A review of recent evolutionary computation-based techniques in wind turbines layout optimization problems

This paper presents a mini- review of the main works recently published about optimal wind turbines layout in wind farms. Specifically, we focus on discussing articles where evolutionary computation techniques have been applied, since this computational framework has obtained very good results in different formulations of the problem. A summary of the main concepts needed to face the problem are also included in the article, such as a basic wake model and several cost models and objective functions previously used in the literature. This review includes works published in the most significant journals and international conferences, and it gives a brief remark of the optimization models proposed and the implemented algorithms, so it can be useful for readers who want to be quickly introduced in this research area.

Optimization of network planning by the novel hybrid algorithms of intelligent optimization techniques

This paper proposes a new hybrid algorithm Meta-heuristic for the problem of network planning systems. The main goal of this paper is, to develop an efficient optimization tool which will minimise the cost functions of the stated optimization problems in network planning systems. The following are the objectives of the research: to investigate the capabilities of genetic algorithm, simulated annealing and tabu search for the defined optimization tasks;to develop a hybrid optimization algorithm which will produce improved iterations compared to those found by GA, SA, and TS algorithms. The performance of the hybrid algorithm is illustrated and six hybrid algorithms are developed, to improve the iterations obtained. The cost function of this problem consists of the capital investment cost in discrete form, the cost of transmission losses and the power generation costs. It is advantageous to use exact DC load flow constraint equations based on the modified form of Kirchhoff's Second Law because the iterative process for line addition is not required. Hence, the computation time is decreased. Finally, the hybrid VI shows to be a very good option for network planning systems given that it obtains much accentuated reductions of iteration, which is very important for network planning. Determining generator contributions to transmission system using parallel vector evaluated particle swarm optimization

In this paper, the generator contributions to the transmission system are determined by an evolutionary computation technique. Evaluating the contributions of generators to the power flows in transmission lines is formulated as a multiobjective optimization problem and calculated using a parallel vector evaluated particle swarm optimization (VEPSO) algorithm. Specifically, the contributions are modeled by particles of swarms whose positions are optimally determined while satisfying all multiobjectives and other physical and operating constraints. The VEPSO method is parallelized by distributing the swarms in a number of networked PCs. The proposed parallel VEPSO algorithm accounts for nonlinear characteristics of the generators and transmission lines. The applicability of the proposed parallel VEPSO algorithm in accessing the generator contributions is demonstrated and compared with analytical methods for four different systems: three-bus, six-bus, IEEE 30-bus, and 136-bus test systems. The experimental results show that the proposed parallel VEPSO algorithm is capable of obtaining precise solutions compared to analvtical methods while considering nonlinear characteristics of the systems.

This paper proposes optimal operation planning of energy plants by modified brain storm optimization (MBSO) The problem can be formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem and various evolutionary computation techniques such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), and differential evolutionary PSO (DEEPSO) have been applied so far. This paper applies recently developed MBSO for optimal operational planning of energy plants in order to improve solution quality. The proposed MBSO based method is compared with the conventional PSO and DEEPSO based methods, and the original BSO based method. It is verified that total energy cost by the proposed method is lower than those by all the comparative methods for a typical energy plant. © 2018

Identifying the novel natural antioxidants by coupling different feature selection methods with nonlinear regressions and gas chromatography mass spectroscopy

There are numerous reactive compounds such as free radicals which the body is less capable of fighting off these unwanted dangerous molecules. These conditions, known as oxidative stress, reflect an imbalance between free radical generation and the ability of the body to neutralize these reactive intermediates by antioxidants. Some spices show antioxidant activities that provide an added source of antioxidants for the body to fight against free radicals. Without the necessary intake of these plants, free radicals can lead to various types of diseases. However, the contribution of each chemical composition in the antioxidant activity is unclear. To produce effective food supplements as well as pharmaceutical formulations from these herbs, the responsible components for the antioxidant activity should be identified. Nowadays, the integration of chemoinformatics methods with chromatographic techniques allows us to identify and predict the antioxidant activity of medicinal plants. This study presents a new drug discovery strategy for the quantitative chemical component-antioxidant activity relationship (QCAR) model. This strategy includes multi-objective feature selection (FS) algorithms based on artificial neural network (ANN) to identify novel antioxidants. This screening strategy leads to discovery of the new synergistic effects of non-phenolic compounds (i.e. gamma-terpinene,p-cymene and caryophyllene). In order to examine the performance of the designed model, the volatile components of hydrodistilled essential oil of Mentha samples were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and their antioxidant activities were measured by a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging test. Also, antioxidant activities of Mentha samples were predicted using QCAR model. The values predicted from the computational approaches have a reasonable agreement with the actual values obtained from DPPH assay. Finally, the designed method proves to be effective proce

This paper proposes parallel canonical differential evolutionary particle swarm optimization (C-DEEPSO) for voltage and reactive power control (Volt Var Control: VVC). The problem can be formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem (MINLP) and various evolutionary computation techniques have been applied to the problem including PSO, differential evolution (DE), and DEEPSO. Since VVC is one of the on-line controls, speed-up of computation is required. Moreover, there is still room for improvement on solution quality. This paper proposes parallel C-DEEPSO in order to speed up the calculation and improve solution quality and applies it to a VVC problem. The proposed method is applied to IEEE 118 bus system. The results indicate that the proposed method can realize fast computation and minimize active power losses more than conventional evolutionary computation techniques. © 2018

This paper proposes dependable parallel canonical differential evolutionary particle swarm optimization (C-DEEPSO) for voltage and reactive power control (Volt/Var Control: VVC). Since the problem can be formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem (MINLP), various evolutionary computation techniques have been applied to the problem including PSO, differential evolution (DE), and DEEPSO. Considering large penetration of renewable energies and deregulated environments of power systems, VVC requires fast computation for larger-scale VVC problems. One of the solutions to speed-up the computation is to utilize parallel and distributed computing. Since power system is one of the infrastructures of social community, not only fast computation, but also sustainable control (dependability) is strongly required for VVC. The simulation results with with IEEE 14, 30, 57, and 118 bus systems indicate that parallel C-DEEPSO is superior to the conventional parallel DEEPSO from the dependability point of view. © 2018

The harmony search (HS) algorithm is one of the recent evolutionary computation techniques to solve optimization problems. To make it applicable for lot-streaming flow shop problems, a discrete variant of the HS algorithm (DHS) with job permutations representation is proposed. In the proposed DHS algorithm, a new improvisation scheme is designed to generate feasible job sequences. A local search algorithm based on the insert neighborhood structure is fused to stress the further enhancement capability of the algorithm proposed whereas a restart scheme is employed to avoid the stagnation of the evolution. Extensive computational simulations and comparisons are provided, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DHS against the best performing algorithms from the literature.

One of the most challenging operational aspects in restructured systems with open transmission access is the congestion management of the grid. With the trend of an increasing number of bilateral and multilateral contracts submitted to the Independent System Operator (ISO), the possibility of insufficient resources in the transmission system may be unavoidable. In this work, we use an evolutionary computation technique known as Differential Evolution (DE), as an optimization tool for solving various congested scenarios, including pool, bilateral and multilateral transactions;as well as to estimate how the optimization process is affected by the economic valuation of those transactions.

Tato diplomová práce má za cíl vytvoření programové aplikace v jazyce Java, dále využitelné v oblasti automatického generování modelů, speciálně v úlohách tzv. symbolické regrese. Práce zahrnuje stručný popis genetického programování (GP) a vlastní implementací GP s důrazem na využití pokročilých operátorů (nedestruktivní operace, elitní přistup, zjednodušování výrazů). Pro zvolené datové množiny je technikou symbolické regrese generován matematický model. K ověření funkcionality je využito tzv. testovacích úloh. Pro vybrané parametry GP je hledáno optimální nastavení.
