The crude oil preheating process in refineries is required to be scheduled in a way to minimize the processing cost involved with it, subject to the satisfaction of various process related constraints. The process forms a mixed-integer optimization problem as the scheduling of the processing units involves binary variables, while the discharges from the running units are real valued. The two parts of such problems are usually handled by two different algorithms, where the optimum scheduling obtained by one algorithm is fed to another algorithm for optimizing its discharge process. In the present work, formulating the crude oil preheating process under the effect of linear fouling as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model, three binary-real coded evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are investigated in order to demonstrate that a single EA can successfully tackle its both binary and real parts. Further, the statistical analysis of the performances of the EAs are also presented through their application to a benchmark instance of the problem.

Management and analyses of water resources is of paramount importance in the implementation of water related sustainable development goals. Hydraulic models are key in flood forecasting and simulation applied to a river flood analysis and risk prediction and an accurate estimation of the roughness is one of the main factors in predicting the discharge in a stream. In practical implementation roughness can be represented by the prediction of the well known Manning's coefficient necessary for discharge calculation. In this paper we design an objective function that measures the quality of a given configuration of the Manning's coefficient. Such an objective function is optimised through several evolutionary approaches, namely: (1+1)-ES, CMA-ES, Differential Evolution, Particle Swarm Optimization and Bayesian Optimization. As case of study, a river in the central Italy was considered. The results indicate that the model, consistent with the classical techniques adopted in the hydraulic engineering field, is applicable to natural rivers and is able to provide an estimation of the roughness coefficients with a satisfactory accuracy. A comparison of the performances of the five evolutionary algorithms is also proposed.

This paper considers the problem of scheduling part families and jobs within each part family in a flowshop manufacturing cell with sequence dependent family setups times where it is desired to minimize the makespan while processing parts (jobs) in each family together. Two evolutionary algorithms-a Genetic Algorithm and a Memetic Algorithm with local search-are proposed and empirically evaluated as to their effectiveness in finding optimal permutation schedules. The proposed algorithms use a compact representation for the solution and a hierarchically structured population where the number of possible neighborhoods is limited by dividing the population into clusters. In comparison to a Multi-Start procedure, solutions obtained by the proposed evolutionary algorithms were very close to the lower bounds for all problem instances. Moreover, the comparison against the previous best algorithm, a heuristic named CMD, indicated a considerable performance improvement. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The designed shield consists of an array of elements that represent conductive or non-conductive parts. The expected output is to design a shield with sufficient balance between shielding effectiveness and transparency in systems that need an optical line of sight. The wide frequency transparent shielding design is a complex task that researchers so far mostly solved by composite polymers. The authors use a different approach using traditional conductive material and element folding technology.
