feature-based modeling for variable fractal geometry design integrated into CAD system

Fractal geometry has been widely applied in computer graphics to visually represent natural objects, which cannot be easily represented by Euclidean geometry. Other than visual representation, parametric fractal-like CAD models have been used in industry for the design and manufacture of products with self-similarity geometric features. However, contemporary CAD systems cannot construct CAD fractal models efficiently, as most CAD fractal models are still built manually by designers. The construction and modifications for such CAD fractal models are tedious and *** paper aims to build and modify CAD fractal models more efficiently in CAD systems. A method for automatically modeling parametric fractal-like geometry objects in CAD systems is proposed. feature-based modeling methods have been applied for realizing algorithm-based CAD fractal model generation. A new type of feature, called CAD fractal feature is proposed and implemented to bridge the gap between CAD and fractal geometry. The fractal-like CAD model is constructed iteratively with a dynamic generator for each iteration cycle. Design parameters are extracted as inputs for dynamic fractal generators, which allows users to define, parameterize, generate and edit a fractal design with variable parameters. The parameters of the fractal generator can also take different values for different model construction iterations, which makes the generated models not necessarily to be strictly fractal but can also be fractal-like. The iterative generation method (IGM) is proposed as a built-in method in a CAD fractal feature for modeling complex but self-similar geometric models in an objected-oriented approach with high efficiency and sufficient design flexibility. As a result, designers do not need advanced knowledge of fractal geometry to build and modify CAD models with self-similar features. Industrial process modeling is currently undergoing a fundamental transformation, leading towards interconnected close-loop twins of models, i.e., the parametrically-controlled real-world physics model, and its corresponding digitalized virtual system model. Between these models, a highly time-sensitive mutual validation mechanism and a coherent and consistent control strategy are applied, which demand complex virtual-and-real world model-based information mapping and synchronization. Thus, this research proposes a semantic conceptual framework for industrial process modeling in the context of digital twins. based on a hierarchical structure of digital twins, this framework modularizes the modeling process in terms of the semantic information modules of physics in the real-world phenomena, and clarifies inter-module associations and near-real-time data transmission coupled with virtual analysis in CAE environment so that the time-sensitive phenomenon information objects distributed on virtually-separated sub-level physics models can be supported for representing the real-world process comprehensively. Advanced feature concept is adopted to construct the digital models as the basic compositions of any virtual industrial process. The related feature definitions are extended in this work so that the common characteristics in the concept of digital twins could be generically and concisely represented. To validate the modeling method, the digital model of a prototyped High-velocity Oxygen-fuel (HVOF) coating process system was constructed as the case study. The data from the nozzle trajectory, the flame, and the in-flight particle behavior, and the transient thermal performance of the coating layer and substrate were synchronously incorporated for simulating the transient phenomena of the substrate component temperature and coating thickness distribution on the substrate surface. feature-based modeling approach has been widely utilized in various applications of product and process engineering. Initially, it was introduced for geometry representation in computer-aided design (CAD) utilities. With further developments in computer-aided engineering, process planning, and manufacturing, feature-based modeling gained higher importance and role for the integration of these systems. Despite considerable efforts to gain domain-neutral definition for features, they have been mostly defined for specific applications that restrict their reusability for different systems. Recent progress in the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, in addition to additive and hybrid manufacturing techniques, has realized a new manufacturing paradigm called Social Manufacturing which needs significant cross-domain interactions and intensifies the demand for feature interoperability. In this paper, after presenting a brief history of the feature-based modeling approach and its development challenges, we focus on finding the approaches to tackle feature interoperability issues and investigate the role of features in Model-based Definition (MBD) and the Social Manufacturing paradigm. Also, future research pathways to develop the feature-based modeling approach is presented.

Despite various attempts, the very notion of feature remains ambiguous and no promising approach has been proposed to disambiguate and possibly unify its various meanings under a common framework. As a consequence, feature-based models are tuned on specific applications, are hardly reusable across systems, and are scarcely transparent for human comprehension. The purpose of this paper is to present an ontological characterization of features that can act as backbone conceptual and computational structure to represent the meaning of feature classes in a clear manner. For this goal, the ontology formalizes the most general and fundamental properties that all features are required to satisfy. Machine learning techniques have been proposed in the literature for the modeling of photonic devices. In this paper, a modeling technique based on system identification, feature extraction, and machine learning methods is proposed for the design of photonic devices. Design features of interest are extracted based on a system identification step that uses a few samples of the electromagnetic device response. This system identification step allows saving computational resources significantly while collecting the data needed for the further machine learning step. modeling design features instead of the wavelength-dependent device response as a function of the design parameters allows compacting the output space of interest in neural networks and reducing related model complexity issues. These features can be modeled as a function of design parameters by means of neural networks. The generated neural networks are of very limited complexity. Design features represent very valuable and meaningful information for designers. Numerical results successfully validate the proposed technique.

A simple technique for accurate and low-cost modeling of microwave structures is presented. Our approach utilizes response surface approximation at the level of suitably selected response features rather than direct approximation of frequency responses (e. g., S-parameters) of the structure of interest. By exploiting the fact that dependence of the features on designable parameters is much less nonlinear than similar dependence for original responses, accurate quasi-global surrogates can be constructed at a fraction of computational cost necessary by conventional modeling techniques. Numerical verification involving two micros trip filters is provided.

Validation of modified feature-based 3D modeling of scoliotic spine

Three out of every 100 people in this world have some form of scoliosis. A doctor would suggest surgery if scoliosis is severe in certain conditions to prevent it from getting worse. The deformity of spine can be visualized well in 3D rather than in 2D as it is time-consuming to evaluate the degree of deformity. CATIA V5 is used to develop feature-based modeling. The angles of vertebrae orientation from biplanar X-rays are fed into the CATIA interface which forms the orientation of the 3D spine model. The feature-based model is modified using the morpho-realistic model for increasing the accuracy. The validation procedure for the feature-based model is divided into quantitative and qualitative analysis. In quantitative analysis, the One Sided Hausdorff Distance (OSHD), Average Surface Distance (ASD), Cobb angle and Axial Vertebral Rotation (AVR) metrics are obtained for inter-observer variability and intra-observer variability. In qualitative analysis, the model is projected along the frontal and lateral radiographs and compared with reference radiographs. The accuracy of the model can be estimated by the uncertainty in these parameters. The mean surface model reconstruction errors were found to be smaller than 1.5 mm in comparing cadaver Computed Tomography (CT) scan as well as for the 10 cases including inter-observer and intra-observer variability. The average differences for AVR and Cobb angle were less than 2 30a;. The modified feature-based 3D modeling allows for true 3D pre-operative planning which helps the doctor for better treatment with much less time.

During the Shang Dynasty of China, Zhen, who presided over sacrificial rituals and made predictions about the future, is one of the oldest prophets in human history. People tend to visualize the Zhen just as they do modern humans. Since the history of Zhen ceased many centuries ago, it may be difficult to recall its characters and to visualize the face and the cloth. Hence, portrait modeling and animation design, especially the modeling design based on the costumes, hairstyles and movements of characters in ancient historical stories grows very important for 3D human modeling. This paper proposes a feature-based modeling method of historical figures. Through analyzing the characteristics of historical figures from multiple angles such as hairstyles, clothing, and movements, combined with virtual portrait 3D modeling technology and OpenGL drawing technology, a virtual model has been designed for Zhen. The model has also been tested in virtual portrait 3D model platform (VPMP) to evaluate the pixel displacement error. This method provides ideas for the construction of other historical figures, and also provides opportunities for exploration and learning for a better understanding of Shang Dynasty.

Traditional analytical methods are approximate and need to be validated when it comes to predict the tensional behavior of thread coupling. Numerical finite element simulations help engineers come up with the optimum design, although the latter depends on the constraints and load conditions of the thread couplings which are often variable during the system functioning. The present work illustrates a new method based on Radial Basis Functions Mesh Morphing formulation to optimize the stress concentration in thread couplings which is subject to variable loads and constraints. In particular, thread root and fillet under-head drawings for metric ISO thread, which are the most commonly used thread connection, are optimized with Radial Basis Functions Mesh Morphing. In metric ISO threaded connection, the root shape and the fillet under the head are circular, and from shape optimization for minimum stress concentration it is well known that the circular shape becomes seldom optimal. The study is carried out to enhance the stress concentration factor with a simple geometric parameterization using two design variables. Radial Basis Functions Mesh Morphing formulation, performed with a simple geometric parameterization, has allowed to obtain a stress reduction of up to 12%;some similarities are found in the optimized designs leading to the proposal of a new standard. The reductions in the stress are achieved by rather simple changes made to the cutting tool. © 2021, The Author(s).
