Algorithms for the decoding and errorcorrection of codes such as the Hamming and Golay codes are well established. They are generally implemented using either general purpose or dedicated microprocessor systems. Designers of such systems continually seek faster devices that retain flexibility and ease of use. As a consequence some researchers have proposed theoretical systems based on artificial neural network (ANN) architectures for the implementation of decoding algorithms. Motivated by the increasing demand for high quality, robust yet bandwidth efficient data and speech communications in the hostile mobile radio environment the authors embarked on the comparative study of a number of multilayer forward errorcorrection (FEC) and interleaving scenarios. The basic attributes of speech and data communication channels are entirely different. Speech transmission channels must not have long coding delays, but their bit error rates (BER) are allowed to be higher than those for data transmission. However, the higher data integrity required for data transmission can be achieved by deploying longer coding/interleaving delays, which are tolerated in this application. To limit the plurality of scenarios and system parameters to a manageable number we suppose an overall coding rate of one half. They postulate the memorylength of speech channels to be around 450 bits, while that of data channels to be around five times as long, i.e. 2500 bits.< >

The indoor radio channel provides the essential physical transmission medium for the implementation of radio LANs. We consider two alternative techniques for the mitigation of intersymbol interference due to multipath on indoor radio channels: the use of narrower signalling pulses (duty cycle less than 100%), and the use of FEC coding. Using the GWSSUS channel model, and assuming an exponential power-delay profile, the effect of intersymbol interference on the irreducible BER is calculated for both techniques, both for Rayleigh fading, and for a non-fading line-of-sight path. In the non-fading case, narrowing the signalling pulse is more effective than coding, but less robust in the presence of thermal noise, while in the fading case coding is more effective. The appropriate technique allows a maximum data rate, normalised to 1/(delay spread), of 0.62 in the non-fading case and 0.32 in Rayleigh fading, for irreducible BER 10/sup -6/.

Specifically, some of the high processing overhead algorithms from the North American IS54 cellular telephony standard are examined for an understanding of their functional requirements. The four algorithms, VSELP codebook search, VSELP 10 pole filter, FEC convolutional encoder and FEC Viterbi trellis decoder, are presented from an applications programmer's view, with discussion of algorithmic techniques and architectural requirements.< >

An automatic data rate adaptation is described for HF modems in degraded ionospheric propagation conditions by associating rate compatible punctured codes with a dedicated automatic repeat request procedure. Real transmission of data files with a 3 kHz high rate modem is up to 2.6 kb/s automatically accorded with the channel capacity. TCM codes may extend throughput up to 3.8 kb/s with the same ARQ procedure.< >
