Software Product Line (SPL) aims to reuse code and other artifacts in order to reduce costs and gain agility. feature oriented programming (FOP) is a technique to develop SPLs that aims to improve the modularity and flexibility of feature code. The basic idea of FOP is to decompose software into smaller pieces, called features, so they can be composed according to the needs of each customer. Currently, Groovy programming language has no tool or framework that supports the implementation of FOP-SPLs. Groovy is a programming language that has been growing in popularity in recent years. Given this scenario, this work proposes and evaluates G4FOP, a light way to develop SPLs using Groovy. G4FOP extends featureHouse which is a framework for software composition and FOP. A preliminary evaluation shows that G4FOP covers Groovy grammar. We also demonstrate by an example that G4FOP is suitable to develop SPLs. G4FOP is currently integrated to the official featureHouse repository.

Recently, hardware agile design methods have been developed to improve the design productivity. However, the modeling methods hinder further design productivity improvements. In this paper, we propose and implement a microprocessor agile design method using feature oriented programming technology to improve design productivity. In this method, designs could be uniquely partitioned and constructed incrementally to explore various functional design features flexibly and efficiently. The key techniques to improve design productivity are flexible modeling extension and on-the-fly feature composing mechanisms. The evaluations on RISC-V and OR1200 CPU pipelines show the effectiveness of the proposed method on duplicate codes reduction and flexible feature composing while avoiding design resource overheads.

Aligning the software process and the documentation process is a recipe for having both software and documentation in synchrony where changes in software seamlessly ripple along its documentation counterpart. This paper focuses on documentation for Software Product Lines (SPLs). A SPL is not intended to build one application, but a number of them: a product family. In contrast to single-software product development, SPL development is based on the idea that the distinct products of the family share a significant amount of assets. This forces a change in the software process. Likewise, software documentation development should now mimic their code counterpart: product documentation should also be produced out of a common set of assets. Specifically, the paper shows how DITA process and documents are recasted using a feature-oriented approach, a realization mechanism for SPLs. In so doing, documentation artifacts are produced at the same pace and using similar variability mechanisms that those used for code artifacts. This accounts for three main advantages: uniformity, separation of concerns, and timely and accurate delivery of the documentation.

Common software design practices use object-oriented (OO) frameworks that structure software in terms of objects, classes, and packages;designers then create programs by inheritance and composition of classes and objects. Operational Software Components for Advanced Robotics (OSCAR) is one such framework for robot control software with abstractions for generalized kinematics, dynamics, performance criteria, decision making, and hardware interfacing. Even with OSCAR, writing new programs still requires a significant amount of manual labor. feature-oriented programming (FOP) is method for software design that models and specifies programs in terms of features, where a feature encapsulates the common design decisions that occur in a domain. A set of features then forms a domain model for a Product Line Architecture. Product variants in this product line can then he generated from a declarative specification. FOP and related technologies are emerging software engineering techniques for automatically generating programs. Our research applies FOP to robot controller software. As an example, the domain of hardware interfacing is analyzed and 41 features identified. A GUI for specifying and generating programs is presented as well. Analysis of features shows 200 possible different programs could be generated.

The widespread use of mobile devices and the heterogeneity of the users involve changes for usability evaluating of mobile applications. It is important to have methodologies and tools to perform usability specific studies for this type of applications in which the context of use is constantly changing. It is necessary that the usability tests are transparent for the user, usability and context data are automatically collected, the test code are not intrusive in the tested application and the tests support the variability of the devices. To achieve the above features, this article presents a framework called FUsAM (Framework of Usability for Mobile Applications) which is extensible and can generate and integrate usability testing in mobile applications. The design and implementation approach is based on Software Product Line (SPL) combined with features oriented programming (FOP) and Aspect oriented programming (AOP). A case study is also presented to prove the functionality.

Framework based software tends to get bloated by accumulating optional features (or concerns) just-in-case they are needed. The good news is that such feature bloat need not always cause runtime execution bloat. The bad news is that often enough, only a few statements from an optional concern may cause execution bloat that may result in as much as 50% runtime overhead. We present a novel technique to analyze the connection between optional concerns and the potential sources of execution bloat induced by them. Our analysis automatically answers questions such as (1) whether a given set of optional concerns could lead to execution bloat and (2) which particular statements are the likely sources of bloat when those concerns are not required. The technique combines coarse grain concern input from an external source with a fine-grained static analysis. Our experimental evaluation highlights the effectiveness of such concern augmented program analysis in execution bloat assessment of ten programs.
