The use of Helmet-Mounted Display/Tracker (HMD/Ts) is becoming widespread for air-to-air, within visual range target acquisition for a tactical fighter pilot. HMD/Ts provide the aircrew with a significant amount of information on the helmet, which reduces the burden of the aircrew from having to continually look down in the cockpit to receive information. HMD/Ts allow the aircrew to receive flight and targeting information regardless of line-of-sight, which should increase the aircrew's situation awareness and mission effectiveness. Current technology requires that a pilot wearing a Helmet Mounted Display/Tracker be connected to the aircraft with a cable. The design of this cable is complex, costly, and its use can decrease system reliability. Most of the problems associated with the use of cable can be alleviated by using wireless transmission for all signals. This will significantly reduce or eliminate the requirements of the interconnect cable/connector reducing system complexity, and cost, and enhancing system safety. A number of wireless communication technologies have been discussed in this paper and the rationale for selecting one particular technology for this application has been shown. The problems with this implementation and the direction of the future effort are outlined.

Data compression is popularly applied to computer systems and communication systems. Especially, lossless compression is applied to text compression. Since compressed data are very sensitive to errors, several error control methods for data compression using probability model, such as for arithmetic coding, have been proposed. This paper proposes to apply an unequal error protection, or a UEP, scheme to LZ77 coding and LZW coding. This investigates a structure of the compressed data and clarifies a part which is more sensitive to errors than the other by using theoretical analysis and computer simulation. The UEP scheme protects the error-sensitive part from errors more strongly than the others. Computer simulation says that the proposed scheme can recover from errors in the compressed data more effectively than the conventional methods.

We consider a communication setup where two source streams with different decoding deadlines, must be simultaneously transmitted over a single channel subjected to burst erasures. The encoder multiplexes the two source streams into a single stream of channel-packets. The decoder must recover the two source streams sequentially by their corresponding deadlines. One of the streams, the urgent stream, has a smaller delay than the other stream. We study the capacity region for such a setting for a certain range of system parameters. We divide the system into three different cases based on the relative values of the delays. For each case we provide achievability and converse bounds, which match under certain conditions. Our proposed coding scheme involves a careful construction of the parity check packets by jointly coding across the two streams despite different deadlines. Interestingly it is possible to transmit the urgent stream at a certain positive rate even when the sum rate equals the capacity associated with the less urgent stream. A separation based approach where we apply separate single-stream codes to each stream is suboptimal. Although our capacity results assume a simplistic channel model with a single erasure burst, we further demonstrate that our proposed code constructions also provide significant performance gains in simulations over statistical channel models with random bursts.

The aim of this application is to detect changes in an aerial scene by comparing stereo pairs taken at intervals of several years in order to update a database. The result is a set of image locations that have a high likelihood to contain changes. Each location will be submitted to a human operator who will either validate the given change and update the database or reject it. We are mainly interested in changes occuring for a specific class of objects : buildings. To isolate new construction, we provide an algorithm that works in two steps. First, during a focusing phase, we aim to eliminate a large part of the scene without losing any actual changes. This is achieved with a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) comparison between the two different dates. Then, in the second phase, we classify regions of interest (ROI). Each ROI is described by four images : a stereo pair of the focusing area at the first date and a stereo pair of the focusing area at the second date. To decide whether or not the ROI contains a change., we classify each of the four images as "building" or "non-building". The building vs non-building classifier is a combination of several decision trees induced by learning. Each node of a decision tree is identified with a graph of features which is more likely to describe buildings than background. Finally, the classification results at the two different dates are compared.

In the internetworking world, switches and routers have been deployed for workgroup and enterprise connectivity. In the past, switches mainly operated at Layer 2 (they were extensions of bridges), while routers were clearly Layer3 devices. Recently, the line has blurred and switches operating at Layer 3 are becoming more popular. This paper explains the Linux Bridge, Layer 2 Switches, Virtual LAN (VLAN) and Layer 3 Switches. The flow chart of Layer 3 switches and working routine related to Layer 3 switch technology were investigated in detail. This paper presents a new method to implement layer 3 switching that is entirely accomplished in software and is embedded implemented by code transplanting based on PowerPC 460GT platform.

Spin torque transfer random access memory (STT-RAM) is a promising memory technology because of its fast read access, high storage density, and very low standby power. These memories have reliability issues that need to be better understood before they can be adopted as a mainstream memory technology. In this paper, we first study the causes of errors for a single STT memory cell. We see that process variations and variations in the device geometry affect their failure rate and develop error models to capture these effects. Next we propose a joint technique based on tuning of circuit level parameters and error control coding (ECC) to achieve very high reliability. Such a combination allows the use of weaker ECC with smaller overhead. For instance, we show that by applying voltage boosting and write pulse width adjustment, the error correction capability (t) of ECC can be reduced from t=11 to t=3 to achieve a block failure rate (BFR) of 10(-9).

Several applications could benefit from large-scale reliable multicast of small messages. For example, the problems of propagating invalidations for web-cache consistency, dissemination of stock quotes to traders, and propagation of information about web updates to search engines all require reliable multicast of small messages. While multicasting is itself an active area of research, and each of the problems mentioned have received attention in literature., there are no guiding principles for facilitating multicast of small messages. First. we outline a global rendezvous architecture (GRA) - an application-level architecture for large-scale reliable multicast of small messages. The main contributions of GRA are the global rendezvous point concept, the join protocol for client, and the facility for trust across AS boundaries. Second, we describe QuickFlow, an architecture for web cache consistency that utilizes GRA, and show the benefits of QuickFlow compared to previous approaches. Third, we show how FreshFlow, an architecture proposed for search engine freshness, follows GRA. We also present new results for FreshFlow that demonstrate the scalability of FreshFlow.

The development status of two Stepped-Frequency Ground Penetration Radars (SFGPR) is presented. The equipment described includes a unit that operates over the 1 to 3 GHz RF band and is intended for shallow buried mine detection, and a unit that operates over the 150 MHz to 1 GHz RF band and intended for buried waste site characterization to depths of 7 meters. The SFGPR uses coherent high-range resolution radar processing methods to develop a radar- surface-position by slant range (depth) display. An extension of coherent synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging techniques that can yield 2-D and 3-D subsurface imaging is also presented. Results achieved to date are presented in 2-D for the high-frequency system and 3- D for the low-frequency system.

LDPC convolutional codes have been shown to be capable of achieving the same capacity-approaching performance as LDPC block codes with iterative message passing decoding. In this dissertation, we present several methods of deriving families of time-varying and time-invariant LDPC convolutional codes from LDPC block codes. We demonstrate that the derived LDPC convolutional codes significantly outperform the underlying LDPC block codes, and we investigate the reasons for these "convolutional gains". It is well known that cycles in the Tanner graph representation of a sparse code affect the iterative decoding algorithm, with short cycles generally pushing its performance further away from optimum. Hence it is common practice to design codes that do not contain short cycles, so as to obtain independent messages in at least the initial iterations of the decoding process. We show that the derived LDPC convolutional codes have better graph-cycle properties than their block code counterparts. In particular, we show that the unwrapping process that is used to derive LDPC convolutional codes from LDPC block codes can "break" some cycles of the underlying LDPC block code, but cannot create any shorter cycles. We prove that any cycle in an LDPC convolutional code always maps to a cycle of the same or smaller length in the underlying LDPC block code. Minimum distance is an important code design parameter when the channel quality is high, since codewords that are minimum distance apart are the most likely to cause errors with ML or near-ML decoding. In this case, the minimum distance determines the so-called error floor behavior in the performance curve corresponding to high channel signal-to-noise ratios. Thus studying the minimum distance properties of a code family gives insight into its error floor behavior. We use asymptotic methods to calculate a lower bound on the free distance of several ensembles of asymptotically good LDPC convolutional codes derived from protograph-bas
