Die design and finite-element analysis for the hot forging of automotive wheel frames made of aluminium alloy

This study systematically analysed and optimised the hot-forging process of wheel rims made of aluminium 6061 alloy, with the objective being to achieve the desired rim shape, dimensions, grain refinement, and strength. First, friction coefficients were determined through the hot ring compression test, and the displacement and load variations of specimens were analysed at temperatures of 200 degrees C, 300 degrees C, and 450 degrees C to calculate plastic flow stress. The data obtained in these steps were then applied in finite-element simulations of aluminium alloy rims to predict the influence of forging load, die stress, temperature, and forming speed on formability and product quality. This study thoroughly investigated the effects of friction on rim formation under various billet aspect ratios, forging speeds, and temperatures. Die design and manufacturing were conducted using optimal forming parameters, and hot-forging experiments were performed using graphite as a lubricant to assess the effects of forming temperature and load curves on product dimensions and forging force. A comparison between experimental and simulation results indicated a high degree of accuracy in predicting product dimensions;thus, the adopted simulation method can be employed for process design and equipment selection. Finally, metallographic observations and hardness tests were conducted to analyse grain structure and hardness distribution across different regions of the fabricated rims;these steps allowed examination of the effectiveness of the obtained optimised forging parameters in enhancing formability and quality. The results of this study serve as a reference for advancing hot-forging techniques for aluminium alloy wheel rims.

Comparative study regarding the stability of a proximal ulnar stump with or without distal oblique bundle reconstruction during the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure: a finite-element analysis

Background The most common postoperative complication of the Sauv & eacute;-Kapandji (S-K) procedure is proximal ulnar stump instability. The distal oblique bundle (DOB) is a stable tissue used to stabilize the distal radioulnar joint. This study created finite-element models of the distal oblique bundle (DOB) to determine its effect on the proximal ulnar stump instability encountered during the Sauv & eacute;-Kapandji *** We hypothesized that a proximal ulnar stump with distal oblique bundle reconstruction would provide greater stability than a proximal ulnar stump without distal oblique bundle *** Detailed CT imaging data acquired from a pathological specimen of the wrist joint were imported into a finite-element analysis software package, and the regions of interest, including bone, cartilage, ligaments and tendons, were extracted to create a 3-dimensional model. The volar/dorsal and medial/lateral displacements of the proximal ulnar stump and the stress changes exhibited by the bone and distal oblique bundle tendon were measured with and without DOB reconstruction under 60 degrees pronation, neutrality, and 60 degrees *** When utilizing DOB reconstruction, the displacement of the radius relative to the proximal ulna stump was approximately 17.89 mm in the neutral position. The bone stress values corresponding to the neutral position, 60 degrees pronation and 60 degrees pronation were 1.01, 18.32 and 14.69 MPa, respectively. The stress peaks of the DOB tendon structure corresponding to the neutral position, 60 degrees pronation and 60 degrees pronation were 0.07 MPa, 2.21 and 1.55 MPa, respectively. Without DOB reconstruction, the displacement of the radius relative to the proximal ulna stump was approximately 18.05 mm in the neutral position. Objective: This study aimed to identify the optimal position for the femoral neck system (FNS) device when fixing Pauwels III #NOF, by analyzing the mechanical stability and stress distribution of FNS at different screw placement positions for the fixation of Pauwels III femoral neck fractures. Methods: We employed finite element analysis to create a 3D model of a Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture. Six models were designed, each with varied FNS screw placement positions. Axial stresses of 600 N, 1200 N, and 1800 N were applied to simulate physiological loads during different activities: standing on two legs, standing on one leg, and walking. The mechanical properties of these screw placements were assessed by comparing stress distribution, displacement, and fracture stability across models under varying load conditions. Results: Model 1, with the power rod aligned along the femoral neck axis, showed the best stability, with 42.40 % lower maximum VMS and 18.49 % less femoral displacement, compared to the worst model. Displacement of the internal fixation and fracture surface decreased by 21.72 % and 19.16 %, respectively. It also had superior results for internal fixation VMS and fracture surface compressive stress. Model 2, with the head screw centered axially, demonstrated good stability but had higher stress concentrations under 1800 N load. The displacement of the fracture surface and femur in model 2 increased by 18.37 % and 17.26 %, respectively, compared to model 1. Models 5 and 6, with the FNS nail near the lateral femoral cortex, showed significant stress concentrations, with compressive and shear forces rising by about 33 %. Model 5 ' s maximum VMS increased by 46.68 %, and model 6 ' s maximum compressive stress of the fracture surface increased by 46.37 %, compared to model 1. In this paper, a transient dynamic finite-element analysis was carried out to investigate the mechanics of diamond turning of an Al6061/'SiCp metal-matrix composite (MMC). To achieve closer approximations, 8-noded isoparametric elements have been chosen and employed. The powerful skyline procedure was used for storing the global stiffness matrix in conjunction with LDLT for solving simultaneous equations. The possible four encounters of the tool with the materials in the MMCs have been studied in detail. A new chip-separation criterion suggested in the recent literature has been adopted for the present analysis. The normal and shear stresses are analyzed for all four cases. It has been found that the theoretical findings are consistent with the experimental results and their significance is discussed in the paper. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. In a nematic solid, wherein liquid crystal molecules are incorporated into polymeric chains, the chromophore phase is projected onto the polymer conformation, changing the stress-free configuration metric. Stimulated actuation cannot be separated from the structure itself, since the mesoscopic polymer properties dictate the degree and type of shape change. In this research, we focused on self-deforming device programming, inspired by recent optical techniques, to pattern nontrivial alignment textures and induce exotic strain fields on specimens. A finite-element framework incorporating a light-thermo-order coupled constitutive relation and geometric nonlinearities was utilized to compute mechanical deformations for given external stimuli. The distortion of planar strips into various exotic 3D shapes was simulated, and disclination-defect-like liquid crystal texture topographies with different defect strengths produced various many-poled shapes upon irradiation, as observed experimentally. The effects of the boundary conditions and geometric nonlinearities were also examined, exemplifying the need for a comprehensive finite-element-based framework. The same method was applied to textures naturally emerging due to static distortion, and the effects of the prescribed inhomogeneities on the overall deformations, which is the basis of inverse design, were observed. Furthermore, we analyzed the local Poisson-effect-induced instability resulting from inscribing a hedgehog disclination texture onto a solid;the onset of buckling-like deformations was observed energetically, and the relations between this onset and other physical properties were elucidated to enable microstate design while maintaining structural stability. These results will facilitate the development and comprehension of the mechanisms of remotely light-controlled self-assembly and propulsion systems that may soon be realized.

The finite-element analysis of conducting waveguides is modified to replace two conducting walls by two phase-shift walls. This simulates an infinite periodically fed parallel-plate type structure, which serves as a feed for an infinite linear phased array. The cutoff wavelengths and field structure of the lower modes are calculated for different geometries and phase shifts. A mode splitting effect is observed for phase shifts larger than π.

A fundamental, two-dimensional finite-element analysis (FEA) of coated surfaces in rolling contact is presented with detailed listing of all modelling steps. A large number of basic results from a parametric study has been derived, focusing on the stress analysis and the effect of coatings on the life expectancy of coated surfaces, without actually getting into the ambiguities of fatigue life evaluation. Parameters included in the study are the metallic coating thickness (from zero to 50 mu m) and elastic modulus (from 180 to 240 GPa), the Coulomb friction coefficient (0, 0.05, and 0.10) and the endurance limit of the coated Substrate. A generalization involves the application of traction to Simulate driving or driven wheels. The effect of that traction on the stress results is thoroughly examined. The set of results, summarized in a figure with nine diagrams, assists the quick selection of the optimum parameter values for maximizing coating performance and minimizing the risk of contact fatigue within the design limits used in the study. The model is realistic in that it does not use idealized load distributions in the rolling contact but actual geometrical solids in contact under normal operating conditions, letting the FEA software resolve the loads and stresses, which are subsequently validated.

The softening process as observed in fissured, overconsolidated clays and mudstones is discussed in detail. Softening is classified into internal and external processes. The effect of softening is to decrease the shear strength of a material and its dilatant characteristics. This shear strength reduction is represented as a lowering of the failure envelope and a reduction in the degree of nonlinearity at low stress levels. There are some restrictions related to stress paths that affect the initiation of softening. The softening process may be formulated in terms of a time-dependent yield surface, and the finite-element method can be extended to analyze softening effects. A cut slope is analyzed as an example. The development with time of deformations is traced up to the collapse of the slope. This example contains the essentials to portray the role of the mechanism of softening. A distinction can be made between time-dependent deformation due to softening and those associated with conventional creep mechanisms.

Experimental results showed that ASTM D 638 Type IV flat tension specimens, made of a Nylon-11 matrix containing a large volume concentration of Nd-Fe-B particulates, failed at a location where the straight gage section of the specimen ends and the curved transition region begins. The stress distribution in this specimen was analyzed using the finite-element method, and it was found that there is a stress concentration at this location. The stress distributions in tension specimens with both single- and double-arc transition regions were analyzed and stress concentration factors were calculated. A linear relationship between the magnitude of the stress concentration factor and the ratio of the width in the gage section and the arc radius of the transition region is identified. This study shows that it is possible to reduce the magnitude of the stress concentration factor for the ASTM D 638 Type IV flat tension specimen by redesigning the specimen geometry without changing its overall size.

The dual-tube self-centering buckling-restrained brace (SC-BRB) with pretensioned basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) composite tendons is a novel bracing system that consists of an energy-dissipative BRB and self-centering system that is used to overcome the residual drift. In this study, a finite-element model of the dual-tube SC-BRB is constructed to analyze its hysteretic characteristics. By analyzing and comparing the model of the BRB and the self-centering system, respectively, the accuracy of the model parameters, such as material, contact, and constraint, was verified. The tube length tolerance was introduced to the model of the SC-BRB, which effectively reduced the initial stiffness of the brace and corresponded with the test results. Based on the finite-element model of the SC-BRB, the influence of four parameters, including the material of the pretension tendons, initial pretension force, area of the pretension tendons, and core plates, on the hysteretic performance of the brace is discussed. This paper improved the configuration of the SC-BRB by adding a rubber cushion between the end plate and tubes. The finite-element analysis results indicated that the rubber cushion could not only decrease the initial stiffness of the brace but also reduce the influence of the tube length tolerance on the initial stiffness of the brace.
