Context: evidence-based software engineering (EBSE) can be an effective resource to bridge the gap between academia and industry by balancing research of practical relevance and academic rigor. To achieve this, it seems necessary to investigate EBSE training and its benefits for the practice. Objective: We sought both to develop an EBSE training course for university students and to investigate what effects it has on the attitudes and behaviors of the trainees. Method: We conducted a longitudinal case study to study our EBSE course and its effects. For this, we collect data at the end of each EBSE course (2017, 2018, and 2019), and in two follow-up surveys (one after 7 months of finishing the last course, and a second after 21 months). Results: Our EBSE courses seem to have taught students adequately and consistently. Half of the respondents to the surveys report making use of the new skills from the course. The most-reported effects in both surveys indicated that EBSE concepts increase awareness of the value of research and evidence and EBSE methods improve information gathering skills. Conclusions: As suggested by research in other areas, training appears to play a key role in the adoption of evidence-based practice. Our results indicate that our training method provides an introduction to EBSE suitable for undergraduates. However, we believe it is necessary to continue investigating EBSE training and its impact on software engineering practice.

Training students in evidence-based software engineering and systematic reviews: a systematic review and empirical study

ContextAlthough influential in academia, evidence-based software engineering (EBSE) has had little impact on industry practice. We found that other disciplines have identified lack of training as a significant barrier to evidence-based *** build and assess an EBSE training proposal suitable for students with more than 3 years of computer science/software engineering university-level *** performed a systematic literature review (SLR) of EBSE teaching initiatives and used the SLR results to help us to develop and evaluate an EBSE training proposal. The course was based on the theory of learning outcomes and incorporated a large practical content related to performing an SLR. We ran the course with 10 students and based course evaluation on student performance and opinions of both students and teachers. We assessed knowledge of EBSE principles from the mid-term and final tests, as well as evaluating the SLRs produced by the student teams. We solicited student opinions about the course and its value via a student survey, a team survey, and a focus group. The teachers' viewpoint was collected in a debriefing *** SLR identified 14 relevant primary studies. The primary studies emphasized the importance of practical examples (usually based on the SLR process) and used a variety of evaluation methods, but lacked any formal education methodology. We identified 54 learning outcomes covering aspects of EBSE and the SLR method. All 10 students passed the course. Our course evaluation showed that a large percentage of the learning outcomes established for training were *** course proved suitable for students to understand the EBSE paradigm and to be able to apply it to a limited-scope practical assignment. Our learning outcomes, course structure, and course evaluation process should help to improve the effectiveness and comparability of future studies of EBSE training. Context: evidence-based practice (EBP) has allowed several disciplines to become more mature by emphasizing the use of evidence from well-designed and well-conducted research in decision-making. Its application in SE, evidence-based software engineering (EBSE) can help to bridge the gap between academia and industry by bringing together academic rigor and research of practical relevance. To achieve this, it seems necessary to improve its ***: We sought both to study the attitudes towards EBSE of stakeholders working in a government agency (GA) and to assess whether knowledge of EBSE would impact their working practices. Method: We conducted a multi-stage field investigation in an Uruguayan national GA that is responsible for digital policies. First, we organized an EBSE awareness lecture and we collected and analyzed participants' perceptions of the value and limitations of EBSE. Sixteen months later, in a second stage, we contacted the agency and asked participants whether they had made use of the information about EBSE we presented to ***: Initially, participants reported that EBSE seemed useful for tackling challenging problems and, in particular, considered its use appropriate given the agency's responsibilities. Perceived barriers to EBSE adoption were the need for institutional support, the lack of government practice reports, inadequate skills or motivation, the cost of conducting systematic reviews, and the lack of evidence about emerging issues. In the follow-up survey, although the participants were not undertaking systematic reviews themselves, many reported improvements in how they searched for and evaluated information to support their ***: Our study presents some insights to better understand EBSE adoption. The International Conference on Evaluation and Assessment in software engineering (EASE) had its twentieth anniversary in 2016, with that year's edition hosted in Limerick, Ireland. Founded in 1997, the EASE conference was the first event solely dedicated to encouraging empirical research in software engineering, and its founders have been longtime advocates of evidence-based software engineering (EBSE). In this editorial, we briefly look back at the history of EBSE and the EASE conference. We then introduce the four articles which are revised and extended versions of papers presented at EASE 2016. We conclude by looking at the future of EBSE, and provide some suggestions for conducting and reporting empirical research. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Context: Both scientific publications and grey literature have widely been employed as sources of empirical evidence in evidence-based software engineering (EBSE). However, there is still a fierce debate about whether or not the pervasive Web content can act as an alternative means to gather evidence for EBSE. Aim: To help ourselves enter this debate, this work aims to obtain some pre-evidence of reviewing Web documents for verifying the value and reliability of online materials. Method: Given the unique characteristics of Web content, we adapted the traditional Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology in EBSE, and conducted a review case study in the deep learning domain. Results: Our study selected four different search sources and captured 5082 "deep learning"-relevant Web documents. After a set of thematic synthesis steps ranging from keyword identification to brainstorming, the collected raw data were eventually evolved into a mind map of six semantic topics. Conclusions: We confirm that Web content can provide valuable information as supplementary evidence in EBSE. However, reviewing Web content introduces more search source bias rather than academic publications' location bias that is due to factors like ease of access or indexing levels in digital libraries.

Context: The Internet of Things (IoT) has brought expectations for software inclusion in everyday objects. However, it has challenges and requires multidisciplinary technical knowledge involving different areas that should be combined to enable IoT software systems ***: To present an evidence-based roadmap for IoT development to support developers in specifying, designing, and implementing IoT ***: An iterative approach based on experimental studies to acquire evidence to define the IoT Roadmap. Next, the Systems engineering Body of Knowledge life cycle was used to organize the roadmap and set temporal dimensions for IoT software systems ***: The studies revealed seven IoT Facets influencing IoT development. The IoT Roadmap com-prises 117 items organized into 29 categories representing different concerns for each Facet. In addition, an experimental study was conducted observing a real case of a healthcare IoT project, indicating the roadmap ***: The IoT Roadmap can be a feasible instrument to assist IoT software systems engineering because it can (a) support researchers and practitioners in understanding and characterizing the IoT and (b) provide a checklist to identify the applicable recommendations for engineering IoT software systems.(c) 2023 Elsevier Inc. Context: Following on other scientific disciplines, such as health sciences, the use of Grey Literature (GL) has become widespread in software engineering (SE) research. Whilst the number of papers incorporating GL in SE is increasing, there is little empirically known about different aspects of the use of GL in SE research. Method: We used a mixed-methods approach for this research. We carried out a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of the use of GL in SE, and surveyed the authors of the selected papers included in the SLR (as GL users) and the invited experts in SE community on the use of GL in SE research. Results: We systematically selected and reviewed 102 SE secondary studies that incorporate GL in SE research, from which we identified two groups based on their reporting: 1) 76 reviews only claim their use of GL;2) 26 reviews report the results by including GL. We also obtained 20 replies from the GL users and 24 replies from the invited SE experts. Conclusion: There is no common understanding of the meaning of GL in SE. Researchers define the scopes and the definitions of GL in a variety of ways. We found five main reasons of using GL in SE research. The findings have enabled us to propose a conceptual model for how GL works in SE research lifecycle. There is an apparent need for research to develop guidelines for using GL in SE and for assessing quality of GL. The current work can provide a panorama of the state-of-the-art of using GL in SE for the follow-up research, as to determine the important position of GL in SE research.

Analyzing an automotive testing process with evidence-based software engineering

Context: evidence-based software engineering (EBSE) provides a process for solving practical problems based on a rigorous research approach. The primary focus so far was on mapping and aggregating evidence through systematic reviews. Objectives: We extend existing work on evidence-based software engineering by using the EBSE process in an industrial case to help an organization to improve its automotive testing process. With this we contribute in (1) providing experiences on using evidence based processes to analyze a real world automotive test process and (2) provide evidence of challenges and related solutions for automotive software testing processes. Methods: In this study we perform an in-depth investigation of an automotive test process using an extended EBSE process including case study research (gain an understanding of practical questions to define a research scope), systematic literature review (identify solutions through systematic literature), and value stream mapping (map out an improved automotive test process based on the current situation and improvement suggestions identified). These are followed by reflections on the EBSE process used. Results: In the first step of the EBSE process we identified 10 challenge areas with a total of 26 individual challenges. For 15 out of those 26 challenges our domain specific systematic literature review identified solutions. based on the input from the challenges and the solutions, we created a value stream map of the current and future process. Conclusions: Overall, we found that the evidence-based process as presented in this study helps in technology transfer of research results to industry, but at the same time some challenges lie ahead (e.g. koping systematic reviews to focus more on concrete industry problems, and understanding strategies of conducting EBSE with respect to effort and quality of the evidence). The present study aimed to merge expertise from evidence-based practice and user-centered design to develop a rating scale for considering user input and other sources of information about end-users in studies reporting on the design of technology-based support for autism. We conducted a systematic review of the relevant literature to test the reliability and validity of the scale. The scale demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity based on a randomized sample of 211 studies extracted from the output of the systematic review. The scale can help provide a more complete assessment of the quality of the design process of technology-based supports for autism and be beneficial to autistic people, their families, and related professionals in making informed decisions regarding such supports.

SEGRESS: software engineering Guidelines for REporting Secondary Studies

Context: Several tertiary studies have criticized the reporting of software engineering secondary studies. Objective: Our objective is to identify guidelines for reporting software engineering (SE) secondary studies which would address problems observed in the reporting of software engineering systematic reviews (SRs). Method: We review the criticisms of SE secondary studies and identify the major areas of concern. We assess the PRISMA 2020 (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement as a possible solution to the need for SR reporting guidelines, based on its status as the reporting guideline recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration whose SR guidelines were a major input to the guidelines developed for SE. We report its advantages and limitations in the context of SE secondary studies. We also assess reporting guidelines for mapping studies and qualitative reviews, and compare their structure and content with that of PRISMA 2020. Results: Previous tertiary studies confirm that reports of secondary studies are of variable quality. However, ad hoc recommendations that amend reporting standards may result in unnecessary duplication of text. We confirm that the PRISMA 2020 statement addresses SE reporting problems, but is mainly oriented to quantitative reviews, mixed-methods reviews and meta-analyses. However, we show that the PRISMA 2020 item definitions can be extended to cover the information needed to report mapping studies and qualitative reviews. Conclusions: In this paper and its Supplementary Material, we present and illustrate an integrated set of guidelines called SEGRESS (software engineering Guidelines for REporting Secondary Studies), suitable for quantitative systematic reviews (building upon PRISMA 2020), mapping studies (PRISMA-ScR), and qualitative reviews (ENTREQ and RAMESES), that addresses reporting problems found in current SE SRs.
