Predicting cation ordering in MgAl₂O₄ using genetic algorithms and density functional theory

genetic algorithms (GAs) together with classical pair potentials and density functional theory (DFT) are used to investigate cation order in MgAl2O4 (Spinel). To efficiently locate the global minimum/minima on the system potential energy surface, corresponding to the ordered and fully equilibrated low-temperature phase, local structural optimizations are essential. Such energy minimizations are expensive at the DFT level, but a comparison of the distribution of the energy minima from DFT and popular classical pair potentials allows one to rapidly tune the GA parameters. We show that GAs are able to find, not only the global minimum on the potential energy, but also other low-energy cation configurations representing possible frozen-in disordered or metastable phases after quenching. The nature of these low-energy configurations can help to interpret the extent of kinetic trapping which hampers the comparison between different experimental studies.

Worst-case dI/dt voltage noise is typically characterized post-silicon using direct voltage measurements through either on package measurement points or on-chip dedicated circuitry. These approaches consume expensive pad resources or suffer from design-time and run-time overheads. This work proposes an alternative non-intrusive, zero-overhead approach for post-silicon dI/dt voltage noise generation based on sensing CPU electromagnetic emanations using an antenna and a spectrum analyzer. The approach is based on the observation that high amplitude electromagnetic emanations are correlated with high voltage noise. We leverage this observation to automatically generate voltage noise (dI/dt) stress tests with a genetic-algorithm that is driven by electromagnetic signal amplitude and to obtain the first-order resonance-frequency of the Power-Delivery LC-tank network. The generality of the approach is established by successfully applying it to three different CPUs: two ARM multi core mobile CPU clusters hosted on a *** configuration and an x86-64 AMD desktop CPU. The efficacy of the proposed methodology is validated through VMIN and direct voltage noise measurements.

A fuzzy-genetic control system in the ABS for the control of semi-active vehicle suspensions

The aim of this paper is to create a new ABS (Antilock Braking System) control system of a Soft Computing type, on the grounds of the excellent results obtained in the field of automobiles in former studies [1]. Such a system should make it possible to enhance performance in all conditions. The novelty lies in the fact that the system improves not only the physical nature of the hydraulic and electronic components used [2,3], but also the functioning of these, by means of a new control strategy based on a fuzzy-type algorithm optimised with genetic algorithms. In this way the performance of the system may be improved or alternatively the control logic may be simplified for the same degree of performance, offering satisfactory results in all possible conditions. The target performance aimed at may be summarised in two points: reduction in braking distance and improved directional control of the vehicle. The study was optimised on a monocorner model, subsequently to be extended to a complete vehicle model. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Improving hybrid ad hoc networks: The election of gateways

The selection of an appropriate and stable route that enables suitable load balancing of Internet gateways is an important issue in hybrid mobile ad hoc networks. The variables employed to perform routing must ensure that no harm is caused that might degrade other network performance metrics such as delay and packet loss. Moreover, the effect of such routing must remain affordable, such as low losses or extra signaling messages. This paper proposes a new method, Steady Load Balancing Gateway Election, based on a fuzzy logic system to achieve this objective. The fuzzy system infers a new routing metric named cost that considers several networks performance variables to select the best gateway. To solve the problem of defining the fuzzy sets, they are optimized by a genetic algorithm whose fitness function also employs fuzzy logic and is designed with four network performance metrics. The promising results confirm that ad hoc networks are characterized by great uncertainty, so that the use of Computational Intelligence methods such as fuzzy logic or genetic algorithms is highly recommended. We present a new computational scheme to design supercontinuum spectra "a la carte" by means of genetic algorithms. Due to the potentially large amount of computations required by this strategy, the deployment of these heuristic algorithms is performed using distributed computing in the form of a Grid platform. The optimization procedure is automated within the Grid platform and permits escalation to large computational Grids. Some examples of designed supercontinua are given and potential applications for the design of future photonic devices are briefly described.

An effective multi-objective approach to prioritisation of sewer pipe inspection

The first step in the decision making process for proactive sewer rehabilitation is to assess the condition of conduits. In a risk-based decision context the set of sewers to be inspected first should be identified based on the trade-off between the risk of failures and the cost of inspections. In this paper the most effective inspection works are obtained by solving a multi-objective optimization problem where the total cost of the survey programme and the expected cost of emergency repairs subsequent to blockages and collapses are considered simultaneously. A multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is used to identify a set of Pareto-optimal inspection programmes. Regardless of the proven effectiveness of the genetic-algorithm approach, the scrutiny of MOGA-based inspection strategies shows that they can differ significantly from each other, even when having comparable costs. A post-processing of MOGA solutions is proposed herein, which allows priority to be assigned to each survey intervention. Results are of practical relevance for decision makers, as they represent the most effective sequence of inspection works to be carried out based on the available funds. The proposed approach is demonstrated on a real large sewer system in the UK.

Topology optimization of piezoelectric sensors/actuators for torsional vibration control of composite plates

Torsional vibration control can be crucial for applications of smart materials and structures. In this paper, the problem of topology optimization of collocated piezoelectric sensor/actuator (S/A) pairs for torsional vibration control of a laminated composite plate is directly addressed. Both isotropic and anisotropic PZT S/A pairs are considered and it is highlighted that the torsional vibration can be more effectively damped out by employing the topological optimal design of the S/A pairs than by using the conventional designs. To implement this topology optimization, a genetic algorithm (GA) based on a bit-array representation method is presented and a finite element (FE) simulation model based on the first-order shear theory and an output feedback control law is adopted. Numerical experiments are used to verify the present algorithm and show that the present optimal topology design can achieve significantly better active damping effect than the one using a continuously distributed PZT S/A pair, which was often adopted by many other researchers. Together with the progress in laser cutting and micromachining techniques, topology optimization of piezoelectric sensors and/or actuators would be promising in active vibration control of smart structures.

Improved distribution system planning using computational evolution

This paper presents a new problem solving environment that can utilize different forms of resources to approach better solutions in the distribution planning domain. To implement this concept, a design optimization framework, named Design By Expectation (DBE), is developed. DBE exploits the adaptation of genetic algorithms (GA's) in searching the optimal solution, and releases the strict requirements for objective functions and constraints in conventional optimization techniques. One example, street lighting design, is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.

The authors present a scalable MIMD computer system which was designed to be used as a neurocomputer. It is capable of emulating different types of neurons, including complex biologically motivated models based on activity pulses, variable pulse transmission times, and multiple threshold learning rules. It is constructed as an array consisting of nodal computer chips, each containing an on-chip communication processor to realize a full global communication. Hence, not only neural networks featuring arbitrary topologies can be built, but also a wide range of nonneural processing applications can be implemented. As an example, the authors show how to use the system in solving optimization problems using genetic algorithms, and how to program it for real-time image processing using a combination of neural nets, genetic algorithms, and classical image processing techniques.
