With the ever increasing deployment and usage of gigabit networks, traditional network anomaly detection based intrusion detection systems have not scaled accordingly. Most, if not all, systems deployed assume the availability of complete and clean data for the purpose of intrusion detection. We contend that this assumption is not valid. Factors like noise in the audit data, mobility of the nodes and the large amount of network data generated by the network make it difficult to build a normal traffic profile of the network for the purpose of anomaly detection. From this perspective, we present an anomaly detection scheme, called SCAN (stochastic clustering algorithm for network anomaly detection), that has the capability to detect intrusions with high accuracy even when audit data is not complete. We use the expectation-maximization algorithm to cluster the incoming audit data and compute the missing values in the audit data. We improve the speed of convergence of the clustering process by using Bloom filters and data summaries. We evaluate SCAN using the 1999 DARPA/Lincoln Laboratory intrusion detection evaluation dataset.

We are developing insert devices for existing PET scanners to improve the image resolution with almost the same sensitivity as current PET scanners. The insert device can be used to zoom into a particular organ of interest. Introduction of the insert inside the scanner leads to three types of coincidences: insert-insert (II), insert-scanner (IS) and scanner-scanner (SS). In typical whole-body PET scanners, coincidences recorded in the scanner are sorted into parallel-beam sinograms and images are reconstructed using linear or iterative techniques. In the PET-insert system, the coincidences of type IS have an inherent fan-beam geometry. Reconstruction using parallel-beam sinograms introduces severe streaking artifacts in the images. The coincidences sorted into fan-beam sinograms reduce the artifacts in the reconstructed images. The approach to compute the kernel was derived from CT as there exists an analogy between the PET-insert geometry and a fourth generation CT scanner geometry. In this approach, the weights in the kernel are computed using the intersection of a cone with a voxel. We previously developed two dimensional reconstruction algorithms for this novel system geometry. We extend this work to three dimensions in this paper. A maximum-likelihood expectation-maximization algorithm was used to reconstruct the data. The kernel was validated with a contrast recovery study using a digital phantom. Images reconstructed from experimental data show good quality without any visible artifacts.

In this paper we propose a novel statistical framework to model the impact of process variations on semiconductor circuits through the use of process sensitive test structures. Based on multivariate statistical assumptions, we propose the use of the expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate any missing test measurements and to calculate accurately the statistical parameters of the underlying multivariate distribution. We also propose novel techniques to validate our statistical assumptions and to identify any outliers in the measurements. Using the proposed model, we analyze the impact of the systematic and random sources of process variations to reveal their spatial structures. We utilize the proposed model to develop a novel application that significantly reduces the volume, time, and costs of the parametric test measurements procedure without compromising its accuracy. We extensively verify our models and results on measurements collected from more than 300 wafers and over 25 thousand die fabricated at a state-of-the-art facility. We prove the accuracy of our proposed statistical model and demonstrate its applicability towards reducing the volume and time of parametric test measurements by about 2.5 - 6.1times at absolutely no impact to test quality.

The max-min propagation neural network model is considered as a hierarchical mixture of experts by replacing the max (min) units with softmax functions. The resulting mixture is different from the model of Jordan and Jacobs, but we exploit the similarities between both models to derive a probability model. Learning is treated as a maximum-likelihood problem, in particular we present a gradient ascent algorithm and an expectation-maximization algorithm. Simulation results on the parity problem and the majority problem are reported.

We present a new framework for PET-MR reconstruction using deep learning. The proposed network named Dense Syn-Net is a new version of the synergistic network Syn-Net. This method is built on two model-based image reconstruction algorithms, the maximum a posteriori expectation-maximization algorithm for PET and the Landweber algorithm for MR, that we fully connect to each other. To avoid the use of handcrafted regularisations, the gradient of the priors for PET and MR are learned from training data along with regularisation strengths for both modalities. Two major modifications of the original Syn-Net have been introduced: i) iteration-dependent targets are used to ensure that the output of every module matches the corresponding iteration of the reconstruction of high quality data, ii) all the previous PET and MR estimates are used to guide the regularisation in a given module allowing both self and inter-modality guidance. Results on 2D simulated data show that Dense-Syn-Net outperforms conventional independent PET and MR reconstruction algorithms. For MR, our method offers improvements compared to deep learned independent methods and synergistic PET-MR reconstruction with mutually weighted quadratic priors. For PET reconstruction, our network shows greater robustness towards mismatches than MR-guided methods by better preserving modality-unique features. Dense Syn-Net improved global image reconstruction accuracy compared to Syn-Net, however the latter performs better for regions of mismatch. Future work will need to focus on assessing the performance of the network on 3D real data and performing ablation studies to investigate the need of fully connections.

In this paper, we propose an analytical framework to statistically analyze the battery recharging time (BRT) in reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-assisted wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Specifically, we derive novel expressions for the probability density function (PDF), and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the BRT of the radio frequency energy harvesting (RFEH) wireless nodes. Considering both the direct link and the links provided by the RIS, the received power at the RFEH nodes is modeled as a gamma mixture model (GMM), where the parameters of GMM are calculated using the expectation-maximization algorithm. Utilizing the derived expressions, we provide a comprehensive analysis for the statistical characterization of the BRT and investigate how the system and battery parameters affect the charging time performance. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the theoretical results.

The multigram model assumes that language can be described as the output of a memoryless source that emits variable-length sequences of words. The estimation of the model parameters can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation problem from incomplete data. We show that estimates of the model parameters can be computed through an iterative expectation-maximization algorithm and we describe a forward-backward procedure for its implementation. We report the results of a systematical evaluation of multigrams for language modeling on the ATIS database. The objective performance measure is the test set perplexity. Our results show that multigrams outperform conventional n-grams for this task.

The authors quantitatively and qualitatively examine the use of a Gibbs prior in maximum a posteriori (MAP) reconstruction of SPECT images of pulmonary perfusion using the expectation-maximization algorithm (EM). This Bayesian approach is applied to SPECT projection data acquired from a realistic torso phantom with spherical defects in the lungs simulating perfusion deficits. Both the scatter subtraction constant (k) and the smoothing parameter beta (/spl beta/) characterizing the prior are varied to study their affect on image quality and quantification. Region of interest (ROI) analysis is used to compare MAP-EM radionuclide concentration estimates with those derived from a "clinical" implementation of filtered backprojection (CFBP), and a quantitative implementation of FBP (QFBP) utilizing nonuniform attenuation and scatter compensation. Qualitatively, the MAP-EM images contain reduced artifacts near the lung boundaries relative to the FBP implementations. Overall MAP-FM image visual quality and the ability to discern the areas of reduced radionuclide concentration in the lungs depend on the value of /spl beta/ and the total number of iterations. For certain choices of /spl beta/ and total iterations, MAP-EM lung images are visually comparable to FBP. Based on profile and ROI analysis, SPECT QFBP and MAP-FM images have the potential to provide quantitatively accurate reconstructions when compared to CFBP; computational burden, however, is greater for the MAP-FM approach. To demonstrate the potential clinical efficacy of the methods, the authors present pulmonary perfusion images of a patient with lung cancer.

Conventional training of a hidden Markov model (HMM) is performed by an expectation-maximization algorithm using a maximum likelihood (ML) criterion. It was reported that, using an incremental variant of maximum a posteriori estimation, substantial speed improvements could be obtained. The approach requires a prior distribution when the training starts, although it is difficult to find an appropriate prior for some cases. This paper presents a new approach for achieving an efficient training of HMM parameters using the standard ML criterion. A prior distribution is not required. The algorithm sequentially selects a subset of data from the training set, updates the parameters from the subset, then iterates until convergence. There is a solid theoretical foundation that ensures a monotone likelihood improvement; thus stable convergence is guaranteed. Experimental results indicate substantially faster convergence than the standard batch training algorithm while holding the same level of recognition performance.
