Uncertainty modeling and data manipulation are desirable in object-orienteddatabase systems to handle complex objects with imprecise properties. In this paper, we present an enhancement to the fuzzyobject-oriented data model (FOOD) (George et al., fuzzy Sets and Systems 60 (3) (1993) 259-272), that permits a truer representation of different types of uncertainty. Uncertainty is extended to the class definition level and is the basis for the determination of the membership of an object in a class. We describe a software architecture for the implementation of the model and discuss the significant details of a prototype implemented using the EXODUS storage manager (ESM). In this paper, we focus on conceptual data modeling and logical databasemodeling of fuzzy information. The IFO data model is extended with fuzzy set theory to cope with imperfect as well as with complex objects in the real world at a conceptual level. Concerning the logical databasemodeling of fuzzy information, we focus on the object-orienteddatabasemodel. Some major notions in the object-orienteddatabases such as objects, classes, objects-classes relationships, supertype/subtype, and multiple inheritances are extended under fuzzy information environment, and a generic model for fuzzyobject-orienteddatabases is developed. In particular, we develop the formal approach to mapping a fuzzy 1170 (IF2O) model to a fuzzyobject-orienteddatabase schema. Therefore, one can conduct the conceptual design of a databasemodel with fuzzy information and then transform it into the logical databasemodel.

Conceptual data modeling is essential for engineering applications. IDEF1X (Integration Definition for Information modeling) data model provides a formal framework for consistent modeling of the data necessary for the integration of various functional areas and its basic idea has been extensively applied in current industry. Information in real-world applications is often vague or ambiguous. Fuzziness is inherent in many engineering activities. In order to completely modelfuzzy engineering information at different abstraction levels of data model, object instances and attribute values in the IDEF1X data model, this paper introduces three levels of fuzziness into the IDEF1X data model, and the formal descriptions and the corresponding graphical representations are hereby presented. The formal transformation from the fuzzy IDEF1X data model to the fuzzy object-oriented database model is investigated. The formal transformation approaches proposed in the paper are demonstrated with examples.
