The evolutionary architecture supports software systems to make small functional changes frequently and reliably. With fitness functions defined, we can ensure that the architectural goals are met as the system evolves. However, some functionality changes cause architectural changes, which impact a large part of the software system. Therefore, we aim at ensuring that changes in the architectural design do not impact the existing functionalities, while new functionalities are incorporated into the new design. This paper proposes an approach to automate architectural design refactoring that supports changes in functionalities. Our approach applies formal modeling and verification to refactor and verify the evolution process of software systems. The proposed algorithms help to automatically refactor the design by referencing the given architecture design. With our appproach, the evolution process can be planned and formally verified to guarantee that the system can evolve safely to support functionality changes. We evaluated our approach with four real-world systems. The results show the effectiveness of our refactoring approach to support new functional properties.

Software systems often evolve over time due to frequent changes in user requirements. The refactoring of the architectural design due to numerous functional changes significantly impacts the software system. evolutionary architecture is a design principle that supports the implementation of frequent changes. One key aspect of an evolutionary architecture is the definition of fitness functions to ensure that the changes align with the intended goals. However, planning the incremental evolution of the architectural design remains a challenge. This paper presents an approach to automatically generate evolution plans for refactoring the architectural design in support of new functionalities. Formal modelling has been applied to allow for the verification of functional properties against the design. By utilising the generated evolution plan, we can determine a safe path for evolving the software system with minimal risk of failure. We evaluated the rigour and effectiveness of the evolution plan generated by our approach for six software systems. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in generating evolution plans. Additionally, we were able to identify the most suitable planning strategy that minimises system interruptions in the generated evolution plan. & COPY;2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Software architecture revolution is the extensive and profound transformation of a software system’s fundamental structures. It aims to enhance attributes such as scalability, availability, and maintainability or to enable the implementation of new requirements incompatible with the system’s current capabilities. Undertaking an architectural revolution requires significant organizational effort and commitment, and effective leadership is crucial for its success. Despite the extensive research available on the technical aspects of architectural transformations, few studies focus on the leadership perspective. Leaders play a crucial role in championing the revolution initiative, prioritizing activities, negotiating resource allocation, evaluating outcomes, implementing corrective measures, and reporting accomplishments. This article builds up on our previous work and presents practical insights to describe effective strategic prioritization patterns for enhancing the effectiveness of architectural revolution initiatives.

Software architecture revolution can be defined as the process of making profound, large-scale changes to the fundamental structures of a software system to improve its attributes, such as availability, scalability, and maintainability, or to enable new requirements that are incompatible with the current capabilities. Architectural revolution usually demands substantial effort from the organization and thus depends on effective leadership to be successful. However, while there is plenty of research on the technical aspects of any architectural transformation, not much is available on the leadership perspective. The role of managers and other leaders include championing the revolution initiative, prioritizing activities, negotiating the allocation of people and resources, evaluating results, taking corrective actions, and reporting achievements. This paper draws from practical experiences to describe patterns to improve the effectiveness of architectural revolution initiatives.

Martin Fowler coined the term "Strangler Application" as a metaphor to describe a way of doing an evolutionary rewrite of a system, keeping it working while you evolve it. The main idea is to gradually create a new system around the edges of the old, letting it grow slowly over several years until the old system is strangled. The microservices architecture style has become very popular, and has been used to apply the strangler application to monolithic service-based systems. This paper describes different strategies (patterns) for applying the strangler application while evolving a monolith to use the microservices architecture style. The main ideas are: Wrap the monolith and protect services and system from change, Start Small and gradually evolve the system (baby steps), Pave the Road making microservices easier to create; Macroservice first then split to Microservice, Add new functionality as microservices, Extract Module / Component to Microservice, and Replace functionality with Microservice. As the system evolve it is common to Proxy Monolith Components and Add Façade to the microservices

One of the main features of most Web applications today is their great dynamism. They are undoubtedly characterized by a continuous evolution. After implementing and performing the first deployment of a Web application, some new requirements are bound to arise, which involve the need to incorporate new functionalities, generally unknown during the design stage. This type of functionalities, which arise as a response to unexpected requirements of the business layer, have the peculiarity that they eventually need to be removed due to the expiration of their commercial value. The continuous incorporation and removal of these functionalities, which we will call "volatile functionalities", usually has a negative impact on some important aspects of the Web application. Volatile Functionality meta-framework is a conceptual framework that permits to support the lifespan of volatile functionalities in Web applications. We have developed diverse techniques enabling full support of volatile functionalities for enterprise application. Moreover, we have performed an evaluation for assessing developers' experience and solutions' performance.

Science gateways are more than user interfaces to computational grids and clouds. Gateways are middleware in their own right, providing flexible, lightweight federations of heterogenous collections of computing resources (such as campus clusters, supercomputers, computational clouds), all of which remain challenges for many alternative middleware approaches. Gateways also are notable for providing science application-centric interfaces to computing resources rather than resource-centric views. An important challenge for science gateway research is to generalize specific science gateway strategies, defining a reference architecture that emcompasses major gateway capabilities while enabling implementation flexibility. Such a reference architecture should also enable "platform as a service" approaches that provide hosted versions of common gateway capabilities. In this paper, we summarize the Apache Airavata software system as a candidate reference architecture for science gateways. We propose the use of a component-based architecture to encompass major gateway capabilities (such as metadata management, meta-scheduling, execution management, and messaging). We examine the messaging system component in this abstract architecture in detail and describe its reimplementation and validation using third party messaging system software to replace a custom-built messaging system. Besides the operational validation of this specific component, we infer a preliminary validation of the overall architecture. The flexibility of component implementations within an overall architecture is essential as it allows gateway middleware to be the subject of distributed computing research for its own sake while also ensuring that we don't get locked into less than optimal implementations for gateway operations. This paper aims at investigating the advantages of using an interval type-2 fuzzy system for classification problems. An evolutionary architecture was proposed to generate the rule base and to optimize the membership functions of a type-2 Fuzzy Classification System. The proposed architecture is composed of three stages. In the first stage of the architecture, a Genetic Algorithm generates the rule base of the Fuzzy Classification System using predefined and fixed membership functions. In the second stage, another Genetic Algorithm optimizes the interval type-2 membership functions that were used in the first stage. Finally, a third Genetic Algorithm is used for the optimization of the number of rules in the best Fuzzy Classification System generated in the two previous stages. Some experiments have been run using different datasets from the UCI Machine Learning Repository in order to validate the proposed approach and to compare the results with the ones obtained with the Wang&Mendel method and a type-1 fuzzy classification system also generated by the evolutionary architecture proposed here. The results demonstrated that the type-2 fuzzy classification system performed better than the other classifiers used in the study.

Network Enabled Capability (NEC) is the U.K. Ministry of Defence's response to the quickly changing conflict environment in which its forces must operate. In NEC, systems need to be integrated in context, to assist in human activity and provide dependable inter-operation. In order to provide reliable and sustainable military capability, fast paced changes must be conducted without halting the operation of a capability. In this paper we present the concept of evolutionary service-oriented architecture for delivering sustainable capability. The reliability of the architecture is evaluated by simulations using a computer-based model. The simulation results indicate that the evolutionary service-oriented architecture can provide higher reliability and sustainability in the provision of capability in a dynamic environment.
