Simultaneous local stabilisation and fault detection for continuous-time T-S fuzzy systems

In this study, a simultaneous local stabilisation and fault detection (FD) problem for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems is investigated. The authors' attention is focused on synthesising an FD observer and an observer-based controller to achieve the objectives of local stabilisation and FD simultaneously. First, by establishing the relationship among the reachable set, the ellipsoid set and the objective area, a new local stabilisation criterion is proposed. The presented criterion guarantees that the state trajectory starting from a given local region can remain in this region even when the system is subject to disturbances and faults. Meanwhile, the FD observer is designed under a mixed $L_\infty /H\_$L infinity/H_ framework such that the residual signal is robust to the persistent disturbance and sensitive to the fault. Different from some existing methods, via the proposed scheme, the state can be restricted into the modelling area so that the non-linear control problem can be addressed by the T-S fuzzy model approach effectively. Additionally, two different methods are utilised in the co-design of the observer and the controller such that the disturbance is not required to be energy-bounded. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by an example.

Event-triggered distributed fault detection over sensor networks in finite-frequency domain

In this study, the event-triggered distributed fault detection problem is investigated for a class of discrete-time uncertain systems in the finite frequency domain. A sensor network is utilised to collect the information of interest, and an event-triggered communication scheme is adopted to alleviate the communication burden. For the addressed problem, a distributed fault detection filter is designed based on the measurement information from its neighbouring nodes and itself by the given topology. In addition, a fashionable index, named as H-infinity performance, is employed in order to simultaneously achieve the residual sensitivity to faults and the robustness against disturbances. By resorting to Euler's formula combined with Lyapunov stability theory, some sufficient conditions are established to satisfy the desired performance over a given finite-frequency domain, and the distributed fault detection filter gains are explicitly characterised by solving a series of linear matrix inequalities. A simulation example is conducted to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed filter design technique.

This study is concerned with the fault detection problem for fractional-order linear systems with disturbances. The erformance indices of fractional-order systems in finite frequency domains are applied to measure the fault sensitivity and the disturbance robustness. A fractional-order fault detection observer is designed to satisfy the two finite frequency performance indices simultaneously. Based on the generalised Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma and the projection lemma, the design conditions are obtained in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Compared with the existing full frequency approaches, the proposed finite frequency one can get better results when the frequency ranges of faults and disturbances are known. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by numerical examples.

An Information-Theoretic Framework for fault detection Evaluation and Design of Optimal Dimensionality Reduction Methods

Data-based fault detection is a growing area with various dimensionality reduction techniques being most commonly used in the manufacturing industries. The evaluation among these methods is generally based on false alarm rate and fault detection rate comparisons given a specific dataset. This article aims to propose a universal criterion for the evaluation of different fault detection approaches. To this end, an information-theoretic framework is presented that imbeds the fault detection problem into an information point of view. The basis for fault detection evaluation is then established in terms of the information contained in the extracted feature space. The developed theory shows that mutual information is not merely another performance index which may be useful in some problem, but rather a universal indicator about how well fault detection methods can perform – the larger the information preserved in the extracted features by a dimensionality reduction technique, the better the fault detection performance. The framework is used to derive an optimal iso-information transformation matrix for dimensionality reduction methods for fault detection, which is demonstrated in the application of principal component analysis and canonical variate analysis to an oscillatory process with random bias. © 2018

This study considers the fault detection problem for a class of switched linear systems when the observer matching condition is not satisfied. Without using decoupling transformations, a residual signal, based on reduced order sliding mode observers, is introduced for the detection of faults which occur on the continuous part of the system. Two numerical simulations on the cascade multicellular converter and on the boost converter illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault detection scheme.

One of the most important challenges in distributed computing is ensuring that services are correct and available despite faults. Recently it has been argued that fault detection can be factored out from computation, and that a generic fault detection service can be a useful abstraction for building distributed systems. However, while fault detection has been extensively studied for crash faults, little is known about detecting more general kinds of faults. This paper explores the power and the inherent costs of generic fault detection in a distributed system. We propose a formal framework that allows us to partition the set of all faults that can possibly occur in a distributed computation into several fault classes. Then we formulate the fault detection problem for a given fault class, and we show that this problem can be solved for only two specific fault classes, namely omission faults and commission faults. Finally, we derive tight lower bounds on the cost of solving the problem for these two classes in asynchronous message-passing systems.

The study paper deals with sensor fault detection problem for a class of linear uncertain systems with bounded disturbances and non-zero constant reference inputs. The sensor faults are modelled as multi-mode, named as fault-free mode and faulty modes. A steady-state-based approach is proposed to detect the sensor faults. The steady-state-based approach can be used to detect lock-in-place sensor faults with arbitrary small magnitudes, which has not been well investigated in the literature. A convergent iterative algorithm based on linear matrix inequalities is given to obtain the solutions. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

In this work we study the fault detection problem using residual generators based upon high gain nonlinear observers in a differential algebraic framework. We analyse the stability of the residual generator when a fault occurs. We also consider two faults types: constant and time-varying faults. It is shown that under some mild conditions over the aforementioned faults the residual is different from zero.
