Summary. Tanker-based floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) systems have been in operation since Aug. 1977, when a single-well FPSO facility was put into production by Shell Espania in the Mediterranean. The overall operational experience with this system at this field is reviewed, with special attention to the wireline work over facilities, which have proved very satisfactory.A subsequent evolutionary step, a FPSO system accommodating multiple wells, necessitated development of a multi bore fluid swivel. A design program for this swivel was initiated in 1978; a prototype was built and full-scale testing finalized in 1980. A summary of the test results is *** with the multi bore swivel development, detailed engineering for an eight-well FPSO unit was begun. This system includes gas-lift and water-injection capabilities. Provisions for through-flow line (TFL) well work over can be incorporated. The detailed design is reviewed, as well as the latest development whereby the FPSO concept has been adapted to the North Sea *** and Background. Stationary offshore terminal facilities using former trading tankers were employed by the oil industry as early as 15 years ago. Initially, a tanker was connected by conventional hawsers to a catenary anchor leg mooring, where it served as a combination buffer storage vessel and mooring platform for shuttle tankers. Poor operational experience, low survival characteristics, and high maintenance costs stimulated the development of the single-buoy storage (SBS) system employing rigid arms for permanently mooring the vessel to the buoy. Humanity Rising: Why evolutionary developmentalism Will Inherit the Future

The main paradigm we presently use to understand our universe is theoretical physics. It has helped us understand much about space, time, energy, and matter but does not presently explain or predict the emergence of information, computation, life, and mind. In biological systems, the discipline of evolutionary development (evo-devo) biology studies how evolutionary and developmental processes interact to guide the production of ordered, complex, adaptive, and intelligent structures. In living systems, we can distinguish evolutionary processes, which are stochastic, variety-creating, divergent, and contingently adaptive, and developmental processes, which produce convergent and systemically statistically predictable structures and trajectories in a hierarchical developmental cycle, from seed, to adult, to reproduction, aging, and death. If our universe is also a cycling, evo devo system, that moves from seed, to adult, to reproduction and death, as several scientists and philosophers now suspect, it must also exhibit both unpredictable evolutionary creativity over its life span and many predictable and constraining developmental constants, functions, and futures, as it grows up, reproduces, and dies. As science learns to see our universe as an evo-devo system, our foresight will greatly improve, and humanity will gain new moral responsibilities, both to predict and help developmental processes unfold, and to increase evolutionary free choice and diversity of paths.

Exploring fault types, detection activities, and failure severity in an evolving safety-critical software system

Many papers have been published on analysis and prediction of software faults and/or failures, but few established the links from software faults (i.e., the root causes) to (potential or observed) failures and addressed multiple attributes. This paper aims at filling this gap by studying types of faults that caused software failures, activities taking place when faults were detected or failures were reported, and the severity of failures. Furthermore, it explores the associations among these attributes and the trends within releases (i.e., pre-release and post-release) and across releases. The results are based on the data extracted from a safety-critical NASA mission, which follows an evolutionary development process. In particular, we analyzed 21 large-scale software components, which together constitute over 8,000 files and millions of lines of code. The main insights include: (1) only a few fault types were responsible for the majority of failures pre-release and post-release, and across releases. Analysis and testing activities detected the majority of failures caused by each fault type. (2) The distributions of fault types differed for pre-release and post-release failures. (3) The percentage of safety-critical failures was small overall, and their relative contribution increased on-orbit. (4) Both post-release failures and safety-critical failures were more heavily associated with coding faults than with any other type of faults. (5) Components that experienced high number of failures in one release were not necessarily among high failure-prone components in the subsequent release. (6) Components that experienced more failures pre-release were more likely to fail post-release, overall and for each release.

To support the evolutionary development of information systems in decentralised organisations new tools and ways of organising information systems activities are required. A communications environment which enables co-operation and co-ordination between separate sub-units of an organisation is proposed. This environment, which is called a distributed decision making (DDM) system, allows associations between groups to be built up horizontally rather than by hierarchical structuring or centralised control. The DDM system software allows separate information systems components to be developed in parallel by different groups, and provides for the linking of these applications at execution time. A prototype DDM system and experience with using this system are described. It is a flexible and low-cost approach to the development ofad hocsystems such as decision support systems.

An Empirical Investigation of the Perceived Benefits of Agile Methodologies Using an Innovation-Theoretical model

There is little doubt that agile software development (ASD) methods have gained widespread acceptance in industry. Despite the attention these methods have received, there is little empirical affirmation of the benefits that accrue to those who use agile methodologies. Grounded in the conceptual foundations of innovation diffusion and agile philosophy of development, the authors' study validates a model to assess the perceived advantage of an iterative approach to software development. Consistent with their predictions, the results suggest that evolutionary development - the cornerstone of agile development - is perceived to be less complex and more compatible with the work habits of developers. Further, the findings support the hitherto unsubstantiated claim that iterative development yields benefits to software developers. However, process flexibility, yet another important characteristic of agile development, had no significant impact on complexity, compatibility, and relative advantage. The implications of the study for academics and practitioners, and directions for future research are discussed.

Evolution of Ecosystems under an Anthropogenic Load: From Disorganization to Self-Organization

The paper presents a concept of the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems, their disorganization when impacted by anthropogenic pollution, and evolutionary development after the effect of the toxicants decreased. The general laws of the ecosystem transformations are explained from the viewpoint of the ecological theory and the mechanism of thermodynamic ordering of matter in living systems. The evolutionary development of ecosystems after weakening of induced anthropogenic perturbations is demonstrated to be consistent with the trends of ecosystem successions: from a natural stage through critical one to a stable modification. The latter is characterized by a higher ordering of the matter and a decrease in the entropy. Ecosystems are not able to return to their natural state because they evolved through a critical state to a new stable one, which is characterized by highly ordered state of the matter.

Component-based APIs for versioning and distributed applications

Operating system application programming interfaces (APIs) are typically monolithic procedural interfaces that address a single machine's requirements. This design limits evolutionary development and complicates application development for distributed systems. Current APIs tend to be large, rigid, and focus on a single host machine. Component-based APIs could solve these problems through strong versioning capabilities and support for distributed applications. Ideally, obsolete API calls should be deleted, and calls with modified semantics (but unmodified parameters and return values) would remain the same. However, since the OS must continue to support legacy applications, obsolete calls cannot be deleted, and new call semantics are best introduced through new calls. In addition, typical OS APIs do not adequately address the needs of distributed applications: They have support for intermachine communication but lack high-level support for accessing remote OS resources. The primary omission is a uniform method for naming remote resources, such as windows, files, and synchronization objects.

The mechanisms behind compressive stress generation in gymnosperms are not yet fully understood. Investigating the structure-function relationships at the tissue and cell level, however, can provide new insights. Severe compression wood of all species lacks a S3 layer, has a high microfibril angle in the S2 layer and a high lignin content. Additionally, special features like helical cavities or spiral thickenings appear, which are not well understood in terms of their mechanical relevance, but need to be examined with regard to evolutionary trends in compression wood development. Thin compression wood foils and isolated tracheids of four gymnosperm species [Ginkgo biloba L., Taxus baccata L., Juniperus virginiana L., Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were investigated. The tracheids were isolated mechanically by peeling them out of the solid wood using fine tweezers. In contrast to chemical macerations, the cell wall components remained in their original condition. Tensile properties of tissue foils and tracheids were measured in a microtensile apparatus under wet conditions. Our results clearly show an evolutionary trend to a much more flexible compression wood. An interpretation with respect to compressive stress generation is discussed.

To optimize their management of information resources, companies are seeking higher payoff, higher risk systems to support important ill-structured problems. Such systems utilize evolutionary development techniques. Technology, design and programming practices, and the organizational environment critically constrain the success of these methods. However, an optimal balance can be reached among these constraints, since they are actually variables. Decision makers can optimize human performance through their choice of structure, reward system, and personnel. Structural changes involve selections in division of labor, organizational configuration, and the distribution of power. The integrated nature of evolutionary development favors organic rather than mechanistic organizational forms.

Generally, phenomena of spontaneous pattern formation are random and repetitive, whereas elaborate devices are the deterministic product of human design. Yet, biological organisms and collective insect constructions are exceptional examples of complex systems (CS) that are both architectured and self-organized. Can we understand their precise self-formation capabilities and integrate them with technological planning? Can physical systems be endowed with information, or informational systems be embedded in physics, to create autonomous morphologies and functions? To answer these questions, we have launched in 2009, and developed through a series of workshops and a collective book, a new field of research called morphogenetic engineering. It is the first initiative of its kind to rally and promote models and implementations of complex self-architecturing systems. Particular emphasis is set on the programmability and computational abilities of self-organization, properties that are often underappreciated in CS science-while, conversely, the benefits of self-organization are often underappreciated in engineering methodologies.
