The authors have proposed a direction estimation method of the living-body using array antenna in multi-path environment. However, this method has a problem that takes time as several tens of seconds. In this paper, we present a fast algorithm for estimating living-body direction. The experiment showed that the proposed method works well in estimating living-body direction with high accuracy in multi-path environment even when the observation time is less than conventional method.

Extracting event-related potentials (ERPs) from multichannel EEG recordings remains a challenge due to the poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This paper presents a multivariate statistical model of ERPs by exploiting the existing knowledge about their spatio-temporal properties. In particular, a computationally efficient algorithm is derived for fast model estimation. The algorithm, termed SIM, can be intuitively interpreted as maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio in the source space. Using both simulated and real EEG data, we show that the algorithm achieves excellent estimation performance and substantially outperforms a state-of-the-arts algorithm in classification accuracies in a P300 target detection task. The results demonstrate that the proposed modeling framework offers a powerful tool for exploring the spatio-temporal patterns of ERPs as well as learning spatial filters for decoding brain states.

fast joint estimation for time delay and angle of arrival based on smooth preprocessing with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing

In order to solve the problems of high complexity and absence of adaptability with the joint estimation for time delay (TD) and angle of arrival (AOA) in coherent multipath environments, a fast estimation algorithm based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique is proposed. First, we combine OFDM signal characteristics with array features to obtain extended arrays. Then, we obtain the channel frequency domain response covariance matrices for TD and AOA estimation separately by smoothing preprocessing in the spatial and frequency domains, respectively. Finally, we estimate the TD values by a one-dimensional (1-D) spectral peak search, as well as determine the closed-form solution for AOA by Unitary-ESPRIT. In comparison with previous work, the proposed algorithm not only improves the adaptability in correlated or mixed multipath environments but also significantly reduces the complexity. The simulation results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed joint estimation algorithm.

Parametric localisation in frequency diverse array

The authors present a non-traditional, parametric method for velocity, angle, and range estimation in a frequency diverse array radar. Unlike the traditional beamforming techniques, the proposed scheme transmits an omni-directional sinusoid regardless of the target locations. They propose a simple sampling strategy, which eliminates the need for employing a bank of bandpass filters at the receiver. Under the proposed sampling scheme the received data follows a convenient low rank model. They exploit this model to design a fast and accurate parametric estimation algorithm. Their velocity and range estimation steps employ known spectral analysis techniques. For angle estimation, they propose a new grid-less sparse recovery algorithm. The resulting methods are applicable to any arbitrary array geometry. Furthermore, they propose an efficient method to mitigate jamming. They also provide necessary guidelines to avoid ambiguity and achieve the desired resolution performance. The Cramer-Rao lower bound for the estimation problem is derived. The utility of the proposed method is demonstrated via numerical simulation results.

Low-complexity methods for joint delay and Doppler estimation of unknown wideband signals

A joint time delay and Doppler shift estimation of unknown wideband signals is studied in the sense that the variation of time delay over time and the migration of Doppler shift over signal frequency cannot be neglected. By partitioning the received signals into short time segments, a novel wideband signal model is proposed. Based on this model, the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) of the time delay at the starting point of observation and the Doppler shift at the signal carrier frequency is derived. With well compensation of the migrations of these parameters, the MLE derived could achieve higher estimation accuracy. To lower the computational complexity, a fast estimation algorithm based on the Keystone transform is also presented. After correcting the migrations through the Keystone transform, successive one-dimensional Fourier transform, instead of two-dimensional grids search, is used to achieve coherent processing of the received signals. The Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis for wideband cases is presented and the computational complexity of the proposed algorithms is analysed. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods for wideband cases.

A battery's state of charge (SoC) estimation with accuracy is presented in this paper. Its calculation time is accelerated using online model approach (during operation) with optimal generalization. This novel idea minimizes the initial error of the SoC with the help of artificial neural network (ANN). It is realized by an online learning with offline update parameter estimating model for a battery equivalent circuit. Although degradation of Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery cell is inevitable, accurate estimation of the actual state is needed to extend its life of usage. It is, however, difficult to calculate the parameters by conventional methods, because the parameters are nonlinearly involved in the mathematical notation of the battery impedance and all other variables related with SoC estimation.

To meet the real-time demands of some vector miss distance measurement systems, a fast vector miss distance estimation algorithm is presented in this paper. A small antenna array is used for measuring the movement of a target. Doppler frequency and phase of the signal received by each antenna can be estimated by the proposed fast algorithm. The target motion parameters can be estimated by utilizing the estimated Doppler frequencies and phase differences among the receiving antennas. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed fast algorithm.
