This work describes a system based on a web application that allows the remote execution of IEC 61499 functionblocks using the input parameters entered by a user in the web interface. The results obtained from executing the functionblock are sent to the field device using simple communication interfaces. The system is developed based on a hierarchical architecture that defines the components interconnections, their functions and communication patterns for the information exchange. An evaluation of the implemented prototype is also presented.

This paper analyzes the possibility of using the free FBDK (functionblock Development Kit) tool for developing and implementing process control optimization problems. The evaluation of the tool is done from the perspective of a beginner user by designing a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The PSO algorithm is used because of its easy implementation and robustness. Several aspects regarding FBDK's usability, availability of advanced mathematical functions, availability of documentation, debugging options and execution performance are discussed.
