focal plane array (FPA) detector has characteristics of low cost, operating at room temperature, compatibility with the silicon CMOS technology and high detecting performance, therefore it becomes a hot spot in infrared (IR) or terahertz (THz) detect field recently. However, the tradition structure of micro-bolometer has the conflict of the pixel size and thermal performance. In order to improve the detecting performance of small pixel size bolometer, high fill factor and low thermal conductance design should be considered. In IR detecting, double layers structure is an efficient method to improve the absorption of micro-bolometer and reduce thermal conductance. The three dimension model of small size micro-bolometer was built in this article. The thermal and mechanical characters of those models were simulated and optimized, and finally the double layer structure micro-bolometer was fabricated with multifarious semiconductor recipes on the readout integrated chip wafer. For THz detecting, to improve the detecting performance, different dimension THz detectors based on micro-bridge structure were designed and fabricated to get optimizing micro-bolometer parameters from the test results of membrane deformation. A nanostructured titanium thin film absorber is integrated in the micro-bridge structure of the VOx micro-bolometer to enhance the absorption of THz radiation. Continuous-wave THz detection and imaging are demonstrated with a 2.52 THz far infrared CO2 laser and fabricated 320x240 vanadium oxide micro-bolometer focal plane array with optimized cell structure. With this detecting system, THz imaging of metal concealed in wiping cloth and envelope is demonstrated.

Microplastics (MPs) and textile cellulose are globally pervasive pollutants in freshwater. In-situ studies assessing the ingestion of MPs by freshwater meiofauna are few. Here, we evaluated MP and textile cellulose ingestion by some meiofaunal taxa and functional guilds of a first-order stream in the city of Florence (Italy) by using a tandem microscopy approach (fluorescence microscopy and mu FTIR). The study targeted five taxa (nematodes, oligochaetes, copepods, ephemeropterans and chironomids), three feeding (scrapers, deposit-feeders, and predators), and three locomotion (crawlers, burrowers, and swimmers) guilds. Fluorescent particles related to both MPs and textile cellulose resulted in high numbers in all taxa and functional guilds. We found the highest number of particles in nematodes (5200 particles/ind.) and deposit-feeders (1693 particles/ind.). Oligochaetes and chironomids (burrowers) ingested the largest particles (medium length: 28 and 48 mu m, respectively), whereas deposit-feeders ingested larger particles (medium length: 26 mu m) than scrapers and predators. Pellets were abundant in all taxa, except for Chironomidae. Textile cellulose fibers were present in all taxa and func-tional guilds, while MP polymers (EVA, PET, PA, PE, PE-PP) differed among taxa and functional guilds. In detail: EVA and PET particles were found only in chironomids, PE particles occurred in chironomids, copepods and ephemeropterans, PA particles were found in all taxa except in nematodes, whereas particles made of PE-PP blend occurred in oligochaetes and copepods. Burrowers and deposit-feeders ingested EVA, PET, PA, PE and PE-PP, while crawlers and scrapers ingested PE and PA. Swimmers and predators ingested PE, PA and PE-PP. Our findings suggest a pervasive level of plastic and textile cellulose pollution consistent with an urban stream which propagates in the meiofaunal assemblage of the stream ecosystem.

S-Cam is a cryogenic camera for ground based astronomy designed around a 6x6 array of Ta-Al Superconducting Tunnel Junctions (STJs). The camera has been conceived as a technology demonstrator;aiming to prove the potential of this new generation of single photon counting detectors at a ground-based telescope as a possible precursor to space based applications. Following a first test campaign at the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain), an improved version of the camera (S-Cam 2) has been developed and tested. In this paper we provide an overview of the latest camera performance, a description of the up-dated S-Cam 2 system and a summary of the main test results. An example of the novel astronomical data obtained during the second test campaign conducted in December 1999 are also shortly described.

The development of superconducting tunnel junction detector arrays has now reached a stage where practical applications in X-ray astrophysics can be considered. The arrays are based on tantalum devices, with operating temperatures of about 0.4 K. The energy resolution of these detectors is limited by Fano and tunnel noise to about 3 eV at 1 keV. The first results from a 6x6, tantalum based array are presented. These medium sized arrays have good energy resolution (2.5 and 6.8 eV at 270 and 1000 eV respectively) and adequate absorption efficiency (of order 80% and 30% at 500 and 1000 eV respectively). The possibility to operate and read out simultaneously more than one channel has been demonstrated. The uniformity of the array elements both in charge output and energy resolution is good, with the overall responsivity across the array varying by less than 5%. The energy resolution at X-ray energies is dominated by spatial non-uniformities in the individual pixel response. Such a performance allows us now to consider the development of a X-ray cryogenic camera based on STJ detectors. Provided the field coverage of these cameras can be extended through the development of larger format detector arrays, they have the potential to form a major basis for astrophysics instrumentation in the next century.

The development of an optical camera based on superconducting tunnel junctions has now reached a stage where practical applications in optical or UV astronomy can be considered. A prototype cryogenic camera (named S-Cam) has been developed, based on a high quantum efficiency 6x6 detector array of tantalum Josephson junctions, and operating at a temperature of about 0.4 K. This paper describes the general characteristics of the camera, sensitive in the waveband from 350 to 700 nm and designed to be installed in 1998 at the Nasmyth focus of the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, Spain. In addition to the performance of the overall system, the preliminary detector unit test results will also be presented. The present S-Cam system performance is discussed in view of future versions of the camera. Provided the field coverage of these cameras can be extended through the development of larger format detector arrays and adequate read-out electronics, they have the potential to provide a significant additional tool for optical and UV astronomy in the next century.

Near-infrared spectroscopy is a sensitive, noninvasive method for chemical analyses, and its integration with imaging technologies represents a potent tool for the study of a wide range of materials. In this communication the use of an indium antimonide (InSb) multichannel imaging detector for near-infrared absorption spectroscopic microscopy is described. In particular, a 128 x 128 pixel InSb staring array camera has been combined with a refractive optical microscope and an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) to display chemically discriminative, spatially resolved, vibrational spectroscopic images of biological and polymeric systems. AOTFs are computer-controlled bandpass filters that provide high speed, random wavelength access, wide spectral coverage, and high spectral resolution. Although AOTFs inherently have a wide range of spectroscopic applications, we apply this technology to NIR absorption microscopy between 1 and 2.5 mum. The spectral interval is well matched to the optical characteristics of both the NIR refractive microscope and the AOTF, thereby providing near-diffraction-limited performance with a practical spatial resolution of 1 to 2 mum. Design principles of this novel instrumentation and representative applications of the technique are presented for various model systems.
