In this paper, a comprehensive power performance analysis of a novel Adaptive Switching algorithm for an iterative-MIMO system is investigated with the prime goal of minimizing energy consumption in the receiver. The algorithm works by switching between a high performance detection method, the Fixed Sphere Decoding, and a much lower complexity algorithm, the Vertical-Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time Zero Forcing technique, controlled by a threshold according to the mutual information calculated during each transmission. Results show significant improvements over current non-adaptive receivers, where energy savings of more than 60% can be obtained using on the latest Xilinx (R) Virtex-7 FPGA hardware.

In this paper, a Space Vector Modulation (SVM) based algorithm for a high frequency (HF) link based AC-AC converter is proposed. This converter has two stages-three phase low frequency AC to single phase high frequency AC and followed by a conversion to three phase variable voltage, variable frequency AC. The intermediate HF link offers possibility of galvanic isolation along with the option to step up the link voltage using a compact HF transformer. The presence of the AC link eliminates the need for the bulky DC link capacitor found in most AC-AC converter configurations. This converter is based on the matrix converter topology utilizing four quadrant switches. The algorithm for this converter along with the simulation and experimental results are included in this paper.

A major challenge in swarm robotics is to minimize energy and time costs. We focus in this paper on multi-agent foraging algorithms that uses ant-like agents with limited energy. By considering energy consumption, we propose a new Energy aware Cooperative Switching algorithm for Foraging (EC-SAF) that optimizes the whole system search and transport operations needed to collect resources over time. Unnecessary moves are avoided according to the following two premises: (1) Quick search and optimal paths provided by Stigmergic Multi-Ant Search Area (S-MASA) algorithm;(2) Quick homing provided by using the optimal paths created while searching. Results indicate that EC-SAF is promising in reducing swarm energy consumption compared to an energy-aware version of the c-marking algorithm (Ec-marking).

Generalized linear models (GLMs) have been used widely for modeling the mean response both for discrete and continuous random variables with an emphasis on categorical response. Recently Yang, Mandal and Majumdar (2013) considered full factorial and fractional factorial locally D-optimal designs for binary response and two-level experimental factors. In this article, we extend their results to a general setup with response belonging to a single-parameter exponential family and for multilevel predictors.

Sampling designs on stream networks using the pseudo-Bayesian approach

Monitoring stream networks through time provides important ecological information. The sampling design problem is to choose locations where measurements are taken so as to maximise information gathered about physicochemical and biological variables on the stream network. This paper uses a pseudo-Bayesian approach, averaging a utility function over a prior distribution, in finding a design which maximizes the average utility. We use models for correlations of observations on the stream network that are based on stream network distances and described by moving average error models. Utility functions used reflect the needs of the experimenter, such as prediction of location values or estimation of parameters. We propose an algorithmic approach to design with the mean utility of a design estimated using Monte Carlo techniques and an exchange algorithm to search for optimal sampling designs. In particular we focus on the problem of finding an optimal design from a set of fixed designs and finding an optimal subset of a given set of sampling locations. As there are many different variables to measure, such as chemical, physical and biological measurements at each location, designs are derived from models based on different types of response variables: continuous, counts and proportions. We apply the methodology to a synthetic example and the Lake Eacham stream network on the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Australia. We show that the optimal designs depend very much on the choice of utility function, varying from space filling to clustered designs and mixtures of these, but given the utility function, designs are relatively robust to the type of response variable.

Using Genetic algorithms to Generate D-s-Optimal Response Surface Designs

This research introduces a new approach to the generation of Ds-optimal designs for subsets of parameters of the second-order response surface model for 2, 3, and 4-dimensional hypercube design spaces while simultaneously satisfying a specified minimum value for the Defficiency for the full model. Specifically, 1-point and 2-point exchange algorithms and a genetic algorithmwere developed to generate these designs. The results indicate that theDs-criterion values of the GA designs were greater than or equal to those of designs generated by exchange algorithms and by the Optex procedure in SAS. Thus, in general, the GA is superior to the exchange algorithms for generating subset optimal designs.

Using a Genetic algorithm to Generate D-s-Optimal Designs for Mixture Experiments in a Simplex Region

We propose and develop a genetic algorithm(GA) to generate D-s-optimal or near-optimal mixture designs of a simplex region that maximizes the D-s-criterion while simultaneously guaranteeing an acceptable D-efficiency for the mixture experiments. Our method does not need a candidate set which makes it possible to select points throughout a continuous region. Two new GAs are developed to handle specific subsets of quadratic and special cubic mixture model terms. Summaries of GA designs are reported for 3 and 4 mixture components. The performance of GA designs is assessed in comparisons with the designs generated from an exchange algorithm (EA) and SAS Proc OPTEX computer generated designs (CGDs). The results show that the Ds-criterion values of the GA designs for all percentage of D-efficiency were greater than or equal to those of the EA and SAS Proc OPTEX designs(CGDs). This suggests that the GA is a effective method for generating subset optimal designs for mixture experiments.

In this paper, we consider unfalsified adaptive control with candidate controllers that are in the structure of model predictive control (MPC) and are associated with parametrized models. Thus, each candidate controller corresponds to a parameter of the models and a switching corresponds to an update of the parameter selection. We introduce a new switching algorithm in order to pursue a performance criterion imposed on an output signal of an underlying system as well as identification of the system. This switching algorithm achieves an asymptotic boundedness of the performance criterion while the parameter update may be performed endlessly. At the beginning of an experiment, the switchings can be set to be performed mainly focused on identification of the system. Thus, we implement an input design scheme in the MPC structure for a better transient behavior of the closed-loop system via fast system identification.

The notions of Pareto optimality for vector-valued cost functions reflecting multiple objectives of a control system are examined within the framework of Unfalsified Adaptive Control. The set of conditions under which vector-valued cost functions are cost-detectable is discussed. A sampled data/discrete-time Level-Set controller switching algorithm is investigated which allows for the relaxation of the assumption that the controller cost function be monotonically nondecreasing in time. This opens up the possibility of the use of fading memory cost functions which are nonmonotone. When an active controller is falsified at the current threshold cost level, the Level-Set switching algorithm solves the multi-objective cost minimization problem and replaces the active controller by another as yet unfalsified Pareto optimal controller. Theoretical results for convergence and stability of the adaptive system are given. Simulation results validate the use of cost-detectable multi-objective cost functions. An example of a cost-detectable cost function which uses fading memory norm of the fictitious tracking error as a performance measure is shown. This allows for computation of performance of nonactive controllers with respect to a reference model.

Gibbs random fields play an important role in statistics. However, they are complicated to work with due to an intractability of the likelihood function and there has been much work devoted to finding computational algorithms to allow Bayesian inference to be conducted for such so-called doubly intractable distributions. This article extends this work and addresses the issue of estimating the evidence and Bayes factor for such models. The approach that we develop is shown to yield good performance.
