In relativistic heavy ion collisions, a hot medium with a high density of unscreened color charges is produced. One manifestation of the energy loss of jets propagating through the medium is a lower yield of jets and hadrons emerging from this medium than expected in the absence of medium effects. Therefore modifications of the jet yield are directly sensitive to the energy loss mechanism. Furthermore, jets with different flavor content are expected to be affected by the medium in different ways. In this publication, the latest ATLAS results on single hadron suppression along with the complementary measurements of single jet suppression are presented. Rapidity dependence, which is sensitive to the relative energy loss between quark and gluon jets, is discussed. Finally, a new measurement of jet fragmentation functions is presented.

Inclusive cross section for pion production in proton - proton collisions are calculated based on unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDFs). In addition to purely gluonic terms the present approach includes also quark degrees of freedom. Phenomenological fragmentation functions from the literature are used. The new mechanisms are responsible for pi+ - pi- asymmetry. In contrast to standard collinear approach, application of 2 -> 1 k(t) - factorization approach can be extended towards much lower transverse momenta, both at mid and forward rapidity region. The results of the calculation are compared with SPS and RHIC data.

The inclusive distributions of gluons and pions for high-energy NN collisions are calculated. The results for several unintegrated gluon distributions (UGD's) from the literature are compared. We find huge differences in both rapidity and p(t) of gluons and pi's in NN collisions for different models of UGD's. The Kharzeev-Levin UGD gives good description of momentum distribution of charged hadrons at midrapidities. We find, however, that the gluonic mechanism discussed does not describe the inclusive distributions of charged particles in the fragmentation region. Some of the missing mechanisms are calculated with the help of unintegrated parton distributions being solutions of the Kwiecinski CCFM equations. We predict an asymmetry in pi(+) and pi(-) production which could be studied by the BRAHMS Collaboration at RHIC.
Charm and beauty production measurements in proton–proton (pp) collisions are an important test of perturbative QCD calculations, based on the factorisation approach, which assumes universal fragmentation functions a...

We describe some of the recent developments in testing the Standard Model, beginning with the tremendous progress that has been made concerning our theoretical understanding of strangeness in the proton (the analogue of the Lamb shift in QED). We also summarise the contribution of parity violation, from electron-proton to neutrino-nucleus scattering, in testing the evolution of the weak charge of the proton predicted by the Standard Model. Finally, we describe recent progress in the calculation of fragmentation functions, which may prove important in the exploration of new observables such as transversity.
Charged particle spectra were measured in deep inelastic interactions at HERA in different kinematic regions of x and Q 2 with the emphasis to study parton dynamics beyond DGLAP evolution. The data collected at HERA w...

Title: Study of jet fragmentation and inclusive jet production in heavy-ion colli- sions with the ATLAS experiment Author: Mgr. Radim Slovák Institute: Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics Supervisor: Mgr. Martin Spousta, Ph.D., Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, Charles University Abstract: This thesis presents two measurements - measurement of the jet frag- mentation functions and inclusive jet production in heavy-ion collisions. The frag- mentation functions are measured in Pb+Pb and pp collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The distributions are measured as a function of jet trans- verse momentum and rapidity. The analysis utilises an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb−1 of Pb+Pb data and 4.0 pb−1 of pp data collected in 2011 and 2013, respectively, at the same centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV. Modest but signif- icant centrality-dependent modifications of fragmentation functions in Pb+Pb collisions with respect to those in pp collisions are seen. Measurements of the yield and nuclear modification factor, RAA, for inclusive jets are performed us- ing 25 pb−1 of pp data at √ s = 5.02 TeV and 0.49 nb−1 of Pb+Pb data at √ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The jets are measured over the transverse momentum range of 100-1000 GeV in six rapidity intervals covering |y| < 2.8. The magnitude of the RAA...

Polarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) is a key process in the quest for a resolution of the proton spin puzzle. We present the complete results for the polarized SIDIS process at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Our analytical results include all partonic channels for the scattering of polarized leptons off hadrons and a spin-averaged hadron identified in the final state. A numerical analysis of the NNLO corrections illustrates their significance and the reduced residual scale dependence in the kinematic range probed by the future electron-ion collider.
