Laryngoscopes are used as diagnostic devices for throat inspection or as an aid to intubation. Their blade must be geometrically compatible with patients’ anatomy to provide a good view to doctors with minimal discomfort to patients. For this reason, this paper was aimed to investigate the feasibility of producing customized blades. The customizable blade model was developed following a feature-based approach with eight morphological parameters. The thickness of such a blade was determined through numerical simulations of ISO certification tests, where the finite element mesh was obtained by morphing a ‘standard’ mesh. The following procedure was applied: the model was built from the selected parameters;the blade was tested in silico;finally, the blade was produced by additive manufacturing with an innovative biodegradable material (Hemp Bio-Plastic® -HBP-) claimed to feature superior mechanical properties. The procedure evidenced that the mechanical properties of current biodegradable materials are unsuitable for the application unless the certification norm is revised, as it is expected. © 2021, The Author(s).

Divergent trinocular vision observers design for extended Kalman filter robot state estimation

Here, we report the design of two deterministic observers that exploit the capabilities of a home-made divergent trinocular visual sensor to sense depth data. The three-dimensional key points that the observers can measure are triangulated for visual odometry and estimated by an extended Kalman filter. This work deals with a four-wheel-drive mobile robot with four passive suspensions. The direct and inverse kinematic solutions are deduced and used for the updating and prediction models of the extended Kalman filter as feedback for the robot's position controller. The state-estimation visual odometry results were compared with the robot's dead-reckoning kinematics, and both are combined as a recursive position controller. One observer model design is based on the analytical geometric multi-view approach. The other observer model has fundamentals on multi-view lateral optical flow, which was reformulated as nonspatial-temporal and is modeled by an exponential function. This work presents the analytical deductions of the models and formulations. Experimental validation deals with five main aspects: multi-view correction, a geometric observer for range measurement, an optical flow observer for range measurement, dead-reckoning and visual odometry. Furthermore, comparison of positioning includes a four-wheel odometer, deterministic visual observers and the observer-extended Kalman filter, compared with a vision-based global reference localization system.

An innovative eco-design approach based on integration of LCA, CAD\CAE and optimization tools, and its implementation perspectives

This study aims to develop an innovative eco-design approach by integrating modules of LCA, CAD\CAE and optimization to effectively include environmental considerations in product design. A life cycle modeling approach based on feature mapping scheme between product, operation and inventory has been employed to address the discrepancy in the principles of the utilized methodological approaches of LCA and CAD/CAE and enable data transformation between CAD/CAE and LCA models. In addition, by the feature-based life cycle modeling, product and process design parameters are then correlated to environmental impact proxy with explicit relationships, allowing designers to keep track of and optimize design changes that taking effect on both environmental and functional performance. Then, an integrated eco-design model consisted of a CAD-based geometric modeling module, a CAE-based functional performance analysis module, a feature-LCA-based eco-assessment module, and an eco-optimization module has been developed by 'sight to realize automated procedures of low-environmental impact design. The proposed eco-design approach is expected to contribute to development of tools for efficient and practicable LCA during design and computer-aided eco-optimization with a complete view of the product life cycle. feature-based intelligent system for steam simulation using computational fluid dynamics

In the development of products involving fluids, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been increasingly applied to investigate the flow associated with various product operating conditions or product designs. The batch simulation is usually conducted when CFD is heavily used, which is not able to respond to the changes in flow regime when the fluid domain changes. In order to overcome this defect, a rule-based intelligent CFD simulation system for steam simulation is proposed to analyze the specific product design and generate the corresponding robust simulation model with accurate results. The rules used in the system are based on physical knowledge and CFD best practices which make this system easy to be applied in other application scenarios by changing the relevant knowledge base. Fluid physics features and dynamic physics features are used to model the intelligent functions of the system. Incorporating CAE boundary features, the CFD analysis view is fulfilled, which maintains the information consistency in a multi-view feature modeling environment. The prototype software tool is developed by Python 3 with separated logics and settings. The effectiveness of the proposed system is proven by the case study of a disk-type gate valve and a pipe reducer in a piping system.

The passenger airbag (PAB) requires a large volume and fast deployment because of the large distance between the dashboard and the passenger. And various shapes and sizes of the PAB are required depending on the type of vehicle. However, since the PAB modeling process for each design change is complicated and time consuming, the design parameters of the PAB could not be well investigated. In this study, a unique feature-based CAD system has been proposed that easily constructs PAB CAD model and then generates PAB FE model for collision analysis. Main keypoints and widths of PAB that determine the shape and size have been extracted by analyzing the geometric-feature of airbag. The PAB CAD model can be easily constructed by inputting keypoints and widths information. Then, from the constructed PAB CAD model, the PAB FE model is automatically generated. Finally, the generated PAB FE model can be directly employed for collision analysis, thereby reducing the modeling time of the PAB and enabling efficient parametric studies on design.

feature-based approaches have been profusely used in the last decades to incorporate domain-specific knowledge in the design and development of technical systems that, according to the new Concurrent Engineering approaches, involves not only the definition of the product, but also of the required manufacturing/inspection/assembly process and the corresponding production system. Although the ability of feature-based modeling to ease and integrate knowledge intensive processes has always been recognised, in practise the different feature-based modeling proposals are strongly dependent on the domain and on the development stage of the solution (conceptual, detailed, etc.). On the other hand, inspection process planning, including the design and selection of the technical system to realize the dimensional and geometrical verification of the manufactured artefacts, has been traditionally considered separately from the rest of the manufacturing process planning, and even also from the product functional specification tasks. In this work, a feature-based framework for inspection process planning, based on a similar approach to the one applied in GD&T (Geometrical Dimensioning & Tolerancing) specification, analysis and validation of product artefacts, is presented. With this work, the proposed framework and feature concept ability to model interaction components belonging to both the product and the inspection system (inspection solution) is proved. Moreover, to facilitate the Collaborative and Integrated Development of Product-Process-Resource, the Inspection feature has been conceived as a specialization of a generic feature previously proposed by the authors.

Integration of Life Cycle Assessment with computer-aided product development by a feature-based approach

This paper aims to develop approaches for the integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with computer aided product development so as to enhance the environment-friendly product design and manufacturing. A feature-based life cycle modeling approach is proposed to address life cycle representation, retrieval and integration of valuable data from current computer aided engineering tools, and formulation of relations between various product and process design factors and product environmental impact indicators for sustainability improvement analysis. Also, the framework of software integration is proposed for approach realization. Manufacturing-integrated product solutions: Design support between product function and manufacturing processes

With the help of new design tools, manufacturing-integrated solutions can be generated that concurrently consider function and process. based on the design pattern matrix, solution elements can be developed that realize the product function by systematically utilizing manufacturing-induced properties. The developed manufacturing-integrated product solutions are refined using computer-aided methods (feature-based modeling and information modeling). A product embodiment is generated that is specifically tailored to the chosen manufacturing technology. An integrated information model allows the introduced tools to be used throughout the entire development process. The example of a linear flow split snap-fit fastening illustrates how the tools beneficially interact and realize manufacturing potential, resulting in an innovative product design.

Computationally feasible narrow-band antenna modeling using response features

Accurate and low-cost models of input characteristics are of primary importance from the point of view of efficient design of antenna structures. Yet, the modeling problem is difficult because reflection responses are highly nonlinear functions of frequency and change considerably when adjusting antenna dimensions. Conventional approximation-based models require massive datasets and often fail to provide required accuracy. This work demonstrates a possibility of dramatic reduction of the number of training samples, which is achieved by reformulating the modeling problem in a space of appropriately defined response features. The key factor is that dependence of feature point coordinates (both frequency and level) on antenna dimensions is less nonlinear than for the standard responses (S-parameters vs. frequency). Our methodology permits construction of reliable surrogates using much smaller datasets than those required by conventional approaches. Experimental validation indicates that our models provide accuracy that is sufficient for practical antenna design.
