Traditional textual programming languages are poorly readable and difficult to learn, creating significant hurdles for practitioners of industry (such as electromechanical engineers). However, graphical programming language (GPL), using graphical symbols to construct programs, is becoming increasingly popular as it is intuitive and easy to learn. They have been implemented in many specific areas (such as intelligent buildings, robots, education, etc.), achieving better practical effect. This paper illustrates researches of graphic programming languages in recent years introducing relevant basic concepts, the classification, key technical issues and its applications in intelligent building field. It analyzes the new challenges of current research and outlook to the future development trends of GPL.

This work presents the current state of research into the development of recommendations for the application of graphic full variability programming languages in safety-related system developments. The basis for the development presents an analysis of existing safety-related standards to understand the way of implementation in text-based programming environments and fulfill applicable requirements. Based on the fundamental standard analysis, a list of different methods and procedures has been created. Their implementation in a graphical full variability programming language meets all requirements following the standards. Therefore, the core of this work essentially provides the development and validation of the recommendations for graphical programming languages to meet applicable standards and guidelines. The result of this development will be architecture and recommendations for programming guidelines. Finally, the received recommendations for a particular graphical programming language shall be used to provide practical proof of feasibility. Recommendations are applied to the concrete development environment LabVIEW with the programming language G. Implementation and validation in an evaluation project and verification through unique methods from the standards have been planned.

Manufacturing and Process Industries use a complex and wide range of measurement devices to measure real-time process variables like temperature, pressure, and flow rate. Control systems use the measured process variables to manage various industrial operations like opening/closing a valve, raising alarms, etc. Inaccurate recording of process variables can lead to industrial failures or affect the production quality of manufactured goods. Verification of measurement devices thus becomes imperative to ensure maximum performance of industrial processes. Traditionally, subject matter experts and testers define the pseudo logic of a test case, which software developers further convert to executable test scripts to be run on devices. However, this manual generation of test scripts is cumbersome, time-consuming, lacks standardization, and depends mainly on the software developers' competency. Automatic generation of test scripts thus becomes necessary for quick, reliable, and efficient testing of measurement devices. This paper presents a device verification framework called DeviceVeri, based on graphical programming to generate executable test scripts for verifying measurement devices. General and device-specific graphical blocks represent specific functionalities of device verification logic. graphical blocks abstract technical details from users, making the test script generation process simple, less time-intensive, and user-friendly. The framework will be used by process engineers, testers and subject matter experts to generate test scripts and use them to verify measurement devices. In addition, the proposed framework minimizes the dependency on software developers to write test scripts manually, thus enhancing the testing process of measurement devices.

Today's sensors and analysis systems produce huge amounts of data and one of the main challenges is how to enable users to find relevant data in time. Software systems supporting queries must provide suitable filter mechanisms. Through this filtering, the full dataset can be reduced to a manageable amount of relevant data. Respective filter criteria can be chained together in the form of Boolean expressions using disjunctions and conjunctions, and the resulting hierarchical structures can be further simplified by parentheses. The practical use case that we present in this publication consists of a web application to access potentially large data sets using a defined set of metadata based catalogue entries. This application currently supports the specification of filter criteria, which can be concatenated by the user through a single global conjunction in a flat hierarchy. The underlying query language supports more complex queries using any combination of conjunctions, disjunctions and brackets. There is a user requirement to extend the expressiveness of the client search queries so that the full scope of the query language can be leveraged meaningfully. One problem is how such complex search queries can be graphically structured and visualized in a clear and comprehensive way. There exist different approaches for the graphical visualization of program code and query languages. Some of these approaches also support the graphical editing of these representations by the user. Examples for such frameworks or tools are Blockly, Scratch or Node-RED. In this publication, an analysis of the applicability of such frameworks in the existing web application is presented. For this purpose, operational constraints and exclusion criteria that must be fulfilled for the use in our application are identified. This results in a selection of a framework for a future implementation.

graphical programming languages allow for well structured software and support comprehensibility and maintainability of the code. As for industrial applications, Sequential Function Chart(SFC) is a popular graphical language and was introduced by the IEC-61131-3 standard. Although providing powerful structuring elements that programmers can use to write better software, those elements are largely dropped when translating the software to a representation required for the application of formal methods. Even in widely used development-tools like CODESYS, SFCs are internally translated to the textual language Structured Text, coming from the same standard. This approach preserves the semantics needed for simulation, but can introduce significant overhead that impedes the application of formal methods, e.g. Concolic Testing, which is the focus of this work. To this end, we propose a novel Concolic Testing approach that utilises the structure of SFC in order to overcome the obstacles that keep traditional techniques from achieving high test-coverage in a reasonable amount of time. We compare our results to two approaches that work on a textual representation of the program. © 2018

Developing student's Computational Thinking (CT), which is an essential problem-solving skill for people living in the 21st century, becomes an outstanding purpose of promoting engineering education in K-12 classrooms. In this paper, CT is represented through the graphical programming language Scratch according to the three-dimensional CT framework proposed by Brennan and Resnick [1]. This project aims to explore the classroom effect of using graphical programming tool in learning English dialogue and investigate how to improve the integration of CT into English education with the elements of programming. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative method was adopted to collect data through class observations, programming projects, and semi-structured interviews. Nine primary students (n = 9) were the targeted participants, who attended extra-curricular lessons for computer programming using Scratch at their school in Hong Kong. The preliminary results show that the introduction of CT into English dialogue learning through graphical programming language can motivate primary school students to study English dialogue. To better connect CT with English education via graphical programming tools, students and the teacher in the group under study suggested making computers interact with people autonomically, designing games in graphical programming environments to encourage English learning, keeping the programming language learning skill and their English language skill, and adopting graphical programming language as a tool to finish the summative English language assignments.

In order to explore more convenient ways to design the measure and control platform, and enhance the intelligent level of instrument, this paper used graphical programming language LabVIEW to realize the kind virtual panel, and put the intelligent part of the equipment to process by computer. The paper designed the virtual test platform for communication with measurement and control. After testing, the platform has high speed of data acquisition, is able to effectively deal with parameters of the object for testing and output the result, as well as can well communicate with other devices. The implementation of vibration analysis techniques based on virtual instrumentation has spread increasingly in the academic and industrial branch, since the use of any software for this type of analysis brings good results at low cost. Among the existing software for programming and creation of virtual instruments, the Lab VIEW was chosen for this project. This software has good interface with the method of graphical programming. In this project, it was developed a system of rotating machine condition monitoring. This monitoring system is applied in a test stand, simulating large scale applications, such as in hydroelectric, nuclear and oil exploration companies. It was initially used a test stand, where an instrumentation for data acquisition was inserted, composed of accelerometers and inductive proximity sensors. The data collection system was structured on the basis of an NI 6008 A/D converter of National Instruments. An electronic circuit command was developed through the A/D converter for a remote firing of the test stand. The equipment monitoring is performed through the data collected from the sensors. The vibration signals collected by accelerometers are processed in the time domain and frequency. Also, proximity probes were used for the axis orbit evaluation and an inductive sensor for the rotation and trigger measurement.
