Transverse parton momenta in single inclusive hadron production in e⁺e^- annihilation processes

We study the transverse momentum distributions of single inclusive hadron production in e(+)e(-) annihilation processes. Although the only available experimental data are scarce and quite old, we find that the fundamental features of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution, historically addressed in Drell-Yan processes and, more recently, in Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes, are visible in e(+)e(-) annihilations as well. Interesting effects related to its non-perturbative regime can be observed. We test two different parameterizations for the p perpendicular to dependence of the cross section: the usual Gaussian distribution and a power-law model. We find the latter to be more appropriate in describing this particular set of experimental data, over a relatively large range of p perpendicular to values. We use this model to map some of the features of the data within the framework of TMD evolution, and discuss the caveats of this and other possible interpretations, related to the one-dimensional nature of the available experimental data. Jet fragmentation in pp, p plus Pb and Pb plus Pb collisions in the ATLAS detector

Jets are an important tool to study the hot, dense matter produced in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. Jet rates have been found to be reduced by approximately a factor of two, in the most central events and over a wide kinematic range. In order to understand precisely how the jets are modified, it is important to measure how the jet momentum is carried by its fragmentation products. In this proceedings, we present the status of fragmentation function measurements at 5.02 TeV for p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions as well as measurement for Pb+Pb and pp collisions at 2.76 TeV.

Multiplicities of charged pions and charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering were measured in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x, the relative virtual-photon energy y and the relative hadron energy z. Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar target ((LiD)-Li-6). They cover the kinematic domain in the photon virtuality Q(2) > 1 (GeV/c) 2, 0.004 < x < 0.4, 0.2 < z < 0.85 and 0.1 < y < 0.7. In addition, a leading-order pQCD analysis was performed using the pion multiplicity results to extract quark fragmentation functions. (C) 2016 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Inclusive jet measurements in Pb+Pb collisions at 5 TeV with the ATLAS detector

In relativistic heavy ion collisions, a hot medium with a high density of unscreened color charges is produced. Jets are produced at the early stages of this collision and are known to be affected by parton energy loss during their propagation through the hot medium. One manifestation of this energy loss is a lower yield of jets propagating the medium than expected in the absence of medium effects. ATLAS has provided a quantification of this jet suppression by the jet R_AA measurement in run 1 of the LHC. A factor of two suppression was seen in central heavy ion collisions with respect to pp collisions. The R_AA exhibited only a weak, if any, rapidity dependence, and a slow rise with increasing jet momentum. These proceedings summarizes results on the inclusive jet production, new results on dijet measurements and the measurement of the jet fragmentation in Pb+Pb collisions at center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

The frag- mentation functions are measured in Pb+Pb and pp collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The distributions are measured as a function of jet trans- verse momentum and rapidity. The analysis utilises an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb−1 of Pb+Pb data and 4.0 pb−1 of pp data collected in 2011 and 2013, respectively, at the same centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV. Modest but signif- icant centrality-dependent modifications of fragmentation functions in Pb+Pb collisions with respect to those in pp collisions are seen. Measurements of the yield and nuclear modification factor, RAA, for inclusive jets are performed us- ing 25 pb−1 of pp data at √ s = 5.02 TeV and 0.49 nb−1 of Pb+Pb data at √ sNN = 5.02 TeV. Jet suppression and the flavor dependence of partonic energy loss with ATLAS

In relativistic heavy ion collisions, a hot medium with a high density of unscreened color charges is produced. One manifestation of the energy loss of jets propagating through the medium is a lower yield of jets and hadrons emerging from this medium than expected in the absence of medium effects. Therefore modifications of the jet yield are directly sensitive to the energy loss mechanism. Furthermore, jets with different flavor content are expected to be affected by the medium in different ways. In this publication, the latest ATLAS results on single hadron suppression along with the complementary measurements of single jet suppression are presented. Rapidity dependence, which is sensitive to the relative energy loss between quark and gluon jets, is discussed. Finally, a new measurement of jet fragmentation functions is presented.

Jets in Heavy Ion Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

Jets constitute a golden probe to study the quark gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions at the LHC. Being produced at the early stages of the collisions, they are expected to be modified as propagating through the hot and dense medium. A signature of the modification is the energy loss lowering the jet yields at a given transverse momentum. A factor of two suppression is observed in central Pb+Pb collisions with respect to p p collisions. Other signatures are the modification of the dijet momentum balance and the modification of fragmentation functions. These proceedings describe results on these observables from ATLAS in Runs 1 and 2. The high statistical significance of these data samples collected by ATLAS allows precision measurements of these observables in a wide range of transverse momentum and centrality.

Momentum sum rules for fragmentation functions are considered. In particular, we give a general proof of the Schafer-Teryaev sum rule for the transverse momentum dependent Collins function. We also argue that corresponding sum rules for related fragmentation functions do not exist. Our model-independent analysis is supplemented by calculations in a simple field-theoretical model. Medium-modified DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions from large to small x

The unified description of fragmentation function evolution from large to small x which was developed for the vacuum in previous publications is now generalized to the medium, and is studied for the case in which the complete contribution from the largest class of soft gluon logarithms. the double logarithms, are accounted for and with the fixed order part calculated to leading order. In this approach it proves possible to choose the remaining degrees of freedom related to the medium such that the distribution of produced hadrons is suppressed at large momenta while the production of soft radiation-induced charged hadrons at small momenta is enhanced, in agreement with experiment. Just as for the vacuum, our approach does not require further assumptions concerning fragmentation and is more complete than previous computations of evolution in the medium. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V..
