A new method for laser spot center location by using the gradient-based and the least square algorithms is introduced in this paper. Compared with the traditional gravity-based algorithm, the results obtained by the proposed method are of higher accuracy. In the experiments, the dimension of the image detected by the CCD is 1024x768. The relative errors of the results were calculated in order to validate the method proposed in this paper. Comparisons of the results were made between the proposed method and the gravity-based algorithm. Results show that the proposed method is of higher accuracy for the center location and the accuracy can be improved by increasing the number of the selected points in the least square algorithm.

A two-stage face recognition method is proposed in this paper. In the first stage, we present a hybrid method of GA and gradient-based algorithm for training NMF. The set of candidates is narrowed down with the Euclidean distance in NMF subspace serving as the global similarity. In the second stage, face image is segmented into facial bands, and synergetic approach is employed for further recognition. The similarity between a given region of the query image and a stored sample is obtained as the order parameter which serves as an element of the order vector. A modified definition of the potential function is given, and the dynamic model of recognition is derived from it. The effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally confirmed.

Real-time optical flow detection at 1000 fps was realized by implementing an improved optical flow detection algorithm as hardware logic on a high-speed vision platform. The improved gradient-based algorithm, which is based on the Lucas-Kanade algorithm, can select a pseudo variable frame rate adaptively according to the amplitude of optical flow to estimate the accurate optical flow for objects moving at high speeds and low speeds in the same scene. The high-speed vision platform on which the optical flow detection algorithm is implemented can be used to calculate optical flow at 1000 fps for images of 1024x1024 pixels;by considering real scenarios such as rapid human motion, the performance of our developed optical flow detection algorithm and system was verified.

The closed-loop reservoir management technique enables a dynamic and real-time optimal production schedule under the existing reservoir conditions to be achieved by adjusting the injection and production strategies. This is one of the most effective ways to exploit limited oil reserves more economically and efficiently. There are two steps in closed-loop reservoir management: automatic history matching and reservoir production optimization. Both of the steps are large-scale complicated optimization problems. This paper gives a general review of the two basic techniques in closed-loop reservoir management;summarizes the applications of gradient-based algorithms, gradient-free algorithms, and artificial intelligence algorithms;analyzes the characteristics and application conditions of these optimization methods;and finally discusses the emphases and directions of future research on both automatic history matching and reservoir production optimization. © 2015, The Author(s).

Due to excessive need for faster propagations of signals and necessity to reduce number of measurements and rapidly increase efficiency, new sensing theories have been proposed. Conventional sampling approaches that follow Shannon-Nyquist theorem require the sampling rate to be at least twice the maximum frequency of the signal. This has triggered scientists to examine the possibilities of creating a new path for recovering signals using much less samples and therefore speeding up the process and satisfying the need for faster realization. As a result the compressive sensing approach has emerged. This breakthrough makes signal processing and reconstruction much easier, not to mention that is has a vast variety of applications. In this paper some of the commonly used algorithms for sparse signal recovery are compared. The reconstruction accuracy, mean squared error and the execution time are compared.

In this paper, we consider a radio orbital angular momentum (OAM) communication system with uniform circular antenna arrays (UCAs) at both the transmitter and the receiver, which can be seen as a line-of-sight (LOS) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system with discrete Fourier transform matrix as the precoding matrix. While the UCA-based OAM multiplexing can enhance the transmission capacity of LOS links, it is quite sensitive to antenna misalignment and multipath fading, which cause degradation of the capacity performance. In order to alleviate the capacity degradation, we propose a novel closed-loop OAM-MIMO system with adaptive phase-shift control and present a gradient-descent-based algorithm for optimizing the amount of the phase-shift. The gradients are computed at the receiver side and then fed back to the transmitter side. The amount of the feedback information is much less than that of the channel state information represented by the channel matrix. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs very well even when the misalignment varies rapidly over time.

Optimal cross-layer resource allocation in fog computing: A market-based framework

The potential upsides of fog computing are undeniable, including better near-real-time response, reduced transmission costs and analysis for IoT, which will further have a significant impact on operation of factories, enterprises, organizations and even the quality of our life. However, due to the resource-constrained nature, heterogeneity and distributed nodes, how to manage the extraordinarily complex fog computing resources is necessary to improve the QoE of users. This paper investigates the rational resource allocation for fog computing from the cross-layer point of perspective, and formulates the resource allocation scenario as Cloud- Fog-User market which is composed of cloud center devices, fog nodes, and user devices. Firstly, the resource market is divided into Cloud-Fog market containing cloud layer and fog layer, and Fog-User market containing fog layer and user layer based on different scenarios separately. The paper proposes a market-based framework for fog computing networks, which enables the cloud layer and the fog layer to allocate their resources in the form of pricing, payment and supply-demand relationship, while analyzes the relationship among resource allocation participants in the market. Then the paper investigates the utility optimization models from the viewpoints of both the participants of respective markets, so as to optimize optimal payment and optimal resource allocation via convex optimization techniques, and proposes a gradient-based iterative algorithm to optimize the utilities, respectively. Finally, experimental results have displayed the performance of convex analysis results and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A Comparative Study of Multi-Stage Approaches for Wind Farm Layout Optimization

The wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) problem is a complex and nonconvex optimization problem. Even though many different heuristic algorithms and mathematical programming methods have been tested and discussed, there is no consensus about which algorithm is the most suitable approach for solving WFLO problems. Every algorithm presents its own advantages and disadvantages in solving different optimization problems;thus, multi-stage approaches may combine the advantages of multiple algorithms and offer superior performance. One multi-stage approach used for solving WFLO problems is to apply an algorithm in the first stage to produce an optimized layout which serves as the initial condition for a second-stage algorithm to perform further refinement. This paper presents a comparison between two types of multi-stage methods: the Heuristic-gradient-based (H-G) model which consists of a heuristic algorithm in stage 1 and a gradient-based algorithm in stage 2 and the Discrete-Continuous (D-C) model which consists of a heuristic algorithm in the discrete scheme in stage 1 and an algorithm in the continuous scheme in stage 2. Annual energy production (AEP) is used as the objective function while the computational time associated with each approach is documented. Three scenarios are investigated in this paper with different complexity in the wind conditions. It was observed that the D-C models provide the optimal solutions with an average of 0.67% higher AEP and an average of 6.2% lower computational time in comparison with the H-G models. The results from this study provide a basis for selecting a proper optimization algorithm for solving WFLO problems which can lead to a significant increase in the overall annual energy production and a large reduction in computational time.

A sequential finite element model updating routine to identify creep parameters for filament wound composite cylinders in aggressive environments

In this paper, a Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU) procedure is developed to find the best creep parameters for filament-wound cylinders under radial compression in harsh environmental conditions. Three winding angles are considered, each under three different hygrothermal conditions. The two-stage creep model captures i) primary creep through a time-hardening approach whilst ii) secondary creep is captured by Norton's law. Given the high number of parameters in this two-stage creep model and the complexity of determining them experimentally, the FEMU routine utilises an optimisation scheme that sequentially couples a Genetic algorithm (GA) with a gradient-based (GB) Levenberq-Marquardt algorithm (LMA) to find all required creep input parameters to feed the model that best simulates exper-imental results. This framework finds the global optimum through an initial screening of the optimum area within the design space with GA, clearing the path to allow the GB algorithm to find the global opti-mum, substantially reducing the chance or even avoiding falling in local minima. The global search is dri-ven by experimental data of cylinders loaded in radial compression under aggressive environments. The numerical results show excellent agreement with experimental results with reasonably low computa-tional efforts.(c) 2022 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd.
