A lightweight push-pull mechanism for implicitly using signals in imperative programming

While signals can express time-varying values well, they heavily rely on the semantics of dataflow programming and functional programming. Several research have developed mechanisms for using signals with imperative object-oriented design and shown the benefits of its usage. However, they tend to introduce a class for signals, which thus results in the necessity of lifting up/down between variables and signals. We have already proposed an automation mechanism to expand event systems to support signals without introducing a class, and in this paper, we further extend it to a lightweight push-pull model by considering the direction of trigger. The push-pull automation mechanism allows programmers to choose between push and pull to declaratively express their intention and to reduce the overheads due to unnecessary propagation of value changes. To show the feasibility of our proposal, we implemented PuPPy as an extension to Python for helping programmers in declaring fields as signals. With PuPPy, programmers can use signals in Python without any event system and do not have to worry about the type of events and handlers. We evaluated PuPPy by running preliminary microbenchmarks and comparing with signal class libraries, pure event systems, and the implementation in our previous research.

Femtocell interference analysis based on the development of system-level LTE simulator

Although femtocell can confer various benefits to both operators and users, many technical issues, such as interference coordination, network synchronization, self-configuration, and self-optimization must be considered to effectively deploy femtocells in real environments. In this article, we develop a system-level simulator in order to evaluate performance of long-term evolution (LTE)-femtocell systems. The simulator consists of five functional modules which realize packet scheduling and call admission control functionalities and model various wireless channel effects, real and non-real time traffics, and user mobility. These modules are managed by operational modules that follow event-driven programming. In addition, the simulator adopts a graphical user interface (GUI) that facilitates configuration, management, and observation of simulations in real time. Based on the simulator, we analyze effects of signal interference between macro- and femtocells under four scenarios. From the results, we confirm that the developed LTE-femtocell simulator can effectively support performance evaluation and analysis on various femtocell deployment scenarios.

In this paper we describe a library we have developed that supports an "OO-from-the-beginning" approach to CS 1. The use of real graphics "objects" and event-driven programming are important components of our approach. The design of interactive graphical programs helps students to both use objects and write methods early while designing and implementing interesting programs.

The water quality analysis is important for human health and environmental protection. There are many physical and chemical methods for such analysis, with different accuracies, complexity and time consumption. Modern web applications are written in an event-driven style, in which event handlers execute asynchronously in response to user or system events. The nondeterminism arising from this programming style can lead to pernicious errors. Recent work focuses on detecting event races and classifying them as harmful or harmless. However, since modifying the source code to prevent harmful races can be a difficult and error-prone task, it may be preferable to steer away from the bad executions. In this paper, we present a technique for automated repair of event race errors in JavaScript web applications. Our approach relies on an event controller that restricts event handler scheduling in the browser according to a specified repair policy, by intercepting and carefully postponing or discarding selected events. We have implemented the technique in a tool called eventRaceCommander, which relies entirely on source code instrumentation, and evaluated it by repairing more than 100 event race errors that occur in the web applications from the largest 20 of the Fortune 500 companies. Our results show that applicationin-dependent repair policies usually suffice to repair event race errors without excessive negative impact on performance or user experience, though application-specific repair policies that target specific event races are sometimes desirable.

event-driven programming has become a major paradigm in developing concurrent, distributed systems. Its benefits are often informally captured by the key tenet of "decoupling", a notion which roughly captures the ability of modules to join and leave (or fail) applications dynamically, and to be developed by independent parties. programming models for event-driven programming either make it hard to reason about global control flow, thus hampering sound execution, or sacrifice decoupling to aid in reasoning about control flow. This work fills the gap by introducing a programming model - dubbed cooperative decoupled processes - that achieves both decoupling and reasoning about global control flow. We introduce this programming model through an event calculus, loosely inspired by the Join calculus, that enables reasoning about cooperative decoupled processes through the concepts of pre- and postconditions. A linear type system controls aliasing of events to ensure uniqueness of control flow and thus safe exchange of shared events. Fundamental properties of the type system such as subject reduction, migration safety, and progress are established.

Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) is often used between tiers in a Web-based system to automate the persistence of data to secondary storage. ORMs work by transparently providing developers with an object-oriented representation of some view of the tables in a database. Although the ORM approach is beneficial, it is not easy for a developer to integrate push-style development into object-relational model. In this project, we investigate an event-driven style of programming where developers could register for notification of updates to specific properties of ORM mapped objects. A key challenge in this context is maintaining consistency between the state of the objects of the ORM and the high-level event registration abstractions exposed to programmers. We use a running example from the RubiS web application benchmark example as evaluation to demonstrate the performance implications of the approach.

Network measurement is critical in network management such as performance monitoring, diagnosis, and traffic engineering. However, conventional network measurement software tools are inadequate in high-speed network at scale. They also lack an event-driven mechanism to automate complex network measurement process. In this paper, we present Edison which contains an high performance measurement backend (Ares) to collect flow metrics, driven with an expressive frontend (Equery) to enable the composition of complex measurement tasks. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of our Edison framework on a distributed measurement platform deployed for 100Gbps international research networks.

Distributed applications are evolving at a frantic pace, critically relying on each other to offer a host of new functionalities. The emergence of the service-oriented paradigm has made it possible to build complex applications as a set of self-contained and loosely coupled services that work altogether in concert. However, the traditional vision of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) based on web service specifications does not meet the trend of many major service providers. Instead, they promote microservices, a refinement of SOA focusing on lightweight communication mechanisms such as HTTP. Therefore, existing approaches for orchestrating the composition of various services become unusable in practice. In this paper, we introduce Medley, an event-driven lightweight platform for service composition. Medley is based on a domain-specific language for describing orchestration and a compiler that produces efficient code. We have used Medley to develop various compositions, involving a large number of existing services. Our evaluation shows that it scales both on a mainstream server and an embedded device while consuming a reasonable amount of resources.
