H2O is a lightweight distributed component framework for the dynamic aggregation of software components, services and computational resources into grid computing Systems. H2O provides a powerful separation of roles clearly distinguishing providers of software components from provides of computational services, this model allows developers to easily design layered applications and to deploy them on top of dynamically aggregated computational nodes. The ease of use does not exact a weak security system, in fact, by combining the native Java sandbox model and the use of JAAS, H2O provides a robust security layer. Although H2O supports an extended version of Java RMI (RMIX) as its native inter-component communication language, the software components deployed inside an H2O virtual machine are exposed only as Java Objects. In this paper we present the H2O Web Services Gateway, a set of H2O software component capable of dynamically capturing the deployment of new software components into an H2O virtual machine and automatically generating and publishing the WSDL description of these components. This feature, combined with the use of the Web Services Invocation Framework, enables the automated export of software components deployed into an H2O virtual machine as Web Services and facilitates the integration of lightweight grid application into Service Oriented Architectures.

Advancements in medium and high resolution Earth observation for land-surface imaging: Evolutions, future trends and contributions to sustainable development

Technologies for imaging the surface of the Earth, through satellite based Earth observations (EO) have enormously evolved over the past 50 years. The trends are likely to evolve further as the user community increases and their awareness and demands for EO data also increases. In this review paper, a development trend on EO imaging systems is presented with the objective of deriving the evolving patterns for the EO user community. From the review and analysis of medium-to-high resolution EO-based land-surface sensor missions, it is observed that there is a predictive pattern in the EO evolution trends such that every 10-15 years, more sophisticated EO imaging systems with application specific capabilities are seen to emerge. Such new systems, as determined in this review, are likely to comprise of agile and small payload-mass EO land surface imaging satellites with the ability for high velocity data transmission and huge volumes of spatial, spectral, temporal and radiometric resolution data. This availability of data will magnify the phenomenon of "Big Data" in Earth observation. Because of the "Big Data" issue, new computing and processing platforms such as telegeoprocessing and grid computing are expected to be incorporated in EO data processing and distribution networks. In general, it is observed that the demand for EO is growing exponentially as the application and cost-benefits are being recognized in support of resource management. (C) 2015 COSPAR. Failure resilient heterogeneous parallel computing across multidomain clusters

We propose lightweight middleware solutions that facilitate and simplify the execution of failure-resilient Message Passing Interface (MPI) programs across multidomain clusters. The system described in this paper leverages H2O, a distributed metacomputing framework, to route MPI message passing across heterogeneous aggregates located in different administrative or network domains. MPI communication is aided by a specially written H2O pluglet;messages that are destined for remote sites are intercepted and transparently forwarded to their final destinations. We demonstrate that the proposed technique is indeed effective in enabling communication by MPI programs across distinct clusters and across firewalls. Only marginally lowered performance was observed in our tests, and we believe the substantially increased functionality would compensate for this overhead in most situations. In addition to enabling multicluster communications, we note that with the increasing size and distribution of metacomputing environments, fault tolerance aspects become critically important. We argue that the fault tolerance model proposed by FT-MPI fits well in geographically distributed environments, even though its current implementation is confined to a single administrative domain. We describe extensions to overcome these limitations by combining FT-MPI with the H2O framework. Our holistic approach allows users to run fault-tolerant MPI programs on heterogeneous, geographically distributed shared machines, without sacrificing performance and with minimal involvement of resource providers.

From virtualized resources to virtual computing grids: the In-VIGO system

This paper describes the architecture of the first implementation of the In-VIGO grid-computing system. The architecture is designed to support computational tools for engineering and science research In Virtual Information grid Organizations (as opposed to in vivo or in vitro experimental research). A novel aspect of In-VIGO is the extensive use of virtualization technology, emerging standards for grid-computing and other Internet middleware. In the context of In-VIGO, virtualization denotes the ability of resources to support multiplexing, manifolding and polymorphism (i.e. to simultaneously appear as multiple resources with possibly different functionalities). Virtualization technologies are available or emerging for all the resources needed to construct virtual grids which would ideally inherit the above mentioned properties. In particular, these technologies enable the creation of dynamic pools of virtual resources that can be aggregated on-demand for application-specific user-specific grid-computing. This change in paradigm from building grids out of physical resources to constructing virtual grids has many advantages but also requires new thinking on how to architect, manage and optimize the necessary middleware. This paper reviews the motivation for In-VIGO approach, discusses the technologies used, describes an early architecture for In-VIGO that represents a first step towards the end goal of building virtual information grids, and reports on first experiences with the In-VIGO software under development. Today large-scale applications require access to data stored in heterogeneous storage systems located at geographically distributed virtual organizations. In such applications, users are forced to deal with different administrative policies and structures at each site, and various data access mechanisms on each storage system. This implies a lot of human interventions in order to develop dedicated programs and scripts for data transfer between theses systems. This paper presents grid-enAbled Virtual file sYstem (GRAVY) architecture which enables the automation of data transfers between distributed file systems irrespective of their heterogeneity. This feature enables high-level schedulers integrated with GRAVY to control data placements like computational jobs. GRAVY supports multiple data access protocols and provides an easy-to-use interface for novice grid users.

The technological and scientific advances in life sciences increase the demand on computing power and storage capacity. Such new requirements can be met by grid-computing, the collaboration of distributed resources across institutional borders. This article focuses on the integration of DICOM as world-wide standard for medical imaging systems into a Globus grid environment. Globus is one of the most popular grid toolkits available today. A grid version of the DICOM implementation (grid-DICOM) is developed by adaption to the Globus grid security interface (GSI). Furthermore, the development of a grid-DICOM router enables a seamless integration of legacy DICOM devices like image archives (PACS) and other medical imaging systems. A web-based portal allows user-friendly access to these systems and other DICOM operations in the grid. A prototype of this DICOM image transfer service is installed and tested in Medigrid, the German grid network for life sciences. First runtime tests demonstrate the seamless integration, but reveal slightly higher transfer times compared to conventional DICOM transfer due to the additional security layer.

Cloud computing is a major area of research. Nature Inspired Algorithms (NIAs) form the major portion of research going on in the Cloud today. NIAs as the name suggests are the algorithms whose source of inspiration is nature. NIAs can further be classified into algorithms based on Swarm Intelligence (SI), Biological Phenomena (called Bio-inspired BI), Physics and Chemistry systems or based on some other things. SI based algorithms are called intelligent because they are known to learn and improve their performance by observing the output on previous moves made by them. NIAs provide an efficient solution to many real-world optimization problems which are categorized to be NP-Hard Problems. NIAs have a huge list of applications and most of them prove to be more efficient than other algorithms and thus are many a time used in combination to other algorithms in order to improve performance and thus deliver a better QoS. The paper intends to review, classify and briefly describe various NIAs and the principle behind each algorithm so as to inspire further research. The paper also lists the applications of various NIAs. NIAs also find their application in Cluster and grid computing.

Advance reservation is an important method to guarantee the quality of service in grid-like distributed systems. However, reserved jobs will make resource into fragments and decrease utilization. In order to minimize the negative effects of advance reservations, the authors analyzed the generation of resource fragments during reservation and investigated their influence on advance reservation requests in a quantitative way. Based on the quantification, two new scheduling algorithms, Resource Fragment-aware Best Fit (FSB) and Resource Fragment-aware Worst Fit (FSW), were proposed and their performances were investigated via comprehensive simulations. In simulation, mean job size, deadline factor, system load and sever number were chosen as control factors, and the performances of the algorithms were analyzed in terms of job acceptance rate, resource utilization and slowdown. We also compared FSB and FSW with Best Fit, First Fit, Min_LIP and Min_TIP. The simulations show that FSW and FSB can provide higher job acceptance rate, especially under heavy system load.
