This study presents a method to determine weights of objectives in multi objective linear programming without decision maker/s preference. The method is developed by modifying Belenson and Kapur's approach under fuzziness. It is used two-person zero-sum game with mixed strategies. Degree of linear membership functions of objectives are used in pay-off matrix. The proposed method is shown with a numerical example and several fuzzy solution approaches are used to get a solution by using obtained weights. Also the results of problems that are obtained from literature are presented.

Efficient resource allocation for production and cost-effective dispatch under uncertainty is crucial for a streamlined supply chain. Traditional segregated and deterministic production–distribution models often fall short in providing robust solutions due to dynamic market demands, supplier reliability, and resource availability. In this context, this paper focuses on integrating production and distribution problems while managing conflicting goals and addressing uncertainties. A fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FMOLP) model is developed to simultaneously minimize the total integrated production cost and delivery time amid uncertainties. This article aims to shed light on the practical implications and benefits of adopting integrated production and distribution models. Here, triangular fuzzy numbers and the concept of the minimum accepted level method are employed to formulate the problem. The minimum operator and weighted additive operator methods are employed to aggregate all fuzzy sets with non-linear exponential membership functions for a better representation of the FMOLP problem. A scenario-based analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is devised, integrating expert knowledge and experience to rank multiple objectives, thereby enhancing realism for the respective case. The experimental results reveal that the proposed integration increases the satisfaction level of decision makers from 0.684 to 0.747. Furthermore, the higher degree of closeness of the proposed model compared to the employed approach validates the final results. Impacts and interaction analysis also demonstrate the necessity of an integrated approach for production and distribution planning under uncertainty. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Performance evaluation and a flow allocation decision model for a sustainable supply chain of an apparel industry

There is a growing concern that business enterprises and their supply chains focus primarily on economic activities and ignore their impact on the environment and society. This paper aims to help decision makers, managers, and practitioners to achieve economic growth, societal development, and environmental protection by developing sustainable supply chain performance measures and proposes a partner selection and flow allocation decision-making model. Survey data from 278 business organizations from the Indian apparel industry supply chain network were used, and an integrated method of structural equation modeling, fuzzy analytical hierarchy process, and fuzzy multi-objective linear programming was applied to the proposed model. The results of the structural equation modeling analysis indicate that the survey respondents considered sustainable production performance to be of prime importance, which thus indicates its significance in developing a sustainable supply chain for the apparel industry. To illustrate the use of the proposed model for partner selection and flow allocation decision making, real-time data from an apparel manufacturer are presented. Optimal results were obtained for two strategies sustainahility and cost saving-to show a cost-benefit trade-off when developing a sustainable supply chain. Using comparative performance, a decision maker can choose an appropriate strategy based on cost benefit analysis of the presented trade-offs. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All tights reserved.

Optimal vehicle-dispatch decisions for cement silos using a fuzzy multi-objective approach

In real dispatch problems for cement-silo trucks, input data or parameters, such as forecasting demand, resources, costs, and the objective function, are often imprecise or fuzzy because some information is incomplete, unavailable, or unobtainable. This work presents a novel fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FMOLP) model that solves the cement-silo vehicle-dispatch problem in a fuzzy environment. This model is applied to solve multi-source, multi-product, multi-vehicle, and multi-ready-mixed-concrete (RMC) plant vehicle-dispatch problems with imprecise goals, input data, and parameters. This work elucidates the relationship between dispatch planning and RMC plants with a focus on the allocation of cement-silo trucks. This work uses a real cement study case to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model. The main contribution of this work is its fuzzy mathematical programming methodology for solving the cement-silo vehicle-dispatch problem in a fuzzy environment. The analytical results can help dispatchers analyse systematically the cost-effectiveness of vehicle-dispatch planning in practical applications.

Compromised supply chain planning under dominant systems with inventory policies and cost uncertainty

In practice, companies with dominant power influence partner operations for their benefits. This paper proposes the supply chain (SC) planning models that determine the optimal sale, pricing, production, and inventory plans of each SC member based on the dominant policy. The theoretical contributions of this paper include a development of linear mathematical functions and explicitly considering the inventory turnover as one of the business performance measures in addition to profit and revenue. The fuzzy multi-objective linear programming models (FMOLP) under dominant systems are developed. A case study in plastic fashion accessory industry in Thailand is performed. The performance measures are translated into satisfaction levels and plotted in a radar chart with an area of possibility, which clearly shows the sensitivity degree of uncertainty. Practical contribution is that this paper recommends suitable pricing and inventory plans based on the dominant policy. [Submitted: 15 August 2018;Accepted: 18 March 2019]

fuzzy multi-objective optimization for closed loop logistics network design in bread-producing industries

Supply chain network design is one of the most important issues in designing supply chains because of its effect on performance and efficiency of the logistics network. Customer service improvements and environmental requirements have forced most companies to take into account the reverse flows in designing their supply chain networks. This paper employs an interactive fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (IFMOLP) method to solve fuzzy bi-objective reverse logistics network design problems. This method attempts to minimize the total cost and total delivery time of the system simultaneously. The presented method provides decision makers with an interactive framework that facilitates the process of decision making in a fuzzy environment. Moreover, this framework enables the decision makers to interactively change fuzzy data in order to reach the most satisfactory solutions. A genetic-based heuristic algorithm is presented to solve the model for larger cases. A case study in a bread-producing factory is presented to show the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Taipower, the official electricity authority of Taiwan, encounters several difficulties in planning annual coal purchase and allocation schedule, e.g., with multiple sources, multiple destinations, multiple coal types, different shipping vessels, and even in uncertain demand and supply. In this study, these concerns are formulated as a fuzzy bicriteria multi-index transportation problem. Furthermore, an effective and interactive algorithm is proposed which combines reducing index method and interactive fuzzy multi-objective linear programming technique to cope with a complicated problem which may be prevalent in other industries. Results obtained in this study clearly demonstrate that this model can not only satisfy more of the actual requirements of the integral system but also offer more information to the decision makers (DMs) for reference in favor of exalting decision making quality.

A model for the selection of transportation modes in the context of sustainable freight transportation

Purpose A sustainable freight transportation system involves freight processes that are economically efficient, socially inclusive and environment friendly. For enhancing sustainability in the freight operations, mode selection is a crucial strategic decision. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is selecting the best mode, or a combination of modes based on various criteria to carry shipments from origin to destination. Design/methodology/approach This study has used an integrated grey relational analysis based intuitionistic fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making process (GRA-IFP) and fuzzy multi-objective linear programming model. Three scenarios have been developed for analyzing sensitivity of decision variables with the variations in parameters under relevant conditions. A real case of Indian third-party logistics service provider has been used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. Findings The most relevant criterion emerged out in this study for multi-mode selection problem is costs. It can be concluded from the study that multi-modal freight transportation has the potential to improve the sustainability of freight transportation by reducing the costs, damages, emissions, traffic congestion and by increasing the speed of delivering the shipment. The sensitivity analysis further shows that road is the economical mode, whereas sea and rail together are the greenest as well as socially responsible modes of transportation. Originality/value This study provides an integrated tool, which can be used by freight transporters to decide upon the sustainable modes of transportation for their various shipments.

The demand for customization is gradually increasing given that recycled materials no longer meet customer demands for new products. Meeting the needs of a particular customer may require release of numerous new materials and recycled materials to minimize both total production costs and total CO2 emissions. The lot-sizing production-to-order problem is to optimize the lot size for each potential lot release. This study focuses on the relationship between new materials and recycled materials under varying production cost, machine yield and capacity and energy consumption. fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FMOLP) models are used to analyze factors in the relative cost-effectiveness and CO2 emissions. The proposed model evaluates cost-effectiveness and CO2 emissions and integrates multi-component and multi-machine functions for remanufacturing systems. The analytical results can help managers during decision making by enabling systematic analysis of the potential cost-effectiveness of recoverable remanufacturing. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Reverse logistics optimization of an industrial air conditioner manufacturing company for designing sustainable supply chain: a fuzzy hybrid multi-criteria decision-making approach

Magnified resource consumption and depletion of natural resources calls for non-flexible or strict regulations and penalties on industrial operations, increased rate of processing and reuse of waste material as a substitute for raw material and political and legal interventions at global scale. Product recovery involves reuse, repair, refurbishing, remanufacturing and materials recycling, requires an efficient network design known as reverse logistic network and offers economical benefits in terms of fewer procurement of raw material, inventory management and less disposal. In current study, a mixed integer linear programming model designed on a multi-stage reverse logistics network for product recovery is proposed which considers different recovery options-product remanufacturing, component reprocessing and material recycling for sustainable outcomes. The model is designed to find optimal solutions for fulfilling demand and revenue needs by focusing on strategic locations for collection centers, reprocessing centers, remanufacturing plants and transportation options and simultaneously achieving sustainability goals. The model is applied on an Indian based manufacturing unit of a Saudi Arabian Industrial Air conditioner manufacturing organization and the case is presented here. The model is converted into a multi-objective programming model in accordance with the importance of each objective suiting the business needs. All relevant objective functions are evaluated using BWM, AHP and FAHP methods to obtain weights for integration into a fuzzy linear programming model which eventually provides three separate results. The model applied has originality and uniqueness for applications to solve multi-objective problems under uncertain environment and tends to strike a balance between economic and environmental objectives.
