function modeling combined with physics-based reasoning for assessing design options and supporting innovative ideation

functional modeling is an analytical approach to design problems that is widely taught in certain academic communities but not often used by practitioners. This approach can be applied in multiple ways to formalize the understanding of the systems, to support the synthesis of the design in the development of a new product, or to support the analysis and improvement of existing systems incrementally. The type of usage depends on the objectives that are targeted. The objectives can be categorized into two key groups: discovering a totally new solution, or improving an existing one. This article proposes to use the functional modeling approach to achieve three goals: to support the representation of physics-based reasoning, to use this physics-based reasoning to assess design options, and finally to support innovative ideation. The exemplification of the function-based approach is presented via a case study of a glue gun proposed for this Special Issue. A reverse engineering approach is applied, and the authors seek an incremental improvement of the solution. As the physics-based reasoning model presented in this article is heavily dependent on the quality of the functional model, the authors propose a general approach to limit the interpretability of the functional representations by mapping the functional vocabulary with elementary structural blocks derived from bond graph theory. The physics-based reasoning approach is supported by a mathematical framework that is summarized in the article. The physics-based reasoning model is used for discovering the limitations of solutions in the form of internal contradictions and guiding the design ideation effort.

Research and industrial practice have produced a host of function models and modeling approaches over the last decades. Each of these is meant to support designers in their design endeavors. Industrial practice is excessively diversified in terms of contextual requirements, aims, and adopted processes;this automatically begs the question which of the existing models should be selected for application in a specific situation. This paper sets out to contribute to this discourse. It strives to benchmark the fairly novel integrated function modeling (IFM) framework against the well-established function structures modeling approach. The paper comparatively investigates the respective capabilities of the approaches, following the benchmarking protocol used earlier in relation to this Special Issue. function structures are used as reference as they represent one of the most widespread function modeling approaches in research and practice. Both function structures and the IFM framework are exemplarily applied for modeling a glue gun. The gradual generation and refinement of the models is used to showcase their respective benefits and shortcomings. Eventually, the IFM framework is found to excel over function structures in terms of comprehensiveness and support for different types of function analyses. Finally, future research directions are proposed.

FueL: Representing function structure and function dependencies with a UML profile for function modeling

modeling functions is a key aspect of artifact design, including software engineering and business systems modeling, but it is likewise of fundamental importance in natural systems modeling, for example in modeling biological organisms. The Unified modeling Language (UML), which originated from object-oriented software engineering, is nowadays a de facto standard for conceptual modeling and its current applications go far beyond software engineering. The paper investigates first to what extent UML is suited for modeling functions. We survey various approaches to function modeling with UML and identify their limitations. Based on the conducted analysis, we introduce a UML profile for function modeling, called the function modeling Language (FueL). FueL enables the modeling of the structure of functions, of relations between functions, such as function decomposition, as well as of function ascription, i.e., of relations linking functions with other types of entities. The main application field that we considered while developing FueL is bioinformatics. Nonetheless, the presented profile is domain-independent and is capable of modeling cross-domain systems. The profile has been tested on fragments of the Molecular function Ontology, a sub-ontology of the Gene Ontology. In this connection the paper further demonstrates that the applications of FueL transcend the construction of new models, by showing how the profile aids restructuring and refactoring existing models.

Digital twin represents a fusion of the informational and physical domains, to bridge the material and virtual worlds. Existing methods of digital twin modeling are mainly based on modular representation, which limits guidance of the modeling process. Such methods do not consider the components or operational rules of the digital twin in detail, thereby preventing designers from applying these methods in their fields. With the increasing application of digital twin to various engineering fields, an effective method of modeling a multi-dimensional digital twin at the conceptual level is required. To such an end, this paper presents a method for the conceptual modeling of a digital twin based on a five-dimensional digital twin framework to represent the complex relationship between digital twin objects and their attributes. The proposed method was used to model the digital twin of an intelligent vehicle at the concept level.

A systematic problem analysis network for product conceptual design

Problem analysis is a starting point of product development. The effective problem analysis can narrow the scope of potential problems and improve design efficiency. Although different methods have been proposed for the design problem analysis, the existing tools of the problem analysis are not systematic and effective. This paper presents a product design problem analysis and solution method based on problem networks. The proposed method conducts the problem decomposition, derivation and solving by considering the problem generation, exploratory and hypotheticals. Computer-aided analysis tools are integrated to improve reproducibility of the analysis solution and reduce the workload of designers. The method is applied in developing a new type of the charging gun cable with a granted patent. Feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are proved.

The coordinated integration of agricultural and industrial processes in plant-derived production can offer a solution toward sustainability. However, it is hard for general practitioners to realize the coordinated integration of these processes just based on the precedent fact. A special form clarifying the functions of the required activities should be shared among the practitioners for deliberate system design. In this study, a function model for coordinated integration was developed using the type-zero language of integrated definition for object-oriented design. Inputs, outputs, controls, and mechanisms for the required activities and the relationship between them were analyzed through modeling, after which the model was verified based on actual historical facts in the Japanese cane sugar industry. Finally, as a case study from a different industry, the applicability and limitation of the function model in the palm oil industry are discussed. Although the validity of the model should be confirmed through accumulating future case studies, the structure of the function model should be common to industrial crop-derived productions.

The behavior of a function call statement is decided by its called function, and it is hard to judge the purpose simply from the function call statement. How to simulate the function call is the key part for the accurate symbolic execution. This paper puts forward a path-sensitive function modeling method, in which the definition of stub function is generated according to the calling context. Experiments show that this method is effective and the execution path is consistent with the target path.

Knowledge-supported Development of function Models for Mechanical Products Using Intelligent function Libraries

Today, there is an increasing need for cross-domain collaboration in development. In order to overcome the challenges arising from this cross-domain collaboration, current approaches focus on model-based, function-oriented product development. Model-based, function-oriented product development requires the modeling of functions in a modeling language such as the systems modeling language (SysML). Currently, the function modeling requires high modeling efforts. These arise especially when systems are decomposed to the elementary level for analysis or development. An approach used to reduce modeling effort is the use of function libraries. However, the effectiveness of these libraries is currently inhibited by the effort required to find suitable functions. The objective of this work is to enhance searching for suitable functions by proposing an intelligent function library, consisting of a SysML function library and an algorithm for filtering the library functions based on different search criteria. The algorithm supports the development team in the modeling of functions by automatic analysis of the functions already modeled and the suggestion of suitable functions from the function library based on this analysis. The innovation of this approach is, that the function library is easily customizable and flexibly extendable according to the company and their product portfolio.

Model based engineering has enabled automated analytical reasoning early in the design phase. As a result, inconsistencies and design errors can be captured early in the development lifecycle. But there is still a gap in the natural language-based specifications and its actual implementation. This is because the formal method-based tools utilize mathematical principles and theories of computation that require specific skills, thus reducing the usability of model-based engineering. Natural language is the most widely used method to represent specifications. So, it is intuitive to utilize natural language-based representation to generate system and formal annotations such that it will enable automated architectural analysis with much wider acceptance leading to a much broader impact. In our paper we focus on designing the above-mentioned approach that integrates representation of the specifications in a subset of English language which can then be used to generate system architecture in Architecture Analysis and Design Language along with the generation of functional specifications. We illustrate our approach by validating it with use cases from the aerospace and electromechanical domains.

Gene Expression Programming is new member of the genetic computing family which is developed from the gene expression rules of biogenetics. This paper aim to solve the function modeling through applying the improved GEP algorithm and provide valuable forecasting function and instructional data for the practical work. The paper will introduce the application background of GEP, basic theories of GEP, at the same time, it proposes the corrective method of both evolutionary rate and numerical constants in order to realize the function modeling. Furthermore, experiment proves that GEP is more effective than the traditional methods.
