Application of generalized flexibility matrix in damage identification using Imperialist Competitive Algorithm

In this article, a new objective function which is formed by using generalized flexibility matrix is presented with the aim of solving the constrained optimization problem in damage detection procedure. The main purpose is to decrease the effects of truncation error which ensue from cutting off the higher order modes. Two different case studies are used to evaluate the proposed approach. These cases include, a 2D-frame and a Howe-Truss structure. In this study, each structure is modeled by finite element method and damages are induced by considering a reduction in the stiffness of the elements. Finally, the inverse problem of damage identification is solved by using the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) for each damage scenario. Not only the effect of noise on the obtained results is studied but also a comparison is drawn between the proposed method based on ICA and other conventional optimization algorithms, namely PSO and GA.

A generalized flexibility matrix-based objective function utilized for structure damage identification is firstly constructed. After transforming the damage identification into a constrained nonlinear least squares optimization problem, the trust-region algorithm is applied to find the solution of the inverse problem in multiple damage cases. Thereinto, the sensitivity analysis of the objective function with respect to the design variables is derived using the Nelson's method. At last, two numerical examples with several damage cases are investigated, including a steel truss bridge model as well as a drilling rig derrick model. Based on the computational results, it is evident that the presented approach provides excellent validity and reliability for the large and complicated engineering structures.

Based on the generalized flexibility matrix, a method for detecting structural damage is presented in this paper. The generalized flexibility matrix is approximately constructed by using the first frequency and the corresponding mode shape only. Then the difference of generalized flexibility curvature between undamaged and damaged state is used to detect the possible damaged elements. Finally, a numerical example concerning a simple supported beam is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Achieving complete data of measured mode shapes is costly during the process of structural dynamic test. This results in a challenge for the damage detection. This paper concentrates on structural damage detection problem with incomplete mode shape data. An efficient method to deal with this problem is proposed. The generalized flexibility matrix (GFM) is employed. By introducing a few new variables and partitioning the involved matrices, a nonnegative linear least square model is derived. Most of the variables in the model are the damage extents of structural elements. Our method does not involve mode shape expansion or reduction technique. Three numerical examples show that the performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the GFM method combining with mode shape expansion, it is almost the same as that of the GFM approach with complete mode shapes data.

Jacket-type offshore platforms are crucial infrastructure assets that can be damaged, disrupting operations and causing significant economic losses. To manage these risks, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is crucial in extending the lifespan of these structures. Recent years have seen the development of innovative vibration-based methods for SHM, which are based on the principle that changes in the dynamic model specifications of a structure indicate damage. The aim of this paper is to present an effective process for detecting structural damage through vibrational analysis and determining its location and severity. The proposed method uses vibrational characteristics of the structure, such as mass and stiffness, to deduce changes in its physical properties through monitoring with sensors. The methodology is formulated as an optimization problem where the target function is established based on the modal information of the structure in both intact and damaged states, and optimized subject to specific constraints. The solution to the optimization problem provides information on the location and severity of the damage. The methodology is demonstrated through a case study on a scaled model of a jacket-type offshore platform, showing its effectiveness in accurately identifying damage location and severity at varying levels of damage.

An improved generalized flexibility matrix-based method using matrix partitioning technique for structure damage identification is proposed. As an effective damage identification method, the generalized flexibility matrix requires fewer vibration frequencies and corresponding modal shapes compared with the traditional flexibility matrix method. By introducing a new partitioning technique of the matrices involved in the constructive process of the governing equation, the improved method simplifies the process of calculation with a dramatic reduction in computational cost while maintaining accuracy of identification results. In the case of incomplete measured modal data, an improved matrix partitioning technique based on the model expansion method is applied and the damaged indicators can be identified using partial measured modal data. A K-type derrick steel structure in service is considered as a numerical example for inspection the validity and feasibility of the proposed method. Numerical results show better accuracy and efficiency of this method for various damage scenarios, and can be used for damage diagnosis or health monitoring of other large structures.

generalized flexibility matrix method has recently been introduced for identifying damages with the aim of overcoming some shortcomings of the approaches based on flexibility matrix. Researchers that use flexibility matrix to detect damages in structures face truncation errors ensue from cut off higher-order mode shapes, which are difficult to measure in practice. In this paper, a new procedure is presented to detect the damage site in a beam-type structure, where generalized flexibility matrix in conjunction with continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is utilized. Since flaws and cracks cause changes in flexibility of a system, this characteristic can be used as a damage indicator. Gaussian wavelet transform with four vanishing moments as a signal processing method is implemented to find the irregularity in a vector obtained from generalized flexibility matrix which is considered as a sign of damage. This method does not need to have either prior knowledge about the intact structure or its finite element model. The proposed technique is evaluated by numerical and experimental case studies.

A generalized flexibility–based objective function utilized for structure damage identification is constructed for solving the constrained nonlinear least squares optimized problem. To begin with, the generalized flexibility matrix (GFM) proposed to solve the damage identification problem is recalled and a modal expansion method is introduced. Next, the objective function for iterative optimization process based on the GFM is formulated, and the Trust-Region algorithm is utilized to obtain the solution of the optimization problem for multiple damage cases. And then for computing the objective function gradient, the sensitivity analysis regarding design variables is derived. In addition, due to the spatial incompleteness, the influence of stiffness reduction and incomplete modal measurement data is discussed by means of two numerical examples with several damage cases. Finally, based on the computational results, it is evident that the presented approach provides good validity and reliability for the large and complicated engineering structures.

Cyclical Parthenogenesis Algorithm for guided modal strain energy based structural damage detection

in this paper, a newly developed multi-agent meta-heuristic method, named Cyclical Parthenogenesis Algorithm (CPA), is incorporated into a guided modal strain energy based structural damage detection technique. A modal strain energy based index is used to guide the structural damage identification process, which is formulated as an inverse optimization problem. generalized flexibility matrix (GFM) of the structure is used to define the objective function of the optimization problem. Three numerical examples are provided in order to examine the viability of the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed method is capable of locating and quantifying structural damage using only the first few modes of the structure. The results are also compared with those of three other meta-heuristic algorithms in order to show the efficiency of CPA in solving the problem. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V. Based on the vibration information, a mixed sensitivity method is presented to identify structural damage by combining the eigenvalue sensitivity with the generalized flexibility sensitivity. The sensitivity of structural generalized flexibility matrix is firstly derived by using the first frequency and the corresponding mode shape only and then the eigenvalue sensitivity together with the generalized flexibility sensitivity are combined to calculate the elemental damage parameters. The presented mixed perturbation approach is demonstrated by a numerical example concerning a simple supported beam structure. It has been shown that the proposed procedure is simple to implement and may be useful for structural damage identification.
