layer and enhancement layer, which transmits the data in different rates to maximize the system capacity;erasure-correction coding compensates for the possible packet loss due to instantaneous channel information. To complete subcarrier allocation and bit loading for the coding-based scheme, a practical algorithm is designed. As only the users' mean channel gains are required, the proposed scheme reduces the overheads required for instantaneous channel information and is suitable for a fast time-varying fading environment. Numerical results show that the coding-based scheme can get significant performance improvement compared with the scheme without coding.

This paper presents an adaptive hopping transmission strategy for secondary users (SUs) to access temporarily idle frequency-slots of a licensed frequency band in consideration of the random return of primary users (PUs), aiming to maximize the overall SU throughput. A SU dynamically hops over multiple idle frequency-slots, each with an adaptive activity factor so that possible PU return in a frequency-slot may destroy only a small fraction of the SU transmission that can be recovered by erasure-correction coding. SU activity factor optimization problems are formulated to develop adaptive SU access algorithms for both centralized and distributed structures. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness and demonstrate performance gains of the proposed approach as compared to existing schemes.
