Soaring complexity in supply chains with more fluctuations and ever increasing uncertainty in demand puts an increased focus on flexibility and changeability in manufacturing. Thus, it is increasingly important to determine the right change type, such as changes in the number of employees or overtime, at the right time in order to be able to react appropriately and sustainably to changes in demand. The developed approach uses frequency analysis to predict future changes in demand in different frequency ranges in order to assign appropriate change types to them and optimize the change intensity for each change type and time step. The foundation of the related algorithm is a discrete Fourier analysis that extracts relevant frequencies and assigns change types using generative algorithms to enable cost-minimizing production. The algorithm is validated against LSTM and ARIMA forecasting in a use case with seasonal time series including different noise levels. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. The design of two doubly salient (DS) machines with permanent magnet (PM) material placed in the stator yoke is calculated by generic algorithm from the perspective of pole-slot combination, flux concentrated effect and flux barrier effect, which can consider the local magnetic saturation. The electromagnetic characteristics of DSPM are analyzed by finite element method. When the topologies I and II have different motor volumes, the same winding numbers and PM material quantities, the maximum value of back electromotive force (EMF) and torque of topology II are larger by 22.27% and 12.02% than those of topology I, respectively. The torque ripple of topology II is lower by 41% than that of topology I. When the topologies I and II have the same motor volumes, winding numbers and PM material quantities, the maximum value of back EMF and torque of topology I are larger by 22.73% and 29.18% than those of topology II, respectively. The torque ripple of topology II is lower by 50% than that of topology I. © 2023 IEEE.

Compact arrays are known to be associated with antenna coupling and noise correlation. The noise can be either antenna noise, LNA noise or downstream noise. Due to these effects, it was shown that the matching network affects the performance of MIMO systems with coupled receiver antennas. Since the optimal multiport matching network is of very high complexity as well as very narrow operation bandwidth, development of single-port (SP) matching networks that boost the performance became inevitable. In this paper we develop a gradient-search algorithm to design the matching network for achievable rate maximization of multi user MIMO systems. For arty combination of noise sources, we rigorously derive the exact gradient of the achievable rate with respect to the components of the matching network. We assume either full knowledge of the spatial channel or knowing its statistical properties. In the later case we optimize the matching network to maximize the Jensen's bound. Substantial performance enhancement is shown when our algorithms are used. Significant reduction in the array area is gained in comparison to the often used lambda/2 antenna spacing without taking coupling into account. This can be vital for future wireless systems adopting massive MIMO arrays. Via eigenvalues distribution simulations at different SNR regimes, we show an intuitive link to the communication theory.

Optimization of Piezoelectric Sensor-Actuator for Plate Vibration Control Using Evolutionary Computation: Modeling, Simulation and Experimentation

The development of lightweight, stronger, and more flexible structures has received the utmost interest from many researchers. For this reason, piezoelectric materials, with their inherent electromechanical coupling, have been widely incorporated in the development of such structures to attenuate their vibrations. However, one of the main challenges is to find the optimal control and sensor-actuator placement. This paper presents an active vibration control for flexible structures, whereby a simply supported plate is taken as the benchmark model. A feedback controller with a collocated sensor-actuator configuration is used. Both disturbance and control signal acting on the plate is created by using piezoelectric (PZT) patches. The analytical model is derived based on the Euler-Bernoulli model. The Optimal location of the collocated sensor-actuator, as well as PID controller gains, are determined using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique, then compared with the Genetic algorithm (GA) and enumerative method (EM). Optimization in this paper is based on minimizing frequency average energy. The optimal performance value of piezoelectric patch sensor-actuator position and PID controller gains are verified experimentally. It was found that PID controller gains and collocated sensor-actuator location optimizations using ACO, GA and enumerative methods give similar results, which implies the effectiveness of ACO as an optimization technique. More than 20 % of attenuation achieved using the available hardware setup.

Control of noise generated from centrifugal refrigeration compressor

Noise level is an important parameter of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, and compressors are usually dominant acoustic sources in these systems including several components, such as heat exchangers, fans, and valves. Centrifugal compressors are usually used in large capacity refrigeration systems [1?3], thus detailed investigation on noise features of centrifugal compressors is beneficial to reduce overall noise level of the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Several numerical [4?10] and experimental [11?14] studies on the centrifugal compressor noise have shown that the Vibration and noise characteristic of two-stage centrifugal compressors used in refrigeration system is studied experimentally. Experimental results of vibration acceleration, sound pressure spectra and their coherence indicate that the compressor noise is dominated by tonal components at discrete frequencies and is mainly radiated from the vibration of the outlet pipe of the compressor. Therefore, a multi-layer micro-perforated panel absorber fixed at the outlet pipe is employed to attenuate the compressor noise, where acoustic transmission analysis and generic algorithm are combined to design optimal geometry parameters of the absorber. Experimental results confirm that the designed micro-perforated panel absorber can effectively reduce the noise of the centrifugal refrigeration compressor. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. In recent years, WiFi offloading provides a potential solution for improving ad hoc network performance along with cellular network. This paper reviews the different offloading techniques that are implemented in various applications. In disaster management applications, the cellular network is not optimal for existing case studies because the lack of infrastructure. MANET Wi-Fi offloading (MWO) is one of the potential solutions for offloading cellular traffic. This word combines the cellular network with mobile ad hoc network by implementing the technique of Wi-Fi offloading. Based on the applications requirements the offloading techniques implemented into mobile-to-mobile (M-M), mobile-to-cellular (M-C), mobile-to-AP (M-AP). It serves more reliability, congestion eliminated, increasing data rate, and high network performance. The authors also identified the issue while implementing the offloading techniques in network. Finally, this paper achieved the better performance results compared to existing approaches implemented in disaster management.

High-pressure phases of BaCN2 explored using a genetic algorithm

Nitrogen-containing polymers have attracted considerable research attention for their application to high energy density materials, where the energy is internally stored in their triple bonds. In this regard, it is intriguing to examine whether such polymerized phases appear in the high-pressure phase of metal carbodiimide MCN2, which have been synthesized recently. However, very few studies have investigated crystal structures up to 10/15 GPa in experiments/simulations. In this work, we adopted a structure search based on genetic algorithm coupled with ab initio electronic structure calculations to investigate possible crystal structures that may appear in the high-pressure phase of BaCN2. Furthermore, we reproduced the previously reported crystal structures in the lower pressure range similar to 6 GPa. With confirmed reliability of its predictive capability, we used the genetic search and predicted a polymerized phase with Ima2 appearing at higher pressure above 42 GPa. The polymerized phase has a linear network structure of CN3 planar triangular units. It has been found that the anion site units CN2, which are close to each other under high pressure, form direct covalent bonds and stabilize the phase.

In recent years, graph neural networks (GNNs) have gained increasing attention, as they possess the excellent capability of processing graph-related problems. In practice, hyperparameter optimisation (HPO) is critical for GNNs to achieve satisfactory results, but this process is costly because the evaluations of different hyperparameter settings require excessively training many GNNs. Many approaches have been proposed for HPO, which aims to identify promising hyperparameters efficiently. In particular, the genetic algorithm (GA) for HPO has been explored, which treats GNNs as a black-box model, of which only the outputs can be observed given a set of hyperparameters. However, because GNN models are sophisticated and the evaluations of hyperparameters on GNNs are expensive, GA requires advanced techniques to balance the exploration and exploitation of the search and make the optimisation more effective given limited computational resources. Therefore, we proposed a tree-structured mutation strategy for GA to alleviate this issue. Meanwhile, we reviewed the recent HPO works, which gives room for the idea of tree-structure to develop, and we hope our approach can further improve these HPO methods in the future.

A Genetic-algorithm-based Approach to the Design of DCT Hardware Accelerators

As modern applications demand an unprecedented level of computational resources, traditional computing system design paradigms are no longer adequate to guarantee significant performance enhancement at an affordable cost. Approximate Computing (AxC) has been introduced as a potential candidate to achieve better computational performances by relaxing non-critical functional system specifications. In this article, we propose a systematic and high-abstraction-level approach allowing the automatic generation of near Pareto-optimal approximate configurations for a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) hardware accelerator. We obtain the approximate variants by using approximate operations, having configurable approximation degree, rather than full-precise ones. We use a genetic searching algorithm to find the appropriate tuning of the approximation degree, leading to optimal tradeoffs between accuracy and gains. Finally, to evaluate the actual HW gains, we synthesize non-dominated approximate DCT variants for two different target technologies, namely, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). Experimental results show that the proposed approach allows performing a meaningful exploration of the design space to find the best tradeoffs in a reasonable time. Indeed, compared to the state-of-the-art work on approximate DCT, the proposed approach allows an 18% average energy improvement while providing at the same time image quality improvement.
