In exploratory programming, programmers often face a semantic gap between their high-level understanding and the low-level interfaces available for interacting with objects in a system. That is, technical object structure and behavior need to be interpreted as abstract domain concepts, which then increases cognitive load and thus impedes exploration progress. We propose semantic object interfaces that bridge this gap by enabling contextual, natural-language conversations with objects. Our approach leverages an exploratory programming agent powered by a large language model (LLM) to translate natural-language questions into low-level experiments and provide high-level answers. We describe a framework for integrating semantic object interfaces into existing exploratory programming systems, including a prototype implementation in Squeak/Smalltalk using GPT-4o. We showcase the potential of semantic object interfaces through case studies and discuss their feasibility, limitations, and impact on the programming experience. While challenges remain, our approach promises to reduce mental effort and empower programmers to explore and understand systems at a higher level of abstraction for a better programming experience.

The current deep learning trend has given new popularity to the exploratory programming style, which often comes with high and exclusive-use demands on compute hardware and memory resources. Yet, the underlying system software is unaware of the memory semantics within applications-inhibiting optimization and use of emerging technologies. Due to over-abstraction, hardware utilization is low, resource waste (including energy) is high, and development cycles in shared scenarios are slow since users have to wait for others to give up their locks. This demo paper investigates how novel memory technologies can benefit exploratory programming. We present Ersa, a Jupyter Notebooks extension prototype, that enforces the sharing of memory and compute resources, like GPUs, while other users are exploring their data and editing code.

The act of computer programming can take many different forms. For example, a software engineer might rewrite C++ code to speed up some process;an analyst might use a spreadsheet program to gain insights into their data;or a creative coder might write a program to create an abstract visualization that is synchronized with music. While each of these tasks is a complex activity involving creative problem-solving, the first example has a well-defined goal, while the second and third examples are more open-ended. Generally, programming activities involving data analysis or artistic creative practice can be seen as exploratory programming, characterized by rapid experimentation and an evolving set of goals [1]. In the creative coding example, the coder might explore several options using different combinations of colors, shapes, textures, and animation speeds. There is no 'correct' answer for what the final product should look like, and in fact, what they envision at the outset might be completely different from what they ultimately create. © 2023 IEEE.

exploratory programming is a software development style in which code is a medium for prototyping ideas and solutions, and in which even the end-goal can evolve over time. exploratory programming is valuable in various contexts such as programming education, data science, and end-user programming. However, there is a lack of appropriate tooling and language design principles to support exploratory programming. This paper presents a host language- and object language-independent protocol for exploratory programming akin to the Language Server Protocol. The protocol serves as a basis to develop novel (or extend existing) programming environments for exploratory programming such as computational notebooks and command-line REPLs. An architecture is presented on top of which prototype environments can be developed with relative ease, because existing ( language) components can be reused. Our prototypes demonstrate that the proposed protocol is sufficiently expressive to support exploratory programming scenarios as encountered in literature within the software engineering, human-computer interaction and data science domains.

Data science is an open-ended task in which exploratory programming is a common practice. Data workers often need faster and easier ways to explore alternative approaches to obtain insights from data, which frequently compromises code quality. To understand how well current IDEs support this exploratory workflow, we conducted an observational study with 19 data workers. In this paper, we present two significant findings from our analysis that highlight issues faced by data workers: (a) code hoarding and (b) excessive task switching and code cloning. To mitigate these issues, we provide design recommendations based on existing work, and propose to augment IDEs with an interactive visual plugin. This plugin parses source code to identify and visualize high-level task details. Data workers can use the resulting visualization to better understand and navigate the source code. As a realization of this idea, we present HypothesisManager, an add-in for RStudio that identifies and visualizes the hypotheses that a data worker is testing for statistical significance through her source code.

exploratory programming is one of the programming techniques, and it is considered to be an effective way to improve programming skills for novices. However, there is no existing system or programming environment educating exploratory programming for novices. Therefore, we have developed a tool, named as Pockets, to support novice's exploratory programming. Through Pockets, educators are able to identify where and when novices experience difficulties during exploratory programming. In addition, it is possible to assist educators' mentoring by referring collected logs through the proposed system. We have also conducted a case study and evaluated the usefulness of the tool. As a result, Pockets makes novices' exploratory programming more efficient, and also allows more accurate advice by educators.

programming is becoming a new literacy, and programming education is being implemented in various settings. One of the issues faced by novice programmers is a lack of problem-solving skills. They have difficulty planning abstract solutions and expressing them in a program. This study proposes a programming learning system that supports novice programmers' thinking processes when solving programming tasks. The system presents candidates for solutions in natural language and allows the user to solve the problem by choosing from a limited number of options. The method allows users to repeat quick trial-and-error solutions without being interrupted by coding-induced problems. We implemented the proposed system as a web application for use on a smartphone and applied it in a university's introductory programming class. After applying the proposed system to 37 students for four weeks, we found a correlation between the number of times a user selected an option using the proposed system and the class task score. We confirmed the possibility that using the proposed system can improve problem-solving skills for programming tasks.

In modern software development, programmers typically choose between two main types of coding environments: Incremental programming Environments (IPEs), such as the Read-Eval-Print-Loop (REPL) interpreter IPython and the Jupyter Computational Notebook, and Integrated (text-based) Development Environments (IDEs), such as Visual Studio Code. IPEs excel in providing immediate feedback for iterative development, testing, and debugging, making them ideal for fields like data science and AI. However, their typically linear and isolated interface struggles with managing the complexity of larger software projects. Conversely, traditional IDEs support extensive project management and debugging tools suited for complex applications but lack the interactive and incremental nature of IPEs. This paper reports on an ongoing investigation and design of a hybrid environment that combines benefits of IPEs and IDEs and the programming styles they naturally support. Central to our design is a graph structure representing code fragments as nodes and code structure as edges. By considering various types of nodes and relationships (e.g. for representing class membership, execution order, documentation, and dependencies) we can facilitate aspects of both incremental programming (in IPEs) and complexity management (in IDEs). We demonstrate our approach with a prototype, called Incremental Graph Code (IGC), by presenting its architecture and a showcase. We demonstrate IGC's functionality and discuss its potential advantages over existing environments. Key features include advanced code visualization, modular and incremental development, and complexity management. IGC aims to provide a unified, extensible, and flexible development environment that bridges the gap between different styles of programming.

Source code is inherently abstract. While this is necessary to capture the generality of a program, it poses a barrier to understanding and learning to use the underlying concepts. In education, especially in abstract subjects like maths, the use of concrete examples is considered instrumental to the acquisition of knowledge and a frequently explored direction for teaching computational concepts. Besides concreteness, the importance of examples being close to their abstract descriptions as well as the immediacy of feedback has been highlighted. Babylonian programming (BP) is a type of example-based live programming that fulfills all three criteria by introducing concrete values, moving them as close as possible to the code, and updating them immediately in response to changes of either the example or the code. This makes BP a promising tool in education, yet no studies on the suitability of BP in a learning context have been conducted. Hence, we propose to (1.) investigate usability of state-of-the-art BP to minimize the friction of introducing BP in education, and (2.) measure the learning effectiveness and quality of experience of a BP environment in undergraduate software engineering education. For these studies, we will use the Smalltalk-based Babylonian/S as our environment. Besides clearer guidelines on the design of BP and example-based systems in general, we expect to shed light on the qualities that teacher-provided examples need to exhibit and the opportunities for learners to create their own examples during experimentation with unknown concepts.

Multiverse Notebook Shifting Data Scientists to Time Travelers

Computational notebook environments are popular and de facto standard tools for programming in data science, whereas computational notebooks are notorious in software engineering. The criticism there stems from the characteristic of facilitating unrestricted dynamic patching of running programs, which makes exploratory coding quick but the resultant code messy and inconsistent. In this work, we first reveal that dynamic patching is a natural demand rather than a mere bad practice in data science programming on Kaggle. We then develop Multiverse Notebook, a computational notebook engine for time-traveling exploration. It enables users to time-travel to any past state and restart with new code from there under state isolation. We present an approach to efficiently implementing time-traveling exploration. We empirically evaluate Multiverse Notebook on ten real-world tasks from Kaggle. Our experiments show that time-traveling exploration on Multiverse Notebook is reasonably efficient.
