SOME CODES FOR CORRECTING AND DETECTING UNIDIRECTIONAL BYTE errorS

Codes for correcting and detecting unidirectional byte errors are investigated. We derive the relations between distances and the error-correcting and -detecting capabilities of such codes. We show that a 2-fold unidirectional b-bit-byte error-correcting (2-UbEC) code requires at least three check bytes and that a 1-fold unidirectional b-bit-byte error-correcting/2-fold unidirectional b-bit-byte error-detecting (1-UbEC/2-UbED) code requires at least two check bytes. Construction methods for 2-UbEC codes with three check bytes and 1-UbEC/2-UbED codes with two check bytes are proposed.

A technique is presented for constructing (d, k) block codes capable of detecting single bit errors and single peak-shift errors in consecutive two runs. This constrains the runlengths in the code sequences to odd numbers. The capacities and the cardinalities for finite code length of these codes are described. A technique is also proposed for constructing (d, k) block codes capable of correcting single peak-shift errors.

Codes are considered for correction and detection of unidirectional byte errors. A code construction based on the generalized concatenated code construction is proposed. This construction gives a lot of efficient codes. For example, from this construction, a 72-input-bit encoder of the triple unidirectional 8-bit-byte error-correcting and four-fold unidirectional 8-bit-byte error-detecting code with a length of 112 bits and rate 9/14 are obtained, whereas the ordinary triple 8-bit-byte error-correcting and four-fold 8-bit-byte error-detecting code of the same length has only 56 information bits and is of rate 1/2. Further, the proposed construction is generalized to one that gives efficient short-length codes.

Runlength limited codes for single error-detection and single error-correction with mixed type errors

Runlength-limited (RLL) codes are used in magnetic recording. The error patterns that occur with peak detection magnetic recording systems when using a runlength-limited code consist of both symmetric errors and shift errors, We will refer to shift errors and symmetric errors collectively as mixed-type errors. In this correspondence, a method of providing error control for mixed-type errors that occur in a runlength-limited code comprised of(d, k) constrained sequences is examined. The coding scheme is to choose parity blocks to insert in the constrained information sequence. The parity blocks are chosen to satisfy the constraints and to provide some error control. The cases of single error detection and single error correction are investigated, where the single error is allowed to be a shift error or a symmetric error. Bounds are discussed on the possible lengths for the parity blocks. It is shown that the single error-detection codes are the best possible in terms of the length of the parity blocks.

Necessary conditions are given on the number of codewords in an [n,k] linear code and its dual for the probability of an undetected error to be upper bounded by 2-(n-k). It is shown that the triple-error-correcting primitive binary BCH codes of length 2(21) - 1, where l greater-than-or-equal-to 3, have probability of an undetected error greater than 2-(n-k).
