Short-term hydrothermal scheduling through evolutionary programming technique

An efficient short-term hydrothermal scheduling algorithm based on the evolutionary programming (EP);technique is proposed. In the algorithm, the thermal generating units in the system are represented by an equivalent unit. The power balance constraints, total water discharge constraint, reservoir volume constraints and the constraints on the operation limits of the equivalent thermal and hydro units are fully taken into account. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through an example system and the results are compared with those obtained by the classical gradient search and simulated annealing (SA) approaches. Numerical results show that the proposed EP approach provides a cheaper schedule even than the SA approach and hence, has more powerful ability to achieve the global optimum solution than the SA approach. An interactive fuzzy satisfying method based on evolutionary programming technique for multiobjective short-term hydrothermal scheduling

This paper presents an interactive fuzzy satisfying method based on evolutionary programming technique for short-term multiobjective hydrothermal scheduling. The multiobjective problem is formulated considering two objectives: (i) cost and (ii) emission. Assuming that the decision maker (DM) has fuzzy goals for each of the objective functions, evolutionary programming technique based fuzzy satisfying method is applied for generating a corresponding optimal noninferior solution for the DM's goals. Then, by considering the current solution, the DM acts on this solution by updating the reference membership values until the satisfying solution for the DM can be obtained. A multi-reservoir cascaded hydroelectric system with a nonlinear relationship between water discharge rate, net head and power generation is considered. The water transport delay between connected reservoirs is taken into account. Thermal plants with nonsmooth fuel cost and emission level function are also taken into consideration. Estimation of model parameters from one-dimensional vertical electrical sounding data using evolutionary programming technique

Calculus based algebraic algorithms like Singular Value Decomposition, Ridge Regression, Weighted Ridge Regression, etc. were used in the inversion of resistivity data till late 80's. With the advent of high speed computers having higher disk space and parallel processing environment, several global optimization techniques (simulated evolution, simulated annealing, very fast simulated annealing, etc.) are adapted to solve various inherent problems in the inversion of geophysical data. In the present paper an attempt is made to use evolutionary programming (EP) technique for the estimation of layer parameters from one-dimensional Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) data. The algorithm is coded in FORTRAN 77 and tested on both synthetic and actual field data. The results, compared with those obtained by Singular Value Decomposition and borehole lithology, prove the efficiency and robustness of the EP approach.

Dynamic Economic Emission Dispatch Using evolutionary programming and Fuzzy Satisfying Method

Dynamic economic emission dispatch is an extension of the conventional economic emission dispatch problem that takes into consideration the ramp rate limits of the generators. evolutionary programming based fuzzy satisfying method has been proposed to determine the optimal noninferior generation schedule. This paper treats economy and emission as competing objectives for optimal dispatch, which requires some form of conflict resolution to arrive at a solution. The multi-objective problem is configured as a minimax problem under the assumption that the decision-maker has fuzzy goals for each of the objective functions. The present algorithm employs evolutionary programming technique in solving this problem. The solution methodology can offer a global or near-global noninferior solution for the decision-maker. Numerical results of a sample test system have been presented to demonstrate the performance and applicability of the proposed method. Results obtained from the proposed method are compared to those obtained by fuzzy satisfying method based on simulated annealing technique.
