Tracing the spatial-temporal evolution dynamics of air traffic systems using graph theories

Air traffic systems are of great significance to our society. However, air traffic systems are extremely complicated since an air traffic system encompasses many components which could evolve over time. It is therefore challenging to analyze the evolution dynamics of air traffic systems. In this paper we propose a graph perspective to trace the spatial-temporal evolutions of air traffic systems. Different to existing studies which are model-driven and only focus on certain properties of an air traffic system, in this paper we propose a data-driven perspective and analyze a couple of properties of an air traffic system. Specifically, we model air traffic systems with both unweighted and weighted graphs with respect to real-world traffic data. We then analyze the evolution dynamics of the constructed graphs in terms of nodal degrees, degree distributions, traffic delays, causality between graph structures and traffic delays, and system resilience under airport failures. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a case study on the American air traffic systems with respect to 12-month traffic data is carried out. It is found that the structures and traffic mobilities of the American air traffic systems do not evolve significantly over time, which leads to the stable distributions of the traffic delays as evidenced by a causality analysis. It is further found that the American air traffic systems are quite robust to random airport failures while, respectively, 20% and 10% failures of the hub airports will lead to the collapse of the entire system with respect to the two proposed cascading failure models.

Explicit simulations of protein evolution, where protein chains are described at a molecular, although simplified, level provide important information to understand the similarities found to exist between known proteins. The results of such simulations suggest that a number of evolutionary-related quantities, such as the distribution of sequence similarity for structurally similar proteins, are controlled by evolutionary kinetics and do not reflect an equilibrium state. An important result for phylogeny is that a subset of the residues of each protein evolve on a much larger time scale than the other residues. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Each stage of the construction of the rail transit network has unique dynamic characteristics. It can provide recommendations for rail transit network planning and phased construction by evaluating the degree of evolution of the urban rail transit network and dividing the evolution stages precisely. Starting from the allometric growth relationship between transfer nodes and ordinary nodes in the urban rail transit network, this paper defines the evolution level of the rail transit network and the growth rate difference between transfer nodes and ordinary nodes and deduces the dynamic logistic equation of URT network evolution level using the mathematical derivative and logarithmic relationship. This paper reveals the dynamic law of the evolution process of the urban rail transit network at a theoretical level, analyzes the dynamic evolution process on this basis, determines the threshold for phasing the evolution stage, and divides it into four evolution stages. Finally, the results of the theoretical derivation are validated by the evolution data of the Beijing Rail Transit Network (1984-2020) over 45 years. The verification results are substantially congruent with the conclusions of the theoretical derivation, demonstrating the accuracy of the theoretical model and its practical usefulness in directing the building of the rail transit network.

A backdoor attack in deep learning inserts a hidden backdoor in the model to trigger malicious behavior upon specific input patterns. Existing detection approaches assume a metric space (for either the original inputs or their latent representations) in which normal samples and malicious samples are separable. We show that this assumption has a severe limitation by introducing a novel SSDT (Source-Specific and Dynamic-Triggers) backdoor, which obscures the difference between normal samples and malicious samples. To overcome this limitation, we move beyond looking for a perfect metric space that would work for different deep-learning models, and instead resort to more robust topological constructs. We propose TED (Topological evolution dynamics) as a model-agnostic basis for robust backdoor detection. The main idea of TED is to view a deep-learning model as a dynamical system that evolves inputs to outputs. In such a dynamical system, a benign input follows a natural evolution trajectory similar to other benign inputs. In contrast, a malicious sample displays a distinct trajectory, since it starts close to benign samples but eventually shifts towards the neighborhood of attacker-specified target samples to activate the backdoor. Extensive evaluations are conducted on vision and natural language datasets across different network architectures. The results demonstrate that TED not only achieves a high detection rate, but also significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art detection approaches, particularly in addressing the sophisticated SSDT attack. The code to reproduce the results is made public on GitHub.

Molecular characterization and evolution dynamics of influenza B viruses circulating in Germany from season 1996/1997 to 2019/2020

Influenza B viruses are responsible for significant disease burden caused by viruses of both the Yamagata- and Victoria-lineage. Since the circulating patterns of influenza B viruses in different countries vary we investigated molecular properties and evolution dynamics of influenza B viruses circulating in Germany between 1996 and 2020. A change of the dominant lineage occurred in Germany in seven seasons in over past 25 years. A total of 676 sequences of hemagglutinin coding domain 1 (HA1) and 516 sequences of neuraminidase (NA) genes of Yamagata- and Victoria-lineage viruses were analyzed using time-scaled phylogenetic tree. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that Yamagata-lineage viruses are more diverse than the Victoria-lineage viruses and could be divided into nine genetic groups whereas Victoria-lineage viruses presented six genetic groups. Comparative phylogenetic analyses of both the HA and NA segments together revealed a number of inter-lineage as well as inter- and intra-clade reassortants. We identified key amino acid substitutions in major HA epitopes such as in four antigenic sites and receptor-binding sites (RBS) and in the regions close to them, with most substitutions in the 120-loop of both lineage viruses. Altogether, seventeen substitutions were fixed over time within the Yamagata-lineage with twelve of them in the antigenic sites. Thirteen substitutions were identified within the Victoria-lineage, with eleven of them in the antigenic sites. Moreover, all Victoria-lineage viruses of the 2017/2018 season were characterized by a deletion of two amino acids at the position 162-163 in the antigenic site of HA1. The viruses with triple deletion Delta 162-164 were found in Germany since season 2018/2019. We highlighted the interplay between substitutions in the glycosylation sites and RBS and antigenic epitope during HA evolution. Exploring the coevolution dynamics of residents and recyclers in electric vehicle battery recycling decisions on the two-layer heterogeneous complex networks

China is exploring and implementing policies to promote the recycling of electric vehicle batteries. Few studies have investigated the coevolution between residents and recyclers in the recycling system. This study employs agent-based modeling and network-based evolutionary game theory to develop a model based on a two-layer heterogeneous social network. This model captures the complex interactions between residents and recyclers, analyzing the impact of various policies on these coevolutionary systems. Our results reveal that resident- oriented subsidies can increase the formal recycling strategy diffusion rate to 99.8 %, while indirectly raising the proportion of formal recyclers to 85.1 %. The evolutionary patterns of formal recycling strategy in both resident and recycler networks follow similar trends, requiring prolonged social interaction and iteration to reach equilibrium. Additionally, the marginal diminishing effect of subsidies highlights the potential for policy redundancy compared to regulatory measures. Policy effects are transmitted across agent types through coevolution and information dissemination, although information distortion may impair transmission efficacy. Moreover, formal recycling strategies receive a greater boost in the quantity subsidy model, while capacity subsidies incentivize higher levels of recycling diffusion in the system. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the policy-driven co-evolutionary dynamics in the electric vehicle battery recycling system.

To elucidate the multi-physical phenomena of gas explosion in urban underground drainage pipelines, including fluid flow, temperature, and overpressure, a numerical model considering the manhole burial depth ratio (alpha = 0.5-2) and continuous phase water was established. Simulation studies were conducted to investigate the twophase gas-liquid explosion propagation in urban underground drainage pipelines. The research findings indicate that within the pipeline space, influenced by water phase oscillation and the pressure partitioning effect of manholes, there are complex and fluctuating patterns observed in the maximum wind speed, maximum flame temperature, and maximum explosion overpressure along the pipeline. The variation in the manhole burial depth ratio does not significantly alter the dynamic parameters of explosion propagation. The maximum explosion flow velocity remains within the range of 402.58-445.37 m/s, the maximum flame temperature maintains between 2928.72 and 3021.52 K, and the maximum explosion overpressure remains within the range of 847.64-859.82 kPa. The continuous-phase water flow in a horizontal pipeline, after being subjected to shock wave oscillations, forms a fine water column and discrete water droplets, thereby reducing the average temperature of the surrounding high-temperature gas.

In the present study, a comprehensive analysis of the arginase gene family in metazoans was performed. A total of 126 arginase genes have been identified in 44 species. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that arginase genes consist of four groups. Conservative and divergent gene structures are found among the groups. The syntenies also exist in distantly related genomes among multiple species. Adaptive evolution shows that, while purifying selection may have been the main force driving the evolution of the arginases, some of critical sites responsible for the functional divergence may have been under positive selection. Overall, the data obtained from our investigation contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of the arginase gene family and of the function and evolution of this family in metazoans.
