A large number of practical coding scenarios deal with sources such as transform coefficients that can be well modeled as Laplacians. For regular coding of such sources, samples are often quantized by a family of uniform quantizers possibly with a deadzone, and then entropy, coded. For the Wyner-Ziv coding problem when correlated side-information is available at the decoder, the side-information can be modeled as obtained by additive Laplacian or Gaussian noise on the source. This paper deals with optimal choice of parameters for practical Wyner-Ziv coding in such scenarios, using the same quantizer family as in the regular codec to cover a range of rate-distortion trade-offs, given the variances of the source and additive noise. We propose and analyze a general encoding model that combines source coding and channel coding and show that at practical block lengths and code complexities, not pure channel coding but a hybrid combination of source coding and channel coding with right parameters provide optimal rate-distortion performance. Further, for the channel coded bit-planes we observe that only high-rate codes are useful. We also provide a framework for on-the-fly parameter choice based on non-parametric representation of a set of seed functions, for use in scenarios where variances are estimated during encoding A good understanding of the optimal parameter selection mechanism is essential for building practical distributed codecs.

The high bandwidth density and low power consumption characteristics of silicon photonics devices can provide a high performance interconnect solution for multiprocessor systems. At the same time this technology also poses a new set of constraints and challenges in architecting, designing, and integrating such systems. The "macrochip" multiprocessor architecture leverages a photonically interconnected array of processor and/or memory chips to provide a flexible platform to build heterogeneous systems. The design considerations for such a system are influenced largely by the system architecture, the programming model and devices needed for their implementation. This talk will first describe the macrochip platform, technology constraints and potential interconnect solutions with the various device building blocks. Then it will present some topology choices that range from a WDM point-to-point interconnect to more complex switched data channel networks. It will close with a detailed analysis of these design choices and show the impact of the device constraints on performance and power consumption along with some recent ultra-low power device implementation results.

The use of Helmet-Mounted Display/Tracker (HMD/Ts) is becoming widespread for air-to-air, within visual range target acquisition for a tactical fighter pilot. HMD/Ts provide the aircrew with a significant amount of information on the helmet, which reduces the burden of the aircrew from having to continually look down in the cockpit to receive information. HMD/Ts allow the aircrew to receive flight and targeting information regardless of line-of-sight, which should increase the aircrew's situation awareness and mission effectiveness. Current technology requires that a pilot wearing a Helmet Mounted Display/Tracker be connected to the aircraft with a cable. The design of this cable is complex, costly, and its use can decrease system reliability. Most of the problems associated with the use of cable can be alleviated by using wireless transmission for all signals. This will significantly reduce or eliminate the requirements of the interconnect cable/connector reducing system complexity, and cost, and enhancing system safety. A number of wireless communication technologies have been discussed in this paper and the rationale for selecting one particular technology for this application has been shown. The problems with this implementation and the direction of the future effort are outlined.

Optical algebraic processors can perform complex calculations in parallel and at high speeds. However, they commonly suffer from a low analog accuracy which hinders their widespread application. error detection and correction codes provide one technique for improving the accuracy of optical algebraic processors. The use of these codes would allow some of the errors that may occur during a computation to be detected and possibly corrected. This paper describes the results of various computer simulations of optical matrix-vector multipliers employing error-correction codes. It discusses the application of convolutional codes to optical matrix-vector multipliers along with several block codes. Both binary and nonbinary codes are considered. The results indicate that a significant improvement in performance can be obtained when compared with processors not employing error-correction codes. Also, the type of noise, whether signal-independent or signal-dependent noise, has a significant effect on the performance of a matrix-vector multiplier employing an error code. The encoding and decoding operations required for the error codes can be performed optically.

A review of the existing rain erosion test capabilities has shown that it is difficult to obtain multiple waterdrop impacts on materials over an extended range of supersonic velocities which are both well-documented and at moderate cost. Recognition of this deficiency motivated the development of a facility located at General Research Corporation (GRC) in Santa Barbara, CA to provide controlled multiple1 simulated waterdrop impact conditions for impact velocities from 300 to 1700 ms (up to Mach 5). A collection of particles, selected for their capacity to simulate waterdrop impact damage, are propelled at the target using a 50 mm powder gun. The development and anticipated capability of this facility is described. A discussion is then presented of the planned test program designed to formulate and validate damage models for electromagnetic (EM) window materials in the supersonic flight regime.

The Advanced Train control Systems (ATCS) specification provides a generator polynomial for calculating a vital Cyclic Redundancy Checksum (CRC) for computer-based communication and control. Unfortunately, very little if any published information exists concerning its design and performance. This paper presents an analysis of a code that uses the generator polynomial, providing what the authors believe is the first evidence of the minimum Hamming distance, thus supporting the use of the generator polynomial to provide vital serial communication in safety-critical railway systems.

This paper holds an information about an extension module for Single Board Computer (MIP405), which is the heart of On-board Data Handling Module (OBDH) of student Earth's microsatellite - SSETI ESEO. OBDH is a PC104 stack of four boards electrically connected and mechanically fixed. On-Board Computer is a key subsystem to the mission success - it is responsible for distribution of control signals to each module of the spacecraft. It is also expected to gather critical data for an appropriate mission progress, implementation of a part of algorithms used for satellite stabilization and orbit control and, at last, processing telecommands. Since whole system should meet spaceborne application requirements, it must be exceptionally reliable.

Imaging page-oriented optical data storage, with its high bit packing density and many parallel readout channels, offers a solution for high capacity data storage with fast data transfer rate. As in any data storage system, increasing the packing density increases the effect of inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-page interference (IPI). We describe a combination of modulation encoding/decoding and error correction that overcomes this interference allowing high packing density in the presence of noise while maintaining acceptable bit error rate (BER). We also describe an extension of the algorithm to multi-level (grayscale) encoding.

Traditional thermoelectric cooling relies on the Peltier effect which produces a temperature drop limited by the figure of merit, zT. This cooling limit is not required from classical thermodynamics but can be traced to problems of thermoelectric compatibility. Alternatively, if a thermoelectric cooler can be designed to achieve full thermoelectric compatibility, lower temperature can be achieved even if the zT is low. In such a device the Thomson effect plays an important role. We present the theoretical concept of a "Thomson cooler," for cryogenic cooling which is designed to maintain thermoelectric compatibility and we derive the requirements for the Seebeck coefficient.

Channel reciprocity in a bidirectional turbulent channel implies that the received powers are correlated to a certain extent at both link ends. In this paper, we investigate by numerical phase-screen propagation simulation the variation of the channel correlation under various boundary conditions, namely orthogonal wind speed, link distance, receiver aperture and turbulence-strength profile for inter High Altitude Platform (HAP) FSO links. Finally, we provide an outlook to different error control coding (ECC) methods that make use of the reciprocity effect.
