Passenger terminals are very complex buildings not only in their function, form and structure but also in infrastructure, security, comfort, energy, which deal with huge investments, both in terms of capital, as well as in terms of resources and environmental impact. As such, it is expected that they are designed to fulfill their purpose while minimizing their negative aspects to the environment. Identifying design solutions that satisfy these goals is a challenging task due to the complexity involved. The design task is characterized by excessive number of solutions, conflicting goals and complex relations between design decision variables, objectives and constraints. As such, appropriate, informed decisions, that integrate as many design aspects as possible, should be ensured as early as the conceptual stage of the design. In this study, the problem of conceptual airport terminal design is addressed by means of computational decision support methodologies. The proposed method is based on the integration of the following components: i. a parametric modeling approach, for enabling the instantaneous generation of a wide variety of designs, ii. a multi-faceted evaluation scheme, which integrates functional, energy and architectural aspects, iii. a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm, namely the NSGA-II, to identify well performing solutions. A computational model implementing the method is outlined, and validation of the method is performed, based on two different scenarios, corresponding to commonly occurring airport configurations. The performance of two optimization runs with different population sizes, as well as qualitative aspects of the resulting solutions is discussed.

An implementation of multi-objective optimization for design of an office room is presented through maximizing illuminance value and minimizing cooling energy consumption on a summer extreme day in a Mediterranean hot climate region. Existing literature shows different examples of multi-objective optimization problems in the field of performance-based building design. Principally, performance criteria such as energy and daylight should be integrated in the early stage of the conceptual design phase to provide energy-efficient solutions in buildings. Since most of the architectural design problems are difficult to solve, multi-objective optimization methods provide many design solutions to the decision makers. We used Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II namely NSGA-II to present many design alternatives by satisfying two conflicting objectives at the same time in the presented office room problem.

Image registration is a fundamental task in computer vision. Over the last decades, it has been applied to a broad range of situations from remote sensing to medical imaging, artificial vision, and CAD systems. In the last few years, there is an increasing interest in the application of the evolutionary computation paradigm to this task in order to solve the ever recurrent drawbacks of classical image registration methods. In this work, we will perform an experimental study on the performance of the most relevant evolutionary image registration :methods proposed to date tackling a challenging real-world problem named 3D model reconstruction using laser range scanners. Specifically, we will make use of image datasets of human skulls provided by the Physical Anthropology Lab of the University of Granada, Spain.

Color is a powerful tool to describe and interpret information from an image. Colors can be stored in an array called color palette. In the world of product design, palettes are mostly used to inspire creativeness and Interactive Genetic Algorithm has been widely increased to develop wide creativity solutions and generate new ideas for colors. When it comes to the choice of colors, the users do not normally have a clear idea about it. What users can do is use the color palette that is available as the standard palette and produce a color combination of their own choice. Thereafter, from the creation of a new palette, impression words also be shown to the user appeared to represent matching ideas or feelings from the user about the new palette. The aim of this research is to achieve user satisfaction of color palette and try to assist in the selection process by directing the process of optimizing the color combination. This solution can improve the interface designs in term of enhancing human perception skill.

A user's attention in interactive evolutionary computation(IEC) is an important issue. The methods to learn the user's attention knowledge in IEC are studied in this paper. Firstly, the definition of the user's attention is given. Secondly, the user's attention on gene sense unit and some related theorems are given. Based on these theorems, the methods to learn the user's attention knowledge are presented. Thirdly, a new method to improve the performance of IEC based on the user's attention knowledge is given. The experiments validate the efficiency of the methods. The study on the user's attention in IEC establishes a necessary foundation for reducing users' fatigue in IEC.

This paper aims to present and evaluate a software that uses an evolutionary strategy to design weekly nutritional menus for School Feeding. The software ensures the nutritional needs of students and also minimizes the total cost of the menu. We based our nutritional needs on the Brazilian National School Feeding Programme (PNAE). This program takes into account: (i) the age of the student;(ii) some preparations issues as color, consistency and, variety;and also (iii) the maximum amount to be paid per meal. Our software generates, in less than five minutes, a set of menus, and the nutritionist can choose the menu that suits his/her best. We evaluate our algorithm using the Weighted-Sum approach, and our results show that the obtained 5-days menus using the proposed methodology not only comply with the restrictions imposed by the authorities but also produce inexpensive and healthy menus. We also appraise the software itself using an opinion pool among nine nutritionists. The professionals considered our software above expectations.

A multi-objective genetic algorithm is applied to the problem of identifying genes associated with Alzheimer's disease. The input to the genetic algorithm is a set of centrality measures obtained by merging various biological evidence types into a complex network, based on a set of 11 genes already known to be associated with this disease. In terms of leave-one-out validation, the strongest results are obtained using betweenness, with ranking showing that better results are sometimes obtained by including either stress or load with betweenness. The overall ranking of the genes across all runs is examined and suggests some genes worthy of further study with respect to their link to this disease. The methodology is also evaluated with respect to robustness by modifying the original network by a range of percentages, and applying the methodology to these variations. The results show that the methodology returns very similar results under these circumstances.

The basic aim of this paper is to present a broad picture of Big Data and to show how information can be retrieved using different methodologies and especially using evolutionary computation techniques that help in the information retrieval process in a better way compared to traditional retrieval techniques. Big data is considered as a collection of large data which are heterogeneous in nature and cannot be handled by traditional computing techniques and require more advanced statistical procedures to extract relevant information from a voluminous pool of data. This paper also covers some of the basic information retrieval models which are used and present a basic outline of evolutionary computation techniques.

The use of low-cost multi-core processors that target small-scale parallelism of several or several tens of processing units has recently spread to general-purpose personal computers. As part of this trend, research on converting evolutionary computation to parallel processing on multi-core processors has begun. In our research, we place importance on proposing multi-core processor architectures from the viewpoint of evolutionary computation and on proposing indices for identifying chips that exhibit high affinity with evolutionary computation from among existing multi-core processors. This paper takes a first step in this direction by focusing on local memory built into a multi-core processor and proposing a specification that allows the contents of local memory in any core to be directly accessed by any other core without using main memory. We describe a desktop comparison with single-core processors and general multi-core processors and show that a speed-up effect should be expected with the proposed specification for both fine-grain and coarse-grained parallelization techniques. We also describe an evaluation on actual multi-core processor for the case of fine-grain parallelization and show that the speed-up effect is also useful in reducing energy consumption.
