According to the local characteristics of image similarity and transitivity, self-similarity and scale invariance characteristic of fractal characteristics, use fractal coding as the characteristic of similarity evaluation criteria, search internal image blocks and use the low resolution image analogy fusion in a single image to reconstruct a high resolution image information blocks, implement super-resolution enhancement based on fractal coding. The experimental results show that the fractal coding method can keep the image details better, the reconstruction error is smaller, is better than the bilinear interpolation and bicubic interpolation method.

fractal based compression technique has a very good performance in terms of achieving a high compression ratio and producing a good quality of image/picture. fractal coding technique is limited because of large number of computation is required for searching best possible domain blocks, number of comparisons and transformations applied on each domain blocks present in domain pool. This paper discusses a quadtree based Extended Weighted Finite Automata (EWFA) coding approach for individual frame coding i.e. similar to the intraframe coding. In this approach the quadtree is used to specify the address of each subimage or quadrants for creating a EWFA. We observed that the EWFA encoding process is also similar to fractal encoding process and the size of domain pool increases dynamically during the process of EWFA encoding. Experimentations are carried on standard databases like football, suzie, crew, highway, soccer, ice, and harbour sequence etc.

In this article the robustness of fractal code generated by model-residual fractal image coding algorithms is discussed. The code, representing a transformation, is transmitted through a binary symmetric channel introducing random bit errors. These bit errors introduce errors in the transformation and in the decoded image. It is shown that the effects on the decoded image are limited, and that it is possible to approximately well calculate the effects of the errors if the characteristics of the transmission channel are known.

This study presents two watermarking approaches in fractal coding images. The fast method, namely Mean-Classified fractal coding (MCFC), partitions the domain blocks of an image into groups according the mean values. As documented in experimental results, a high embedding capacity can be achieved with good image quality. Moreover, the MCFC is proved of highly robust to against many types of attacks, including JPEG, tampering, and rotating. The second method, namely Hierarchical Block Matching fractal coding (HBMFC), utilizes different domain block sizes to enlarge the searching pool with slightly sacrificing the coding gain. The HBMFC is mainly adapted to fragile watermarking, which can be applied to authentication application to prevent from illegal alteration.

This paper reports on investigations concerning the convergence of the reconstruction process in fractal coding schemes from a statistical point of view. For a rather general family of "fractal operators" a necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence based on the spectral radius of the fractal operator is provided. Emerging from this condition the probability density function (PDF) of the magnitude of the eigenvalues is formulated which enables to determine a probabilistic measure for the convergence of the reconstruction process. Since the PDF considerably depends on the structure of the operators, various coding schemes can be analyzed with respect to their convergence properties in a statistical sense. The results presented indicate that certain types of operators are less suited for applications in the field of fractal coding compared to others.

To deal with the time-consuming problem in the fractal coding, a novel method based on the region competition strategy is introduced to improve the speed of fractal coding effectively. This strategy adopted can discover the optimal affine matching block and the optimal affine transformation of each range block, improving some affine ones with bigger error. Experiments on still life image, fractal image and remote sensing image show that the proposed scheme reduces the compression time and obtains the approximate reconstruction fidelity while it has the same compression ratios as that of adaptive quad-tree partitioned fractal coding.

The results of application of the modified genetic algorithm of fractal coding to still images and video sequences are presented. The dependence of the compression coefficient on the size of the rank block is obtained. Comparison of fractal compression with standard MPEG-4 compression algorithms is performed and it is shown that it is possible to achieve double the compression coefficients at the same signal-to-noise ratio values. In the video sequence, both I-frames and predicted P, B frames were subjected to fractal compression. The simulation results showed what time in seconds is spent when encoding one frame.

The image watermarking technology is a technique of embedding hidden data in an original image. In this paper, a new watermarking method for embedding watermark bits based on Chaos-fractal coding is given. A chaotic signal is defined as being deterministic, pseudo periodic and presenting sensitivity to initial conditions. Combining a chaos system with fractal coding plays an important role in the security, invisibility and capacity of the proposed scheme. The main idea of the new proposed algorithm for coding is to determine a set of selective blocks for steady embedding. Simulation results show that the CFC algorithm (Chaos-fractal coding) has a confident capacity. The embedding technique that proposed in this paper is quite general, and can be applied to the extracting scheme with demanded changes. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
