Single spin asymmetry AULsin(2ϕh) in dihadron production in SIDIS

The paper calculates the helicity-dependent dihadron fragmentation function by extending the dihadron spectator model and examine the single longitudinal spin asymmetry AULsin(2ϕh) from dihadron in semi-inclusive inelastic scattering. This function elucidates the relationship between the longitudinal polarization of the fragmented quark and the transverse momentum of the resulting hadron pairs. A study by the COMPASS collaboration detected a minimal signal in their experimental search for this azimuthal asymmetry in semi-inclusive inelastic scattering. Here, we use the spectator model to calculate the unknown T-odd dihadron fragmentation function H1⊥. Adopting collinear factorization to describe the data, avoiding the transverse momentum dependent factorization and the associated resummation effects, helping us understand the asymmetry and explaining why the signal is so weak. We involve the approach of transverse momentum dependence in the model calculations, in order to formulate the differential cross sections and the spin asymmetries in terms of the collinear parton distributions and the collinear dihadron fragmentation functions. A transverse momentum factor analysis method was used, in which the transverse momentum of the final hadron pairs was not integrated. The asymmetry of sin(2ϕh) in COMPASS kinematics was calculated and compared with experimental data. In addition, predictions for the same asymmetry are also presented for HERMES and the Electron Ion Collider.

Complete next-to-leading order calculation of single inclusive π0 production in forward proton-nucleus collisions

We present the first fully consistent calculation of inclusive π0 production at forward rapidities at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in proton-lead collisions at s=8.16 TeV within the color glass condensate approach. The center-of-mass energy dependence is determined by the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with the initial condition constrained at NLO accuracy by the proton structure function measurements. We find that the LHCb data further constrain this nonperturbative input, and that both the NLO corrections to the evolution equation and to the impact factor have significant effects on the nuclear modification factor RpPb. The complete NLO calculation is shown to be in qualitative agreement with the LHCb data, and the predictions are found to be sensitive to the details of the applied deep inelastic scattering (DIS) fit. These results demonstrate the need to perform global analyses of DIS and LHC data in order to probe gluon saturation phenomena at precision level at very small momentum fraction x.

Non-Abelian feature of parton energy loss in energy dependence of jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

One of the non-Abelian features of parton energy loss is the ratio ΔEg/ΔEq=9/4 between gluon and quark jets. Since jet production rate is dominated by quark jets at high xT=2pT/s and by gluon jets at low xT, high pT hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions should reflect such a non-Abelian feature. Within a leading-order perturbative QCD parton model that incorporates transverse expansion and Woods-Saxon nuclear distribution, the energy dependence of large pT~5−20GeV/c hadron suppression is found to be sensitive to the non-Abelian feature of parton energy loss and could be tested by data from low-energy runs at Brookhaven National Laboratory's relativistic heavy-ion collider or data from the large hadron collider.

STUDY OF VECTOR MESON fragmentation USING A BROKEN SU(3) MODEL

Inclusive hadro-production in e(+) e(-) annihilation processes is examined to study the fragmentation process. A broken SU(3) model is used to determine the quark and gluon fragmentation functions of octet vector mesons, rho and K*, in a simple way with an SU(3) breaking parameter lambda. These are expressed in terms of just two light quark fragmentation functions, V (x, Q(2)) and gamma(x, Q(2)) and the gluon fragmentation function D-g(x, Q(2)). These functions are parametrized at the low input scale of Q(0)(2) = 1.5 GeV2, evolved through LO DGLAP evolution including charm and bottom flavor at appropriate thresholds, and fitted by comparison with data at the Z-pole. The model is extended with the introduction of a few additional parameters to include a study of singlet-octet mixing and hence omega and phi fragmentation. The model gives good fits to the available data for x greater than or similar to 0.01, where x is the scaled energy of the hadron. The model is then applied successfully to omega, phi production in pp collisions at the relativistic heavy ion collider, RHIC, these data form an important baseline for the study of Quark Gluon Plasma in heavy nucleus collisions at RHIC, and also in future at the LHC.

We address the propagation and hadronization of a struck quark by studying the gauge invariance of the color-averaged cut quark propagator, and by relating this to the single inclusive quark fragmentation correlator by means of new sum rules. Using suitable Wilson lines, we provide a gauge-invariant definition for the mass of the color-averaged dressed quark and decompose this into the sum of a current and an interaction-dependent component. The latter, which we argue is an order parameter for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, also appears in the sum rule for the twist-3 (E) over tilde fragmentation function, providing a specific experimental way to probe the dynamical generation of mass in Quantum Chromo Dynamics. Higher twist jet broadening and classical propagation

The transverse broadening of jets produced in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus is studied in the collinear limit. A class of medium enhanced higher twist corrections are resummed to calculate the transverse momentum distribution of the produced collinear jet. In contrast to previous approaches, resummation of the leading length enhanced higher twist corrections is shown to lead to a two-dimensional diffusion equation for the transverse momentum of the propagating jet. Results for the average transverse momentum obtained from this approach are then compared to the broadening expected from a classical Langevin analysis for the propagation of the jet under the action of the fluctuating color Lorentz force inside the nucleons. The set of approximations that lead to identical results from the two approaches are outlined. The relationship between the momentum diffusion constant D and the transport coefficient q^ is explicitly derived.

Resolving the plasma profile via differential single inclusive suppression

The ability of experimental signatures to resolve the spatiotemporal profile of an expanding quark-gluon plasma is studied. In particular, the single inclusive suppression of high-momentum hadrons versus the centrality of a heavy-ion collision and with respect to the reaction plane in noncentral collisions is critically examined. Calculations are performed in the higher twist formalism for the modification of the fragmentation functions. Radically different nuclear geometries are used. The influence of different initial gluon distributions as well as different temporal evolution scenarios on the single inclusive suppression of high-momentum pions are outlined. It is demonstrated that the modification versus the reaction plane is quite sensitive to the initial spatial density. Such sensitivity remains even in the presence of a strong elliptic flow.

Dihadron helicity correlation in photon-nucleus collisions

The helicity correlation of two back-to-back hadrons is a powerful tool that makes it possible to probe the longitudinal spin transfer G1L in unpolarized hadronic collisions. In this work, we investigate the helicity correlation of back-to-back dihadrons produced in photon-nucleus collisions with both spacelike and quasireal photons and explore its potential in understanding the flavor dependence of spin-dependent fragmentation functions. We present helicity amplitudes of partonic scatterings with both virtual and real photons and make numerical predictions for the dihadron helicity correlations at the future Electron Ion Collider experiment and the current Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider/LHC ultraperipheral collision experiment. Future experimental measurements can also illuminate the fragmentation function of circularly polarized gluons.

Difficulty of extracting energy loss probability distributions from RAA

The nuclear suppression of high transverse momentum PT hadrons is one of the most striking findings in heavy-ion collision experiments. It has long been recognized that the suppression can be theoretically described by folding the primary parton spectrum with an energy loss probability distribution which is suitably averaged over the collision geometry. However, an interesting problem is to what degree the procedure can be inverted, i.e., given a measurement of the suppression factor RAA with arbitrary precision, can the probability distribution of energy loss be extracted in a model-independent way? In this Brief Report, we present a conceptual study of the inversion problem for LHC energies and demonstrate that a measurement of RAA alone is insufficient to determine the distribution, other observables such as γ-hadron correlations must be taken into account.

EMC effect in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering processes

By considering the x-dependence of π+,π−,K+,K−,Λ,Λ¯,p,p¯ hadron productions in charged lepton semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off nuclear target (using Fe as an example) and deuteron D target, we find that (Λ¯A/ΛA)/(Λ¯D/ΛD) and (p¯A/pA)/(p¯A/pA) are ideal to figure out the nuclear sea content, which is predicted to be different by different models accounting for the nuclear EMC effect.
