Exposure Minimization in Indoor Wireless Networks

This letter presents the impact of indoor wireless network planning on human exposure to radiowaves and suggests network configurations that targets exposure minimization. The aim is to deploy an indoor wireless network with the minimum radiation impact on humans. The indoor environment is modeled in a vector format, and a deterministic ray tracing algorithm is used for field predictions. For the purpose of the investigation, a genetic algorithm (GA) optimization technique is developed. It is shown that exposure due to the transmitting stations and the terminal devices can be minimized when the network is deployed in an optimum way. A robust and effective planning tool is suggested.

Fractal random Cantor superlattices have been proposed in this paper as wavelength selective and broadband filters. Through the use of genetic algorithm optimization, the authors have demonstrated two examples of broadband filters in the mid-IR with a single, broad stop band from 50 THz to 100 THz. These results prove the concept of broadband fractal random superlattices.

Effects of 10% biofuel substitution on ground level ozone formation in Bangkok, Thailand

The Thai Government's search for alternatives to imported petroleum led to the consideration of mandating 10% biofuel blends (biodiesel and gasohol) by 2012. Concerns over the effects of biofuel combustion on ground level ozone formation in relation to their conventional counterparts need addressing. Ozone formation in Bangkok is explored using a trajectory box model. The model is compared against O-3, NO, and NO2 time concentration data from air monitoring stations operated by the Thai Pollution Control Department. Four high ozone days in 2006 were selected for modeling. Both the traditional trajectory approach and a citywide average approach were used. The model performs well with both approaches but slightly better with the citywide average. Highly uncertain and missing data are derived within realistic bounds using a genetic algorithm optimization. It was found that 10% biofuel substitution will lead to as much as a 16 ppb peak O-3 increase on these four days compared to a 48 ppb increase due to the predicted vehicle fleet size increase between 2006 and 2012. The approach also suggests that when detailed meteorological data is not available to run three dimensional airshed models, and if the air is stagnant or predominately remains over an urban area during the day, that a simple low cost trajectory analysis of O-3 formation may be applicable. Since the dawn of the space age many space missions have been carried out in order to explore the solar system. Only one spacecraft has ever had the privilege to travel to the distant planet Uranus, namely Voyager 2. However, Voyager 2 has only been the tip of the iceberg when it comes to uncovering the mysteries of Uranus, its rings and moons. An orbiter mission to Uranus is a logical step in the range of planetary explorers, as it could provide insight in for example the formation process of ice giants and in atmospheric phenomena. optimization of the interplanetary trajectory is a major part of the analysis of a mission to Uranus. Many different techniques can be applied to go from Earth to another planet. Of course a direct flight is possible, where one engine burn is applied at a parking orbit around Earth and another burn is performed to get into orbit around the target planet. It is also possible, however, to use the gravity of other planets to change the trajectory in such a way that it could save fuel with respect to the direct interplanetary transfer. It is also possible to perform an engine burn somewhere along the interplanetary orbit. Such a deep space maneuver (DSM) may also improve the total fuel consumption for the mission. The mission to Uranus and the addition of deep space maneuvers to the trajectory form the backbone of this thesis. Therefore the following thesis objectives can be formulated: I Develop a method to optimize interplanetary trajectories with deep space ma- neuvers and integrate this method in the software package galomusit. II Apply the developed method to optimize the trajectory for a Uranus orbiter mission. Based on the literature study prior to this thesis a number of assumptions are made regarding the mission to Uranus. First of all, in this thesis only high thrust trajectories are used. Secondly, planets can be used to perform either a powered or an unpowered gravity assist, but aerogravity assists are not applied. Finally, the

Design considerations of a direct drive brushless machine with concentrated windings

This paper discusses the performance attributes of the open-slot, modular-wound, external-rotor, topology of electrical machine. Combinations of pole and slot numbers are presented for which the winding factor is maximal and torque ripple is minimal. An optimization of the magnetic circuit design of six promising pole-slot configurations is undertaken using a parametric finite element model (FEM) combined with a genetic algorithm (GA). These designs are benchmarked against a conventional 1.5 slots/pole external-rotor brushless dc machine. These candidate electrical machine versions are characterized by having the same external-rotor diameter, total slot area available for the winding and by equal volumes of permanent magnet (PM). Based on the analysis, the most promising motor structure was selected and a prototype wheel-hub motor has been built for application in a small electrical vehicle. Test data from the prototype is used to validate the findings of the initial analyses and practically demonstrate the attributes of the topology.

A genetic approach for building different alphabets for peptide and protein classification

Background: In this paper, it is proposed an optimization approach for producing reduced alphabets for peptide classification, using a genetic algorithm. The classification task is performed by a multi-classifier system where each classifier (Linear or Radial Basis function Support Vector Machines) is trained using features extracted by different reduced alphabets. Each alphabet is constructed by a genetic algorithm whose objective function is the maximization of the area under the ROC-curve obtained in several classification problems. Results: The new approach has been tested in three peptide classification problems: HIV-protease, recognition of T-cell epitopes and prediction of peptides that bind human leukocyte antigens. The tests demonstrate that the idea of training a pool classifiers by reduced alphabets, created using a genetic algorithm, allows an improvement over other state-of-the-art feature extraction methods. Conclusion: The validity of the novel strategy for creating reduced alphabets is demonstrated by the performance improvement obtained by the proposed approach with respect to other reduced alphabets-based methods in the tested problems.

A domain-based approach to predict protein-protein interactions

Background: Knowing which proteins exist in a certain organism or cell type and how these proteins interact with each other are necessary for the understanding of biological processes at the whole cell level. The determination of the protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks has been the subject of extensive research. Despite the development of reasonably successful methods, serious technical difficulties still exist. In this paper we present DomainGA, a quantitative computational approach that uses the information about the domain-domain interactions to predict the interactions between proteins. Results: DomainGA is a multi-parameter optimization method in which the available PPI information is used to derive a quantitative scoring scheme for the domain-domain pairs. Obtained domain interaction scores are then used to predict whether a pair of proteins interacts. Using the yeast PPI data and a series of tests, we show the robustness and insensitivity of the DomainGA method to the selection of the parameter sets, score ranges, and detection rules. Our DomainGA method achieves very high explanation ratios for the positive and negative PPIs in yeast. Based on our cross-verification tests on human PPIs, comparison of the optimized scores with the structurally observed domain interactions obtained from the iPFAM database, and sensitivity and specificity analysis;we conclude that our DomainGA method shows great promise to be applicable across multiple organisms. Conclusion: We envision the DomainGA as a first step of a multiple tier approach to constructing organism specific PPIs. As it is based on fundamental structural information, the DomainGA approach can be used to create potential PPIs and the accuracy of the constructed interaction template can be further improved using complementary methods. In this paper, the application of modified genetic algorithms (MGA) in the parameterization of the 2-link Pneumatic Artificial Muscle (PAM) manipulator is investigated. The new algorithm is proposed from the conventional genetic algorithm (SGA) with some additional strategies, and consequently yields a faster convergence and a more accurate search. Firstly, this near-optimum search technique, MGA-based ID method, is used to identify the parameters of the prototype 2-link Pneumatic Artificial Muscle (PAM) manipulator described by an ARX model in the presence of white noise and this result will be validated by comparing with the simple genetic algorithm (SGA) and LMS (Least mean-squares) method as well. The parameters of the hysteresis as well as other nonlinear disturbances existing intuitively in the 2-link Pneumatic Artificial Muscle (PAM) manipulator are estimated in a single identification experiment. Experiment results are included to demonstrate the excellent performance of the MGA algorithm in the system modeling and identification of the PAM manipulator. These results can be applied to model and identify other nonlinear systems as well.

A new force field was developed using genetic algorithms (GAs) to optimize molecular mechanics (MM) parameters. The GA-MM approach was applied to the study of technetium (Tc) complexes with coordination numbers of 5 or 6 and formal oxidation states of + 3 to + 6 on the metal. Both soft and hard donor ligands, coordinated through dative, single, and multiple bonds to Tc, were studied. The new GA-MM force field was tested for the prediction of metric parameters (bond lengths, bond angles and dihedral angles) and overall geometry in reference to X-ray crystallographic data. Despite the chemical diversity found in technetium coordination chemistry, good modeling was achieved in a fraction of the time of higher-level, quantum-based methods, with considerably less computational resources. The GA-MM approach is general enough to be applicable to other d-block metals. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
