We study the problem of reducing power during data-retention in a standby static random access memory (SRAM). For successful data-retention, the supply voltage of an SRAM cell should be greater than a critical data retention voltage (DRV). Due to circuit parameter variations, the DRV for different cells on the same chip exhibits variation with a distribution having diminishing tail. For reliable data retention, the existing low-power design uses a worst-case technique in which a standby supply voltage that is larger than the highest DRV among all cells in an SRAM is used. Instead, our approach uses aggressive voltage reduction and counters the ensuing unreliability through a fault-tolerant memory architecture. The main results of this work are as follows: (i) We establish fundamental bounds on the power reduction in terms of the DRV-distribution using techniques from information theory. For the DRV-distribution of test-chip in [1], we show that 49% power reduction with respect to (w.r.t.) the worst-case is a fundamental lower bound while 40% power reduction w.r.t. the worst-case is achievable with a practical combinatorial scheme. (ii) We study the power reduction as a function of the block-length for low-latency codes since most applications using SRAM are latency constrained. We propose a reliable memory architecture based on the Hamming code for the next test-chip implementation with a predicted power reduction of 33% while accounting for coding overheads.

The data reliability of a front surface optical recording system using a 32 mm disk is demonstrated. The system has approximately the same areal density as the digital versatile disk (DVD) system but utilizes an enhanced error correction coding (ECC) architecture. Theoretical statistical error analysis of the ECC subsystem shows a significantly reduced miscorrection probability. Experimental results from laboratory smoke and dust contamination studies as well as real world experiments performed in an office, a smoky bar, and a greasy kitchen environment are discussed and confirm the robust performance of the system predicted by the theory.

For error-correction codes, the optimal coding rate can vary and depend on factors including channel, time-varying fading, environmental interference, power, bandwidth allocation, communication content, and application. Rate adaptive coding schemes are thus important for robust communications. This writeup proposes and studies a rate adaptive low density parity check (LDPC) coding scheme using non-binary Galois fields (GF). The algorithm uses a single low complexity encoding structure, but maintains strong near-capacity performance at arbitrary rational rates. The rate adaptive encoder can be used in a space-time code for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems and is shown to achieve near capacity performance at various rates and different MIMO configurations.

This paper investigates the performance of single and multiple TCP connections sharing a bandwidth-delay link. The link employs block-based error correction codes (ECC), along with interleaving which is first shown to affect the performance of a single TCP connection. We then examine impact of using ECC and interleaving on multiple connections on an ideal two-state fading channel. The results are obtained by numerical simulation of multiple TCP connections over the channel. Single TCP connection results show that the delay introduced by interleaving significantly affects TCP performance on a lossy channel. Without ECC, aggregate bandwidth of the channel is better utilized by multiple instances of TCP than by a single instance scenarios. However, this advantage seems to dissipate when significant ECC is introduced.

The theory analysis of the (7, 4) binary hamming coding and decoding algorithm in spread spectrum communication is given and implemented with C language programming. The verification testing is implemented on a HD 111 communication principle platform. The theory results are in consistent with that of the experiment. It shows that (7, 4) binary hamming coding could rectify one error symbol which would emerge in the signal transmission process.

Signal integrity analysis is a critical part in high-speed interconnect design. The common practices to account for noise effect like placement, routing, impedance matching and shielding are usually complex and costly. As data rate increases and layout size reduces, there are huge challenges in high-speed interconnect design. This paper discusses a new method to overcome the restriction from the perspective of tolerance to noise. By looking into the noise feature of the interconnect system from transient simulation, the relationship between design parameters and noise effect is established. Based on the noise model obtained above, the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code is applied. And the calculation of prior information when decoding is modified to make coding more applicable for the interconnection system. The bit error rate (BER) of transmission using this optimized LDPC coding is compared with the conventional one by simulation. And the result shows that the case with this new coding has excellent BER performance, demonstrating the feasibility of performance enhancement realized by this new method.

Integration of biometrics is considered as an attractive solution for the issues associated with password based human authentication as well as for secure storage and release of cryptographic keys which is one of the critical issues associated with modern cryptography. However, the widespread popularity of bio-cryptographic solutions are somewhat restricted by the fuzziness associated with biometric measurements. Therefore, error control mechanisms must be adopted to make sure that fuzziness of biometric inputs can be sufficiently countered. In this paper, we have outlined such existing techniques used in bio-cryptography while explaining how they are deployed in different types of solutions. Finally, we have elaborated on the important facts to be considered when choosing appropriate error correction mechanisms for a particular biometric based solution.

In order to combine the copyright protection with the content authentication commendably in the digital watermark, this paper proposes an improved error correction coding -based multipurpose method where the authentication watermark and the robust watermark are embedded in the different coefficients of DCT transform domain respectively. In addition, to strengthen the security, the method still utilizes the error correction coding. Through a series of experiment, the invisibility of the method can be proved both from the PSNR value (PSNR=51.2dB) and the histogram equalization. The similarity between the original watermark and extracted watermark is almost above 95%. The proposed method is effective in image authentication and it's robust against some image processing operations, such as low- pass filtering, Gaussian noise, JPEG lossy compression, cropping and histogram equalization.

Code design and assessment can be a computationally intensive task because of billions operations needed for code evaluation. Therefore, it is important that fast algorithms are devised for minimum distance. We propose a scalable variant of a known algorithm for exhaustive search of the minimum distance. The proposed algorithm is based on smart thread management in order to speed up the exhaustive search. The algorithm is particularly efficient when applied in combination with genetic algorithms for code design as a part of code evaluation and can be easily deployed on grid or cloud computing systems.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive multi-hop communication protocol based on transmission power control and error correction coding to achieve energy efficiency in wireless ad-hoc network. This study is important in extending battery lifetime and consequently the lifetime of nodes and the network. We consider multi-hop communication between pair of nodes where packet needs to be re-transmitted when transmission error or packet loss occurs. Based on the quality of the communication channel (bit error rate and bandwidth) and characteristics of the packet to be transmitted, we adaptively choose the most energy efficient transmission power level and error correction coding. Simulation shows that the proposed algorithm can save significant amount of energy, reduce packet loss rate and potentially the end-to-end packet delay.
