With the advancement in power electronics technology and grid standards, traditional converters are being supplemented with the new IEEE 1547-2018 standard based grid support functions (GSFs) to support power system voltage and frequency. Inverter dynamics in power systems vary with different modes of operation, thus new modeling methods for proper system planning, operation, and dispatch are required. This work presents a data-driven approach for partitioned dynamic modeling of inverters to speed up simulation time and reduce computational complexity while ensuring acceptable accuracy. The proposed method was tested for a smart inverter with voltage support (Volt-VAr function) on a two-bus system considering dynamic residential loads, and the results showed a four-time speedup in simulation time compared to the use of the detailed model with acceptable levels of accuracy.

The high penetration of utility interconnected photovoltaic systems is is leading to a need for inverters to include grid support functions, to minimize the negative impact these variable distributed energy resources may have on system voltage and frequency. Unfortunately, grid support functions may interfere with island detection algorithms;specifically, it may be difficult for an island detection scheme to detect voltage and frequency deviations if that converter and other converters on the same bus actively modulate their real and reactive power outputs in response to voltage and frequency deviations while also tolerating greater deviation. This report provides analysis and simulation evidence to investigate the effect of advanced inverter functions on the performance of island detection schemes. A mitigation scheme is also presented and shown to be effective in simulation.

A significant amount of converter-based generation, such as wind and photovoltaic. is being integrated into the bulk electric pow er grid to fulfill the future electric demand. Such converter-based distributed energy resources (DERR) will be providing multiple grid support functions (GSFs) to support voltage and frequency control of the power system. In this paper, we present the de% etopnieni of a MATLAB/SIInulinkbased simulation model to study power system dynantics when DERs are equipped is itit GSFs. I be simulation model of an inverter Iv ith GSFs is salidated through comparisons against the characteristic curses for each function of the IEEE 1547-2018 standard. The normalized root-mean -square-error (NRMSE) was calculated to be less than 2%. The developed model is then used in a sample power systems dy namics study under various operating conditions. Results show the expected response of inverters is ith GSFs properly supporting the grid Voltage and frequency and maintaining the value is an acceptable range.

grid technologies connected by power electronic converter (PEC) interfaces continually implement grid support functions mandated by grid codes and standards. The transition to converter-based generation demands precise PEC models to assess system dynamics, which have been previously overlooked in conventional power systems. This study proposes a hybrid method for analyzing grid-connected three-phase PEC dynamics with the IEEE standard 1547-2018 Volt-VAr mode that combines physics and data-driven techniques. The physics model reflects the PEC's internal behavior, whereas the data-driven modeling technique evaluates the grid-supporting capabilities of the smart PEC. The system identification approach is used to generate dynamic PEC models based on changing grid voltage and measured current injected into the grid by the PEC. In the Volt-VAr support mode, a detailed topological model including switches is utilized to compare the goodness-of-fit of the extracted hybrid dynamic model. The results demonstrate that the hybrid PEC model in the Volt-VAr mode accurately matches the dynamics with the topological model.

As more grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters become compliant with evolving interconnections requirements, there is increased interest from utilities in understanding how to best deploy advanced grid-support functions (GSF) in the field. One efficient and cost-effective method to examine such deployment options is to leverage power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing methods, which combine the fidelity of hardware tests with the flexibility of computer simulation. This paper summarizes a study wherein two Hawaiian Electric feeder models were converted to real-time models using an OPAL-RT real-time digital testing platform, and integrated with models of GSF capable PV inverters based on characterization test data. The integrated model was subsequently used in PHIL testing to evaluate the effects of different fixed power factor and volt-watt control settings on voltage regulation of the selected feeders using physical inverters. Selected results are presented in this paper, and complete results of this study were provided as inputs for field deployment and technical interconnection requirements for grid-connected PV inverters on the Hawaiian Islands.

With the latest edition of IEEE Standard 1547(TM) published in 2018 and amended in 2020, and IEEE 1547.1 tested/UL 1741 SB certified inverters entering the market, there are strong interests to have accurate distributed energy resource (DER) models to support the proper assessment of DER impacts on power systems. This paper introduces an open-source distributed energy resource (OpenDER) model, which aims to represent the functional definitions and requirements of IEEE Standard 1547-2018. It can be used to analyze steady-state and dynamic (fundamental frequency phasor component) behaviors of DERs for planning and interconnection studies. A publicly available model specification document is also released, which complements the OpenDER model software to help the industry reach consensus interpretations and utilize this open-source model and/or develop their own model rapidly and accurately. Example model specifications and applications of the OpenDER model are provided in this paper to demonstrate the need for an accurate DER model for distribution analysis.

In inverter-dominated power systems, the grid cannot be modeled as a stiff voltage source with constant frequency. Most existing grid-connected inverters operate as grid-following sources in which they measure the frequency at the inverter terminals using a phase-locked loop (PLL). Recent studies have indicated that the PLL controls can result in instability in weak systems. In this work, a simplified theoretical model is derived to understand the instability that can occur in an inverter-dominated power system. The theoretical model demonstrates the degradation in dynamic response attributable to the PLL controls at higher inverter penetration, particularly for constant-power loads. The model can predict the critical penetration level at which instability is initiated. The model predictions are consistent with the results of small-signal eigenvalue trajectories plotted for the full system model. Time domain simulation waveforms are also presented that build confidence in the model predictions. The results demonstrate that the theoretical model can be helpful when designing the PLL controls for grid-connected inverters in inverter-dominated systems.

Due to the increased penetration in Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), especially in Photovoltaic (PV) systems, voltage and frequency regulation has become a topic of interest. Utilities have been requesting DER voltage and frequency support for almost two decades. Their request was addressed by standards such as the IEEE Std 1547-2018. With the continuous improvements in inverters' ability to control their output voltage, power, and frequency, a group of advanced techniques to support the grid is now required by the interconnection standard. These techniques are known as grid support functions (GSF), and they allow the inverter to provide voltage and frequency support to the grid as well as the ability to ride-through abnormal events. Understanding how a GSF behaves is challenging, especially when multiple GSFs are combined to help the utility to control the system voltage and frequency. This paper evaluates the effects of GSF's on the IEEE Std 1547.1-2020 Unintentional Islanding Test 5B by comparing simulation results from a developed PV inverter model and experimental results from a Power Hardware-in-theLoop platform.

Commercial distributed photovoltaic (DPV) inverters need to comply with standards and guidelines defined by local utilities and distribution system operators. However, due to lack of clear guideline in standards about the performance of inverters under certain types of grid disturbances, these inverters can exhibit a diverse range of responses. As power systems begin to accommodate larger quantities of generation from DPVs their response becomes critical to system security. Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHiL) testing is used in this paper to analyze the behavior of commercial DPV inverters under various grid disturbances. One of the key advantages of this approach is the integration of detailed distribution network models in the testing. The voltage on the point of common coupling (PCC) of the DPV inverter can thus be similar to practical conditions. Experimental tests on multiple commercial DPV inverters are performed to validate the proposed approach and its importance in identifying the interaction of inverters with grid disturbances. The results also demonstrate the need for extensive network-oriented testing of DPV inverters beyond standards compliance.

The penetration of inverter-based resources (IBR) has reached critically high levels in many power systems. There are growing concerns due to decreased mechanical inertia as well as voltage stability issues in such power systems. Commercial IBRs operate as grid-following (GFL) sources;they track and follow the voltage and frequency at the terminals of the inverter. These inverter controls rely on existing synchronous machines to provide a stiff voltage and frequency and do not actively contribute to supporting the system stability. In contrast, a grid-forming (GFM) inverter actively controls voltage and frequency at its inverter terminals, which can be help support the system during disturbances. In this work, the voltage stability of the IEEE 39 bus system with increasing inverter penetration is investigated for small disturbances. Simulations are performed with increasing penetration of both GFL and GFM inverters and the resulting waveforms are presented. Instabilities are observed with GFL control at higher penetration levels whereas GFM controls exhibited stable operation for small disturbances. GFL controls demonstrated increased sensitivity to nonlinear load models while GFM controls did not exhibit any such issues.
