This article presents the study of evolutionary computations for optimization of traffic lights signals at intersections in urban areas. evolutionary algorithm is applied to universal recurrent traffic flow model. The outcome of optimization process is a control program that regulates the traffic lights depending on the flow state at road sections. New formulas for predicting audible noise from overhead HVAC lines using evolutionary computations

Audible noise (AN) produced by corona discharges from high voltage transmission lines is one of the more important considerations in line design. Therefore, line designers must predetermine the AN using prediction formulas. This paper presents the results of applying evolutionary computation techniques using AN data from lines throughout the world to develop new, highly accurate formulas for predicting the A-weighted AN during heavy rain and stable rain from overhead ac lines. Calculated AN's using these new formulas and existing formulas are compared with measured data.

Analysis of a master-slave architecture for distributed evolutionary computations

This paper introduces a new mathematical model of the master-slave architecture for distributed evolutionary computations (EC). This model is validated using a concrete implementation based on the Distributed BEAGLE C++ framework. Results show that contrary to (current) popular belief, master-slave architectures are able to scale well over local area networks of workstations using off-the-shelf networking equipment. The main properties of the master-slave are also compared with those of the more mainstream island-model.

Geochemistry, petrology and evolutionary computations in the service of archaeology: restoration of the historical smelting process at the Katowice-Szopienice site

Activity at the smelting plant at Katowice-Szopienice dates back to the nineteenth century. Currently, the Museum of Zinc has been funded at the site. Unfortunately, as a result of unrest during both World Wars, all technological descriptions were lost. Three historically described samples were provided by Museum of Zinc and additional slag and lining samples were collected directly from the furnace. "Enriched ore" is dominated by ZnS (89.5%) as sphalerite and wurtzite accompanied by gangue minerals. "Roasted ore" is composed mainly of zincite (74%) resulting from the oxidation of ZnS. Study has proved that "roasted ore with coke" sample description is inappropriate. It is zinc depleted and enriched in Si (22.93 wt.%), Al (9.16 wt.%), C (9.66 wt.%) and its phase composition suggest that it contains recycled lining material and coke. Such characteristics place sample as additions used for smelting process. Advanced mathematical tool, the differential evolution algorithm, was used for restoration of smelting process at the site. Algorithm proved great usefulness by providing low dispersed results for calculated compositions of loss on smelting (mainly yield) with the fitting error reduced down to 1.19 wt.%. Loss on smelting composition was dominated by Zn (41.40 wt.%), Si (9.67 wt.%) and C (9.50 wt.%). Proportion of roasted ore to addition in smelting process was estimated as 1:1.27 and loss on smelting share from batch was 62%. Geochemistry and petrology have provided rich qualitative information about the samples and smelting process, but in combination with evolutionary computations, high-quality quantitative data were obtained.

This paper surveys modeling approaches for studying the evolution of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). Modeling of the design or 'wiring' of GRNs has become increasingly common in developmental and medical biology, as a means of quantifying gene-gene interactions, the response to perturbations, and the overall dynamic motifs of networks. Drawing from developments in GRN 'design' modeling, a number of groups are now using simulations to study how GRNs evolve, both for comparative genomics and to uncover general principles of evolutionary processes. Such work can generally be termed evolution in silico. Complementary to these biologically-focused approaches, a now well-established field of computer science is evolutionary computations (ECs), in which highly efficient optimization techniques are inspired from evolutionary principles. In surveying biological simulation approaches, we discuss the considerations that must be taken with respect to: (a) the precision and completeness of the data (e.g. are the simulations for very close matches to anatomical data, or are they for more general exploration of evolutionary principles);(b) the level of detail to model (we proceed from 'coarse-grained' evolution of simple gene-gene interactions to 'fine-grained' evolution at the DNA sequence level);(c) to what degree is it important to include the genome's cellular context;and (d) the efficiency of computation. With respect to the latter, we argue that developments in computer science EC offer the means to perform more complete simulation searches, and will lead to more comprehensive biological predictions. Modeling invasive species spread in Lake Champlain via evolutionary computations

We use a reaction diffusion equation, together with a genetic algorithm approach for model selection to develop a general modeling framework for biological invasions. The diffusion component of the reaction diffusion model is generalized to include dispersal and advection. The reaction component is generalized to include both linear and non-linear density dependence, and Allee effect. A combination of the reaction diffusion and genetic algorithm is able to evolve the most parsimonious model for invasive species spread. Zebra mussel data obtained from Lake Champlain, which demarcates the states of New York and Vermont, is used to test the appropriateness of the model. We estimate the minimum wave spread rate of Zebra mussels to be 22.5 km/year. In particular, the evolved models predict an average northward advection rate of 60.6 km/year (SD +/- A 1.9), which compares very well with the rate calculated from the known hydrologic residence time of 60 km/year. A combination of a reaction diffusion model and a genetic algorithm is, therefore, able to adequately describe some of the hydrodynamic features of Lake Champlain and the spread of a typical invasive species-Zebra mussels within the lake.

Analysis of a Schnute postulate-based unified growth mode for model selection in evolutionary computations

In order to evaluate the feasibility of a combined evolutionary algorithm-information theoretic approach to select the best model from a set of candidate invasive species models in ecology, and/or to evolve the most parsimonious model from a suite of competing models by comparing their relative performance, it is prudent to use a unified model that covers a myriad of situations. Using Schnute's postulates as a starting point [Schnute, J., 1981. A versatile growth model with statistically stable parameters, Can. J. Fish Aquat. Sci. 38, 1128-1140], we present a single, unified model for growth that can be successfully utilized for model selection in evolutionary computations. Depending on the parameter settings, the unified equation can describe several growth mechanisms. Such a generalized model mechanism, which encompasses a suite of competing models, can be successfully implemented in evolutionary computational algorithms to evolve the most parsimonious model that best fits ground truth data. We have done exactly this by testing the effectiveness of our reaction-diffusion-advection (RDA) model in an evolutionary computation model selection algorithm. A new approach to design a dynamic model of genes with multiple autonomous regulatory modules by evolutionary computations is proposed. The approach is based on Genetic Algorithms (GA), with new crossover operators especially designed for these purposes. The new operators use local homology between parental strings to preserve building blocks found by the algorithm. The approach exploits the subbasin-portal architecture of the fitness functions suitable for this kind of evolutionary modeling. This architecture is significant for Royal Road class fitness functions. Two real-life Systems Biology problems with such fitness functions are implemented here: evolution of the bacterial promoter rrnP1 and of the enhancer of the Drosophila even-skipped gene. The effectiveness of the approach compared to standard GA is demonstrated on several benchmark and real-life tasks. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

In this paper, we evaluate the effects of adaptive discretization of design variables in real-coded evolutionary computations (RCECs). While the appropriate granularity of design variables can improve convergence in RCECs, it is difficult to decide the appropriate one in advance in most of the practical optimization problems. Besides, when the granularity is too coarse, the diversity may be lost. To address these difficulties, we propose two adaptive discretization techniques that discretize each design variable using granularity determined according to the indicator of solution distribution state in design space. In this study, standard deviation(SD) or estimated probability density function(ePDF) is used as an indicator for determining granularities of design variables. We use NSGA-II as an RCEC and thirteen benchmark problems including engineering problems. The generational distance (GD) and inverted generational distance (IGD) metrics are used for investigating the performance of convergence and diversity, respectively. To make sure the statistical difference of results, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Welch's t-test are applied in each problem. The results of experiments show that both of the proposed methods can automatically improve convergence in many problems. In addition, it is confirmed that the diversity is also maintained.
