The Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL) of the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) host the Selective Production of Exotic Species (SPES) facility, which will employ the Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) method to generate Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs) for scientific research. At SPES, a proton beam interacts with a primary target, producing radioactive neutral isotopes subsequently ionized for experimentation. The FEBIAD type ion source, essential for the ionization process, operates at extreme working conditions (temperature above 2000 degrees C and high vacuum regime) and faces challenges due to conventional manufacturing limitations affecting its performance stability. The Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology emerges as a potential solution to produce the ion source parts overcoming such limits. In this paper, experimental methods for assessing LPBF components behavior at the effective working conditions are detailed. Specifically, an accurate measurement of deformation at high temperature caused by thermal expansion remains crucial, necessitating an updated experimental setup incorporating a vision system. Stringent requirements for this system include precise positioning, calibration, resolution, illumination, and alignment capabilities to effectively evaluate deformations during operation.

The article examines the possibilities and boundaries of the transformation of the experimental method in the process of mastering digital tools and technologies for processing large amounts of information using artificial intelligence systems. The author analyses such innovative changes in experimental cognition practices as automation of routine operations, big data analysis, intelligent modeling and forecasting, optimization of experimental design, automated hypothesis generation, intelligent experiment management in real time, as well as improved accuracy and reproducibility. Based on the analysis, historical parallels are drawn that allow us to reconstruct the evolution of the way reality is constructed in science as measurement tools and techniques improve, as well as the accompanying changes in the systematization of scientific knowledge and its integration into the space of scientific theory. Attempts to create a new ontology for the modernization of the system of ontological assumptions underlying the experimental study of nature and society are separately investigated. The analysis focuses on the ontological doctrines of Karl Popper and Roger Penrose, each of which is based on the concept of three worlds. The similarities and differences of these "three-component" ontologies are shown, as well as the possibilities of their application to substantiate the consequences of the introduction of artificial intelligence systems and the big data method into the experimental activities of researchers. The strengths in the definition of the "third world" by Karl Popper and Roger Penrose are identified and described, as well as the theoretical and conceptual difficulties that arise in each of these cases. The possibility of substantiating a new model of experimental research in the course of applying new tools and methods, such as artificial intelligence systems and the big data method, is being critically analyzed.

An experimental method is presented for characterization of the combined intensity and frequency modulation produced when the injection current of a laser diode is modulated. The reported technique is based on the analysis of the harmonic signals produced when a modulated laser is used to probe a gas absorption line by the so-called wavelength-modulation spectroscopy method. Based on a theoretical model of this technique, we present two methods that facilitate the determination of (i) the deviation in laser frequency and (ii) the phase shift between intensity and frequency modulation. These methods are illustrated experimentally by measurement of the modulation parameters of a 2-mum distributed-feedback laser by use of a CO2 absorption line. The experimental results have been compared with those obtained with another traditional method and have shown full agreement in the frequency range (400 Hz-30 kHz) considered. To study the experimental method of axial compressive test of concrete columns in service strengthened with bonding FRP(fiber reinforced plastic), the post-tensioned pre-stressing method was employed to exert initial stress to the specimens before bonding FRP, Then FRP was bonded. Axial loading method of the specimens was that one main jack exerted axial force and two jacks provided stiffness for the specimens. In this way the complete stress-strain curves of specimens was obtained. The results indicated the technical target of axial compressive test of in service concrete columns strengthened with FRP was greatly achieved by using this experimental method.

In-plane shear mechanical experiments of ceramic matrix mini-composites (CMMC) were realized in this paper by overcoming the difficulties of material preparation, specimen design, gripping and loading, deformation measurement, etc. The in-plane shear stress strain responses of different matrix volume fractions were obtained based on the method. The stress-strain response of CMMC was strongly non-linear, and its elastic modulus and strength were positively correlated to the matrix volume fraction. The main factors affecting the digital image correlation (DIC) based micro-region shear deformation measurement are analyzed quantitatively, and the corresponding solutions are discussed. The DIC calculation time model is established, and the accurate estimation of DIC processing time is realized. The shear strain field evolution clearly captured the matrix crack initiation and propagation.& COPY;2023 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V. Crack initiation and path selection in brittle specimens: A novel experimental method and computations

We present a novel experimental method aiming at investigating aspects of dynamic crack propagation in brittle materials under in-plane, quasi-static, mixed mode loading. The method consists in gluing a precracked specimen into a rectangular hole in an aluminum frame using thin layers of epoxy resin. The driving force for crack initiation and propagation lies in the mismatch between the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of the aluminum frame and the specimen, following modest heating of the assembly on an electrical heating stage. The main advantages of this method are in its avoidance of gripping problems and of the need to employ a complicated loading device. An important benefit of this method is the ability to analyze, numerically, the assembly containing the specimen as a boundary value problem by means of finite element analysis without any prior assumptions regarding the boundary conditions. The method enables investigation of various aspects of dynamic crack propagation in brittle materials, including crack initiation, crack path selection criteria, and surface instabilities under a relatively low energy-speed regime. To validate the method's applicability, we first evaluated the fracture toughness. K-IC, of soda lime glass specimens. We then performed fracture experiments of slow and fast crack propagation in these specimens under combined tensile and shear stresses, which revealed the paths selected by the cracks. These paths were calculated using quasi-static finite element analysis (FEA), code Franc2D, and the dynamic extended FEA method, using the criteria for crack path selection. It was found that the crack paths obeyed the law of local symmetry (K-11=0) for both the quasi-static and dynamic crack propagation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mathematical modeling of concrete beams containing GO nanoparticles for vibration analysis and measuring their compressive strength using an experimental method

Due to the extensive use of concrete structures in various applications, the improvement of their strength and quality has become of great importance. A new way of achieving this purpose is to add different types of nanoparticles to concrete admixtures. In this work, a mathematical model has been employed to analyze the vibration of concrete beams reinforced by graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles. To verify the accuracy of the presented model, an experimental study has been conducted to compare the compressive strengths of these beams. Since GO nanoparticles are not readily dissolved in water, before producing the concrete samples, the GO nanoparticles are dispersed in the mixture by using a shaker, magnetic striker, ultrasonic devices, and finally, by means of a mechanical mixer. The sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory (SSDBT) is employed to model the concrete beams. The Mori-Tanaka model is used to determine the effective properties of the structure, including the agglomeration influences. The motion equations are calculated by applying the energy method and Hamilton's principle. The vibration frequencies of the concrete beam samples are obtained by an analytical method. Three samples containing 0.02% GO nanoparticles are made and their compressive strengths are measured and compared. There is a good agreement between our results and those of the mathematical model and other papers, with a maximum difference of 1.29% between them. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of nanoparticle volume fraction and agglomeration and the influences of beam length and thickness on the vibration frequency of concrete structures. The results show that by adding the GO nanoparticles, the vibration frequency of the beams is increased.

In this paper, an experimental method for measuring dynamic behavior of materials at high strain rates is developed. The strain and stress of a specimen are obtained using a high-precision photonic Doppler velocimetry system and a sensitive polyvinylidene fluoride thin-film sensor respectively. Based on the assumptions of one-dimensional stress state and negligible volume change at plastic deformation stage, the dynamic stress strain relationship of materials can be determined. Using Al-2024T351 alloy and copper as model materials, the method demonstrates its effectiveness in measuring dynamic behavior of materials at high strain rates. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Theory of film condensation heat transfer(FCHT) for vapor condensed on horizontal tube bundle(HTB) is vital to many industry ***,the inundation effect is the key to model the film condensation heat transfer coefficient(CHTC) on *** paper proposed a new experimental method,homologous method,to obtain the inundation effect *** on the requirements of the new test method,a new test facility was designed and ***,the superiority of homologous method for inundation effect was investigated based on experiment result and theoretic *** results showed that the homogenous method can effectively control the experimental error of inundation effect,which is less than 50% of the error of CHTC,and less than 30% of the error of the inundation effect gained by routine *** new test facility built for the homogenous method is excellent in obtaining the accurate inundation effect of film condensation on *** the result is a foundation of the theoretical development of the FCHT on HTB.

Displacement timer pins: An experimental method for measuring the dynamic deformation of explosively loaded plates

The measurement of dynamic deformation of an explosively loaded plate is an extremely onerous task. Existing techniques such as digital image correlation are expensive and the equipment may be damaged by explosively driven debris/ejecta, particularly if it is necessary to locate such equipment close to loaded elements which are likely to fail. A new, inexpensive and robust measurement technique for use in fullscale blast testing is presented, which involves the placement of displacement timer pins (DTPs) at predefined distances from the rear surface of the centre of a plate. A strain gauge on the perimeter of each pin records the time at which the plate comes into contact with the end of each DTP and hence has deformed to that value of displacement, giving a direct measure of the time-varying deformation at a discrete point on the plate. An experimental proof-of-concept was conducted and the results are compared with numerical displacements determined using LS-DYNA. The numerical and experimental results were in very good agreement, which suggests that the proposed experimental method offers a valuable means for determining the full-scale response of structures subjected to blast loads in aggressive environments. Further improvements to the experimental procedure are outlined, along with applications where the DTPs are particularly suited. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
