In this paper we explore how to embed symbolic relational graphs with unweighted edges in eigenspaces. We adopt a graph-spectral approach. The leading eigenvectors of the graph adjacency matrix are used to define clusters of nodes. For each cluster, we compute vectors of spectral properties. We embed these vectors in a pattern-space using principal components analysis and multidimensional scaling techniques. We demonstrate both methods result in well-structured view spaces for graph-data extracted from 2D views of 3D objects.

A practical method for creating a high dimensional index structure that adapts to the data distribution and scales well with the database size, is presented. Typical media descriptors, such as texture features, are high dimensional and are not uniformly distributed in the feature space. The performance of many existing methods degrade if the data is not uniformly distributed. The proposed method offers an efficient solution to this problem. First, the data's marginal distribution along each dimension is characterized using a Gaussian mixture model. The parameters of this model are estimated using the well known expectation-maximization (EM) method. These model parameters can also be estimated sequentially for on-line updating. Using the marginal distribution information, each of the data dimensions can be partitioned such that each bin contains approximately an equal number of objects. Experimental results on a real image texture data set are presented. Comparisons with existing techniques, such as the well known VA-File, demonstrate a significant overall improvement.

A new statistical model for characterizing texture images based on wavelet-domain hidden Markov models and steerable pyramids is presented. The new model is shown to capture well both the subband marginal distributions and the dependencies across scales and orientations of the wavelet descriptors. Once it is trained for an input texture image, the model can be easily steered to characterize that texture at any other orientations. After a diagonalization operation, one obtains a rotation-invariant description of the texture image. The effectiveness of the new model is demonstrated in large test image databases where significant gains in retrieval performance are shown.

We introduce a new image texture segmentation algorithm, HMTseg based on wavelet-domain hidden Markov tree (HMT) models. The HMT model is a tree-structured probabilistic graph that captures the statistical properties of wavelet coefficients. Since the HMT is particularly well suited to images containing singularities (edges and ridges), it provides provides a good classifier for textures. Utilizing the inherent tree structure of the wavelet HMT and its fast training and likelihood computation algorithms, we perform multiscale texture classification at various scales. We then fuse these multiscale classifications using a Bayesian probabilistic graph to obtain a reliable final segmentation. Since HMTseg works on the wavelet transform of the image, it can directly segment wavelet-compressed images, without the need for decompression. We demonstrate the performance of HMTseg with synthetic, aerial photo, and document image segmentations.

In this paper, we first present a Weighted Fourier transform and RELAXation based method (referred to as WRELAX), which is both computationally and statistically efficient, for the well-known time delay estimation problem. Later WRELAX is extended to multiple look cases where the receiver noise is assumed to be zero-mean colored Gaussian noise with unknown covariance matrices. Numerical examples show that;both WRELAX and its extensions can approach the corresponding Cramer-Rao bound, the minimum attainable variances for any unbiased estimators, for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios. The new algorithm can be applied to detecting and classifying roadway subsurface anomalies by using an ultra wideband ground penetrating radar. Experimental examples are also provided to demonstrate the performance of the new algorithm.

In this paper, a general philosophy about feature windows based applications and a windows-based application are presented for analysis, algorithm development, testing and validation studies for Signal, Image and Data Processing (SIDP) for Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) Applications. This dedicated facility is called AUG_SIDP. It performs several specialized tasks such as blur estimation, restoration, CFAR detection, clutter modeling, registration, pixel and data level fusion, target tracking and classification. It is still in the development and testing phase.

We report results from a field demonstration of a non-scanning high-speed imaging spectrometer capable of simultaneously recording spatial and spectral information about a rapidly changing scene. High-speed spectral imaging was demonstrated by collecting spectral and spatial snapshots of a missile in flight. This instrument is based on computed-tomography concepts and operates in the visible (420-740 nm). Raw image data were recorded at video frame rate (30 fps) and an integration time of 2 msec. Reconstructions of the spatial and spectral scene information from the raw image data take considerably longer, on the order of 30 seconds. Comparisons of reconstructed spectra with spectra acquired by a non-imaging reference spectrometer have shown that extended-source spectra were reconstructed accurately. We present representative missile spectral-signature data and missile-tracking linear-classifier results from the missile firing.

In this paper we present simple conditions related to geometric ergodicity of Markov chains which ensure the convergence in a given sense of the simulated annealing algorithm. We prow that convergence of the algorithm occurs for a proper sequence of temperatures when a local minorization condition of the transition kernels and a drift condition are statisfied. This result may be useful in a Bayesian framework, where it is possible to take advantage of the statistical structure of the problem in order to perform efficient optimization. This is illustrated on several examples.

In positron emission tomography (PET) images have to be reconstructed from noisy projection data. The noise on the PET data can be modeled by a Poisson distribution. The development of statistical (iterative) reconstruction techniques addresses the problem of noise. In this paper we present the results of introducing the simulated annealing technique as a statistical reconstruction algorithm for PET. We have successfully implemented a reconstruction algorithm based upon simulated annealing, with paying particular attention to the fine-tuning of various parameters (cooling schedule, granularity, stopping rule, ...). In addition, we have developed a cost function more appropriate to the noise statistics (e.g. Poisson) and the reconstruction method (e.g. ML). The comparison with other reconstruction methods using computer phantom studies proves the potential power of the simulated annealing technique for the reconstruction of PET-images.

This paper presents an alternating minimization (AM) algorithm used in training radial basis function (RBF) networks. The AM algorithm can also be viewed as a competitive learning paradigm. Its use is illustrated by optimizing a colony-style control system. The application arises in the context of hybrid control systems. The algorithm is a modification of a small-step interior point method used in solving primal linear programs. The algorithm has a convergence rate of 0((root)nL) iterations where n is a measure of the network size and L is a measure of the resulting solution's accuracy.
